APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday March 20, 2002 (MJD 52354) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (day) Eric Neilsen Dan Long Ron Rechenmacher (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science until Ron is available, then binned scan test until conditions (weather and moon) permit true imaging, if ever. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We begin doing spectroscopy, finishing a plate early in the night. We then mounted the imager and did some engineering runs using binned scans with Ron R. on the phone. In this time, we battled some ptvme problems. Then we took an imager cross scan and a short data scan before the seeing went bad. We switched back to scpectroscopy and finished a second plate. While mounting the correcor, we managed to break off the south safety latch. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We begin with spectroscopy, finishing one plate and getting one exposure on another before switching to the imager for binned scan tests. We finish the switch about 04:30Z, and start with a bias (suitable for use if we do imaging later tonight) to make sure everything is happy. During spectroscopy, we get another occurance of PR 3402. During the bias, with Ron on the phone, we get a ptvme error. We exit and kill various iop processes, and still the error persists. Finally, we do a ptvmeReset, and everything seems to recover. Switching to binned scans, we get the following error (twice) trying to start the scan: im> goDrift -bias Error: {id1 {}} {id2 {Lock operation failed}} {id3 {Lock operation failed}} {id4 {Lock operation failed}} {id5 {Lock operation failed}} {id6 {Lock operation failed}} {ad1 {Lock operation failed}} {ad2 {Lock operation failed}} {ad3 {Lock operation failed}} {ad4 {Lock operation failed}} Ron spent some time looking at DA status, and the third time we tried (with nothing done to actually correct the problem) it worked. This problem, however, was followed by several more ptvme problems. We struggle through these, and everything we start getting data as intended. We seem even to be able to go back and forth between binned and unbinned without difficulty. iciShow was used to examine what the crates were doing and whether the "in progress" flag was set, and iciSetInprog was used to set this flag where necessary. The linestart rate provided in the procedure for binned scan does not seem to match the scan velocity provided; the stars were short streaks. This is not a DA related problem. During these tests, we get a "no gangs (20: Mar 20 23:46:20 MST)" error from the watcher. After finishing with the binned scan tests, we get set up for an imaging scan (Steve's stripe 116 cross scan). In our initial attempt to start the scan, we get another "Lock operation failed" error, exactly as happened above (including not having the error assiciated with id1). A second try was successful; this was run 3058. The seeing deteriorates later in this run, around lambda=-5. We try and back up and start a new run to cover it, but the seeing continues to be bad, and we move back to spectro at 10:39Z. While raising the corrector lense to install it, we hear a loud bang. Lowering the lense and taking a look around, we find that the south safetly latch has broken off! The others appear okay.
