APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 14, 2002 (MJD 52379) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Mike Harvanek, Pete Newman Support: Carlos Gonzales (FNAL), French Leger (FNAL, by phone), Steve Kent (FNAL, by phone). Thanks, you guys! Visitors: Anders Jorgensen (LANL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science by the plan. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Plates 816, 885, 909 done. Imaged strip 32N between lambda +1 and +17, but bad seeing after lambda +12. We hope this run is long enough to be useful. Two hours lost to dust. We had a problem with the cartridge bay lift. See problems section #2 and PR3576 for details. We also had drive problems on the PT - see the PT night log for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: Steph confirmed the spectrograph focus was slightly out of tolerance after last night's report. See Spectrograph Focus section for details (follows Problems section). The Ne lamp above counterweight 4 (SW corner) died during focus checks and was replaced. SoS reported /data/spectro 97% full. We did sos_stop, cleared 15 nights of old MJD directories from sdsshost:/data/spectro and sos:/data/spectro, then sos_start and all was well. Is this why the SoS web server failed later? CCD02 reported a vrd2 error about 00:33Z. A watcher plot showed nominal at 14+-0.6, with two measurements at 12.4V around this time. Night shift: At sunset (01:30Z), it was not obvious what the clouds visible below 10deg alt to the west and south would do, so we started with spectroscopy and discovered excellent seeing at ~1.3. Moon set at 09:30Z also delayed imaging. At about 02:20Z we noticed the SoS web server was down. It restarted ok. See problem section #1 for details. Observing sequence: 01:50Z Plate 909, cartridge 9. Done in 3 exposures. fk5 found well before end of twilight with last night's offsets, then guide stars shortly after with no additional offsets. 03:37Z Switch to imager (see imaging sections below for run details). The imager cart air cushion pressure was down to ~28 psi. We used Dan's mager focus formula F = -250 - (20 x T) with T in Celsius and were dead in focus immediately. This was when the PT failed. Steve Kent advised us to image even if the PT was dead, but Carlos and French helped keep it alive. 05:45Z Dust closure until 07:45Z, followed by small clouds moving in, so just after we decided to open we decided to switch back to spectroscopy. 08:38Z Plate 885, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures. Guide stars on gotoField. On the first science exposure (14590) for r1, SoS warned "Bad sky residuals 5856 to 5925 Ang; Peak chi= 9.77" but all the numbers were in black. What causes that? 09:59 We lost ~ 10 minutes when the cartridge bay lift failed to recognise its lower stop position. See problem section #2 and PR 3576 for details. 10:13Z Plate 816, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures. Guide stars on gotoField. We had a recurrence of PR3402 on exposure 14596 which was a 900 sec exposure with EXPTIME showing 2 seconds. PR updated. endNight is running as this log is being mailed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3128 22:46Z 22:57Z 100 O -106.35 -103.62 31 ignore 3129 03:58Z 04:13Z 100 O -27.99 -24.44 38 bias (on telescope) 3130 04:17Z 05:35Z 32 N -2.13 17.62 145 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3130, strip 32 N Frame Lambda Comments ----- ------ ---------------------------- 9 -1.9 In focus, skippy happy right away. We had been happily looking at http://sos.apo.nmsu.edu/logfile-current.html and other pages during the afternoon. Around 02:20Z, we could not get to the web pages, netscape reporting the server was not accepting new connections or was busy. ps on sos showed no processes with http in their name. We logged in as root and checked /var/log/thttpd.log. [root@sos log]# grep htt messages Apr 14 20:27:11 sos thttpd: thttpd startup succeeded and all seemed well again. ------------------ Problem #2 - Cartridge bay lift position error I sent the cartridge bay lift to from its top position to the middle. It stopped. I then sent it down again towards the lowest position. A possible red herring: I moved the outdoor manipulator in too soon, crossed the light wall, and stalled the lift. I remove the manipulator again and re-commanded the lift down. This time, it did not stop at the lowest index position, but went right to the bottom. The motor continued to run until I hit the stop button. Not realising it had gone too far, I then got the manipulator apparently stuck on a cartridge in the bay. I had engaged the lugs on the cartridge, but then the manipulator would not move up or down, beeping each time I tried. Eventually, I managed to get it to release its brakes and move by grasping the handle and immediately pushing down. We were able to position the lift to the approximate correct lowest index position using the buttons. Further tests showed that the middle and upper lift index positions function correctly, but the lower position repeatedly fails to stop, continuing to the bottom of the bay with the motor continuing to run after that. PR cartridge-equip/3576 opened. ---=== SPECTROGRAPH FOCUS & COLLIMATION ===--- spectro focus check: -------------------- Cartridge 9 Temp=11.8 C -- IDL> collimate, 14575 % Compiled module: COLLIMATE.
