APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 25, 2003 (MJD 52665) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman (APO; swing) Mike Harvanek (APO) Atsuko Nitta (APO) French Leger (APO; by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spent the night doing spectrograph biases in an attempt to clear the charge from the b1 ccd. We thought we had the charge cleared on several occasions but the charge would increase again no later than 30 minutes after the last good bias. It seems that if the tape covering the LED sensors had come off, we would see the charge increasing on both b1 and r1, not just b1. We are wondering if the ccd is damaged. We called Connie at home and work but could not reach her. Jon Brinkmann is out of town. We will call JEG or Alan Uomoto shortly. Some of the night would have been lost to clouds anyway and the 3.5m reported poor seeing (2.5-3.5") when it was open but we did lose some science time tonight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pete helped us setup today (thanks!). He took a bunch of biases in the afternoon to flush out the charge in the spectros. The charge build up was not as bad as yesterday. Hercules and Wendell were good in keeping the lights away from the CCDs (thanks!). We opened to partly cloudy skies at sunset. We had a windscreen touch when bringing the telescope back up after opening: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-01-26 00:21:42Z sdssmcp): 2003-01-26 00:21:58Z). Within 45 minutes of opening, the clouds thickened and became threatening so we closed the enclosure. We continued to take biases to flush the charge from the spectrographs. We thought we had the charge cleared around 0225Z when we had 12 good biases in a row (and 18 of the last 19 were good). However, we then had 20 bad biases in a row. At 0405Z we again thought we had the charge cleared after getting 17 good biases in a row. We decided to do a preCal to both test the shutter and check the collimation. We got the "goStare failed" messages so we checked the shutters (both sp1 and sp2) with mechSend s and both shutters were fine. We then exercised both shutters with mechSend os and mechSend cs and both operated properly. We logged out of the offending sop session. It was also realized that there was no startMon window open when the preCal had failed. After logging back into sop and opening up a startMon window, the preCal was successfully obtained. However, SoS could not reduce the b1 portion of the preCal. Another look at SoS showed that the two biases taken prior to the preCal (taken on plate -9999 rather than on plate 1162) were bad. So we took another bias after the preCal and a large charge had again accumulated. We were not sure if this was due to a shutter problem (although we found none) or just exposing the CCD to the light of a flat frame and an arc frame. We tried Connie at both home and work but could not reach her. We left a message and continued to take bias frames. The clouds started to thin about this time and we considered opening. However, we are not sure if good data could be obtained with the chip in this state and we are also concerned about damaging the chip. At 0843Z we again thought the charge had been cleared from the chip after getting 9 good biases in a row (frame 18745). Just as we were preparing to go down and open, the next bias was bad. We issued more biases and the charge actually increased for the next 4 biases. We are very puzzled by this behavior. If the tape was coming off the LED sensor shouldn't it increase the counts in both b and r, not just b? Is the chip damaged? We have spent most of the last 12 hours taking biases and it doesn't appear to be solving the problem. Will someone please advise us on how to proceed. If taking more biases will solve the problem, we will gladly do it. Otherwise we need to stop wasting time and come up with another plan. We had 8 good biases in a row at 1024Z but the charge increased again after that and we gave up around 1100Z. We will call JEG or Alan U shortly to see if we can come up with a plan for tomorrow. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
