APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday January 27, 2003 (MJD 52667) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Pete Newman (worked on spectrographs) Observers: Mike Harvanek Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric all night. Good seeing almost all night with some of the best seeing this telescope has ever seen. Completed the following imaging scans: Run 3628 - 61 S: lambda -162 to -138 (done) Run 3629 - 61 N: lambda -157 to -138 (done) Run 3630 - 15 N: lambda -67 to -31 Run 3631 - 16 S: lambda -67 to -15.6 before moonrise. lambda -15.6 to +8.4 after moonrise. A weird VME error - details below. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Photometric at sunset. We began with imaging. Run 3628 - 61 S. Completed all of the stripe and then some (lambda -162 to -138). Some of the best seeing we've ever had (0.65" in ccd 24, sub " for many of the chips for most of the run) and some of the most spectacular imaging data we've ever seen. Run 3629 - 61 N. Completed all of the stripe (lambda -157 to -138). Although we imaged this stripe last night, the middle third of that run was marred by bad seeing and the portions of that run with "good" seeing were nowhere near the kind of seeing we are having tonight. Since this scan is only one hour in length, we decided to take advantage of this rare opportunity and repeat this stripe tonight so that both halves of strip 61 could be completed in the same outstanding seeing. This strip should definitely have some PR value. We sacrificed less than an hour of higher priority survey imaging to accomplish this. We hope this is acceptable. The seeing was sub " for most of this run. We got an az too large to correct error: azimuth (correction for azimuth 119380 is too large (2003-01-28 04:35:25Z sdssmcp): 2003-01-28 04:35:49Z) Run 3630 - 15 N. Completed from lambda -67 to -31 before the seeing went bad. The seeing was excellent for the 1st 100+ frames then varied and slowly deteriorated until seeingRun called it bad at frame 250. At this point we decided to terminate the scan and try another stripe to see if a different pointing would yield better seeing. Run 3631 - 16 S. Great (sub ") seeing returned with the new pointing and the seeing remained near or below 1" for much of the run. Although there were a few excursions above 1.6", seeingRun called the seeing good for the entire run. When the three stripes that would give us plates became available, we considered switching to one of these. However, these stripes did not have as favorable a pointing in that they were all facing east to some degree (NE, SE, and SSE, respectively) and so the seeing probably would not be good (as per 15 N above). Thus, we decided to take the bird in the hand and continue on with 16 S. The moon rose at frame 350, lambda -15.6. After changing instruments we would have had only an hour before twilight and so, following procedure, we continued imaging and did NOT switch to spectroscopy. The telescope was pointed to the SW and the moon illumination was only 19% so we're not sure if this qualifies as bright time imaging. If not, perhaps some (if not all) of the data taken after moonrise is good. Astroline never complained about sky levels and plots of the sky values showed the increase to be small. We completed from lambda -67 to -15.6 before the moon rose and from lambda -15.6 to +8.4 after the moon rose. Please let us know if the data obtained after moonrise is survey quality. We took donuts at the end of this run. See the Imaging Details section for specifics. There was a weird VME error in frame 446 that appeared in all chips (photo and astro) in all dewars. Apparently, there were 2 extra pixels in one of the rows for every chip. Here are the watcher errors for id3 (which are typical of the photo chip errors; the astro chip errors were slightly different): dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000000 rowIdx:827 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000000 rowIdx:827 : 2003-01-28 11:47:16Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000004 rowIdx:827 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000004 rowIdx:827 : 2003-01-28 11:47:16Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000003 rowIdx:827 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000003 rowIdx:827 : 2003-01-28 11:47:16Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? 2130 should be 2128 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? 2130 should be 2128 : 2003-01-28 11:47:16Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000002 rowIdx:827 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000002 rowIdx:827 : 2003-01-28 11:47:16Z ) dsc E trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000001 rowIdx:827 (dsc_E_trcErr WRONG num of pix?? for (sr<<16)|ccd:0x00000001 rowIdx:827 : 2003-01-28 11:47:16Z ) ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3626 21:14Z 21:36Z 100 O 154.59 160.02 44 ignore doghouse 3627 00:28Z 00:45Z 100 O -156.88 -152.71 42 bias on telescope 3628 01:28Z 03:10Z 61 S -163.03 -137.63 183 science 61 S; all; great seeing 3629 03:13Z 04:33Z 61 N -157.52 -137.47 147 science 61 N; all; great seeing 3630 04:38Z 07:22Z 15 N -67.29 -26.08 288 science 15 N; lambda -67 to -31 3631 07:25Z 12:37Z 16 S -67.02 11.36 533 science 16 S; lambda -67 to -15.6 before moon lambda -15.6 to +8.4 after moon ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3628 - 61 S: Focus, seeing and pointing all good by frame 24. However, 18 degree twilight did not end until frame 50. Not sure how much sky brightness is tolerable but the seeing is some of the best we've ever had on this telescope and hopefully most, if not all, of the frames before 50 can be used. This is some of the most spectacular imaging data (both in quality and beauty) we've ever seen. Completed all of the stripe (lambda -162 to -138). The seeing was sub " for all but the first few frames. Run 3629 - 61 N: Focus, seeing and pointing all good from the beginning. Completed all of the stripe (lambda -157 to -138). The seeing was sub " for most of this run. Run 3630 - 15 N: Focus, seeing and pointing all good from the 2nd frame. Completed from lambda -67 to -31. The seeing was excellent for the 1st 100+ frames then varied and slowly deteriorated. seeingRun continued to call the seeing good until frame 250 at which point it went bad. Run 3631 - 16 S: Focus, seeing and pointing all good from the beginning. Completed from lambda -67 to -15.6 (frame 350) before the moon rose and from lambda -15.6 to +8.4 (frame 511) after the moon rose. The seeing remained near or below 1" for much of the run and seeingRun called the seeing good for the entire run. Donuts after frame 511 (in focus) are frame 519 (-300) and frame 522 (+300) and can be found in the usual place. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el
