APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 30, 2003 (MJD 52882) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Atsuko Nitta, Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Opening delayed due to high humidity. Finished one plate and got one exposure on another plate. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: The monsoon is here: thunderstorms on the ridge keeping us closed during afternoon setup. Spectrogaphs' focus checked (Tamb=13.5C). Collimate reported camera b1 to be slightly out of focus (Mean offset = -0.17 pix), but no adjustment was applied. During fiducial checks, around 00:10Z, there were multiple slip events on the alt drive. This was due to a disgusting amount of moth guts on both surfaces, and it took several attempts to move the telescope far enough to clean them. Combined with being shat upon daily by the thousands of moths in the dorms, the support building, the main building, the PT enclosure and the Lindy cart shed, I am looking forward to the end of the survey if it means I never have to deal with another moth. Night shift: 06:00Z Dew point depression is around 3.0. We monitor to see if it will improve... 07:00Z Dew point depression is dropping. We wait. 08:00Z Dew point improving again. 08:30Z We open! All alt fiducials were reading despite of some moths. Jurek did not notice moths on the handle of the cart and squashed them with his hands. YUCK. Cartridge 6 plate 1123 We had one az correction too large to correct on the way to the field, but the telescope was able to correct errors at the next fiducial before reaching to the field. Guide stars on gotoField with offsets from few nights ago. The seeing is around 2". The mirror seems to be equibrated. 09:15Z The humidity is rising fast again. We are slightly below closure limit. We will watch and see if it stays there or not. 09:20Z Dewpt depp. hovers around 3.0. Seeing is getting worse. We manage to finish this plate. The sp1 smear did not get enough S/N. Probably the seeing was too poor for smear. 10:50Z Cartridge 5 Plate 1471 Stars on gotofield. We start the science exposures as the twilight starts. We did not finish this plate. 11:40Z Closed. endNight finished happily. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4087 23:10Z 23:35Z 100 O 35.59 41.81 50 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22143, plate -9999 ------- 23:12 22143 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22144, plate 1028 ------- 23:15 22144 2.1 arc 23:18 22145 2.1 arc 23:25 22146 2.1 arc 23:28 22147 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22149, plate 1123 ------- 16.7 14.9 20.4 16.2 09:07 22149 10.0 flat 09:09 22150 2.0 arc 09:33 22151 1200.1 target 10:01 22152 1500.1 target 10:34 22153 1800.1 target 10:42 22154 240.0 smear 10:45 22155 10.0 flat 10:47 22156 2.0 arc ----- sequence 22157, plate 1471 ------- 6.2 12.2 5.4 11.4 11:01 22157 10.0 flat 11:04 22158 2.0 arc 11:27 22159 1200.1 target 11:35 22160 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:46Z 6 1123 -19.94 0.0034 55.60 0.0009 163.27 0.0025 1.000240 11:11Z 5 1471 226.15 0.0017 66.88 0.0014 61.86 -0.0123 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6673 Stays: JL6674 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 09:46Z 6 1123 1.00024 -2369 -848 -50 -20 55.6 10.2 23 54 gdr 2.2 11:11Z 5 1471 1.00010 -986 119 -200 226 67.0 11.7 16 28 gdr 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:50Z 56 51 0 266 (W) 385 - 23:22Z 56 52 3 256 (WSW) 258 - 23:55Z 58 52 9 270 (W) 279 - 00:27Z 55 51 3 316 (NW) 240 - 07:26Z 49 44 26 61 (ENE) 30 - 07:58Z 51 42 22 59 (ENE) 64 - 08:30Z 52 41 17 52 (NE) 68 - 09:00Z 53 39 13 17 (NNE) 64 - 09:32Z 49 43 14 47 (NE) 37 - 10:03Z 51 42 16 44 (NE) 50 - 10:36Z 53 41 17 43 (NE) 52 - 11:08Z 52 41 15 33 (NNE) 90 - 11:41Z 53 41 7 28 (NNE) 92 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 08:30Z Fans on, Enclosure off. 11:40Z Fans off, enclosure on. dewars: spectro @ 104 imager @ 230 ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_119_0 Watcher: v2_24_0 MCP: v5_20_0 TPM: tpm_v2_30_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.1 July 22 2003 sdssProcedures: v1_73 SoS: v4_9_13 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0970 0.0790 Axial B 0.8170 0.7970 Axial C 0.8290 0.8240 Trans D -9.1000 -9.0560 Lateral E 1.8420 1.8870 Lateral F 0.0000 1.4300 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
