WE completed imaging QA. problem 1: The secondary dewar of sp2 seemed to take a very long time to fill after we opened; see problems section for details. problem 2: We had a problem at the end of run# 3836 when the endDrift command was issued; see problems setion for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Night: _________ We opened at sunset under clear skies and with a light breeze from the north west. So, we started with the imager and stripe 15 N at lambda -32. 02:27Z After goDrift, we noticed that the seeing was bad but improving; consequently, we restarted 15 N at lambda -32 after about 30 minutes. 03:12Z After goDrift on the 15 N, lambda -32 restart, seeing was reported as "good." However, seeing conditions decreased to the "acceptable" range a couple of times during the first part of the stripe. Beyond these little bumps in the road, seeing continued to improve for the next several hours. We were able to complete this stripe, i.e., lambda -32 to 60. 10:11Z Started stripe 31S at lambda 08; seeing is very good. It's not clear what the real problem is, but here are the signs. All this occured with the telescope at stow position. On MJDs 52728 and 52729 (2003 March 29+30), the sp2 secondary dewar seemed to not stop filling with LN2 from the 180L dewar during top-up after opening. On both nights, sp1 filled and stopped as usual, but sp2 was still filling after about an hour. On 52728 (Scot reports), the fill was stopped manually, everything disconnected, 180L pressure built up again, then the hoses were reconnected and a fill restarted. It stopped automatically after a few minutes. On 52729 Pete was unaware of the previous behavior. At the point where sp1 had stopped and a total of ~45lb had been drawn down, when we would have expected the fill to end, we noted that the 180L dewar pressure had dropped to about 14psi, so the pressure-builing valve on the dewar was opened. Pressure rose to ~20psi. But when ~55lb of LN2 had been drawn, the fill was still going on, so we stopped the fill manually, disconnected and proceeded with observations. During this whole time, sp2 was venting gas and not liquid. What is up? It's a little confusing that after drawing down so much LN2 there was NOT liquid spill from the vent. Perhaps (and only perhaps) the sp2 vent was open too much (is that possible) and the loss of gas was due to the low 180L pressure? ____________________________________________________________________________ problem 2: At the end of run# 3836, Pete issued the endDrift command, but endDrift was not successful, i.e., only ID 1, 2, and 3 stopped. We also tried ptvmeReset without success. Next, we began closing iop sessions in order to reboot host. During the process of closing iop sessions, however, the drift concluded. We think the problem could be related to Pete's FocusLoop crash earlier in the evening, or that I had restarted FocusLoop on my machine (MONX 1).
