APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 28, 2002 (MJD 52607) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Mike Harvanek Night: Pete Newman, Jurek Krzesinski Support chefs: Scot Kleinman, Russet McMillan, Steph Snedden Food tasters: Jack Dembicky, Jackie Diehl (NSO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science - either astronomy, or biochemistry, or both depending on the weather. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A large weather system being driven up from the southwest by a static low pressure system parked off Baja delivered first clouds above us from before sunset, then around us from ~0615Z when the humidity went to 100%. Astronomy being thus precluded (or is that occluded?), we proceeded with seasonal biochemistry (see log). With no chance of respite visible on the satellite weather images, we gave up at ~10:30Z and ran endNight onto the "cloudy night" tapes. On a serious note, we ran into another unmanaged full disk - see problems section for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We could not open for astronomy, so, thanksgivingfully, we stayed closed for biochemistry. We conducted a number of animal and plant cell modification experiments in the southwest laboratory in the main building and the southwest laboratory of the new dormitory building. In the remainder of this log, we refer to these facilites as "kitchens". We determined that given an exposure to thermal IR radiation for ~1.5e4 seconds pavo cells emit a delicious aroma. We also determined that the flowers and pulverised roots of various plants are quite nutritious even after boiling or baking. Etc, etc. Ok, enough - here's the menu! Egg rolls Pecan snacks Dungeness Crab Missing Castle Soup (that's Castle-Free Soup to you Chicagoans) Exotic fruit salad (persimmons, yet!) Roast turkey au jus Mashed potato Sweet potato Parsnips Brussels sprouts Two kinds of stuffing (LOTS of stuffing!) Three kinds of bread English apple crumble with cream American cherry pie with ice cream Pumpkin pie Followed by Alka Seltzer (just kidding!). Hope y'all had as good a Thanksgiving Feast as we did! We found that the disk on hoggpt that holds directory /home/observer/irsc/data, mounted as /hoggpt/d6/irsc, was full. It was holding about 14Gb of IRSC data (from MJD 52551 to 52607 (tonight), and 9.5Gb of MT data (from MJD 52400 - 52578 - why nothing mroe recent I don't know). I made some space by removing IRSC data from MJDs before 52590, but that will buy only a temporary respite as it freed about 5% of the disk. The directory hoggpt/d6/irsc/pre-jeg-data/ contains about 4Gb of apparently static data - can this be removed? In any case, we need an implemented management policy for this disk. After removing the directories, a scanstop, wait until checkcam says the camera has stopped, then scanstart got everything going again. PR 4469 opened.
