APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 16, 2003 (MJD 52929) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden Tech Support: Jon Brinkmann Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake and Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Some southern survey repeat imaging, some spectroscopy (one plate complete, another with good signal, and one with problems) and some shakedown. Current software: iop v3_120_0 segue iop s1_5_0 mcp v5_22_0 mcp_fiducials v1_9 SoS v4_10_6 sdssProcedures v1_77 Piezos behaved themselves all night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: --------- A spectro guider problem was found during afternoon check-out. Spectro focus was not checked because of guider trouble-shooting and the imager being mounted on the telescope. See the problems section for details. Jon updated the MCP's axis_cmds.c today, which then required building version v5_22_0 of the MCP. Steph and Jon did that during the afternoon, and checked that the proper fiducial tables were loaded. Night: --------- Tonight was a mix of shakedown and science. Once the guider problem was resolved, we set up for imaging. We started with 82 N, start lambda of 126. Details are in the imaging section below. We ended the stripe at moonrise and proceeded on to spectroscopy shake-and-science. Plate 1088, merged plate. Guide star at edge of fiber. Under tonight's weather and moon conditions, we expect to see Son of Spectro s/N^2 of about 4. That is about what we got. It looks like the latest version of Son of Spectro gives reasonable S/N values, but we asked the spectro reduction crew at FNAL to verify this. Completed this plate in 3600 s. Plate 1250, taurus plate. Needed an FK5 star...just off the fiber. This plate needed a very large scale change. The lack of guide stars may have been due to an azimuth too large to correct error, that was noticed a few minutes after the fact. Son of Spectro could not reduce the R1 exposures (we tried to re-reduce the first exposure withour success). The seeing was poor and there was a fair amount of moon, but it could also be a problem with the taurus plate (or Son of Spectro??). We sent an email to FNAL asking them to quickly reduce the exposures to see if they are any good. We stopped observing this plate and went to... Plate 1243, lowz plate. Guide stars on go to field. We accidentally killed the working SOP session and it took a few minutes to restart it, but then we were underway. We observed this plate until it expired, for a total of 6000 s. This is a high S/N plate, so although we got good signal in that time, we didn't quite finish the plate. At that point, we were out of observable plates for the night, so we packed it in. DIMM was set up at the beginning of the night. Prior to sending the Meade off to be overhauled, we wanted to check if the encoder was turning when the altitude drive failed. Within an hour, Polaris started to drift to the N edge of the chip. We used Armin's centering routine and monitored the reported telescope position as it tried to center Polaris. It appears that the encoder was not turning, because the alt coordinate did not change as the telescope attempted to center the star. Steph will call about the turnaround time for the overhaul, and the soonest that we can ship it. It's time to look for the packing crate. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4182 21:51Z 22:10Z 100 O 62.00 66.67 45 ignore 4183 01:26Z 01:43Z 100 O 115.85 120.20 43 bias on telescope Run 4184 didn't show up here (???) The usual suspects were checked and/or fixed (senSys2 driver changed to senSys, power to guider, traditional rebooting of the guider Mac). Nothing worked. Jon and Craig were then recruited. They began a systematic check starting with the SCSI connections (good), the A2S (good), the spare camera hooked up in the control room to a spare A2S (good), which led them to suspect the camera. It did indeed turn out to be the power brick to the camera. Once replaced, we were back in business.
