APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday July 2, 2002 (MJD 52458) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman Stephanie Snedden Jon Davis - generator support ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science following the usual priorities ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather kept us closed all night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- It's beginning to look a lot like monsoon season. Afternoon thunderstorms with hail turned Craig and Karen's garden into spinach & chard puree. We had high winds and nearby thunderstorms at sunset. Power went out at approx 0200Z and we remained on generator power until 0650Z.Trees were down across Sunspot highway and power was out to a good portion of Otero County, according to Camron. Later, we had elevated dust counts. It remained cloudy to mostly cloudy all night, with a brief sucker hole while we were waiting for the dust counts to stabilize. If you are thinking we never opened, you're right. The on-telescope bias from yesterday was used tonight to run biasGen and biasCheck. We could not open anyway because of weather, but even had it cleared we may have had to stay closed. The site generator power showed fluctuations every few minutes. Those who had experience being on generator power for long periods did not remember seeing these fluctuations before. We woke up Jon Davis, who noticed a fluctuation when the AC to the ops building came on, so it appears to be load related. The site staff will follow up on this in the morning.
