APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday October 20, 2003 (MJD 52933) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Dan Long, Pete Newman Support: Jon Brinkmann, French Leger (both by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We continue avoiding imaging due to servo oscillations. Finished 5 plates (1075, 1268, 1474, 1493, 1516) and good data on two (1152, 1517). The FStar plate (1153) accumlated S/N very slowly - are the magnitudes good? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- I (Jurek) issued goStare 0 -init -bias command in an iop window instead sop. But then I started the drift (goDrift -bias) in the iop window without any problems. DAs and imager behaved properly. Jon B. was testing the telescope (investigating the oscillation problem). MIGs ok.. Spectro (AT M1 TEMP 11.5): sp1 collimator was moved 6 pixels up, to get XMIN in spec (mechMoveColl -600 -600 600), all in focus. Night: ------ We still have somewhat unpredictable servo oscillations, so another night of not imaging under pristine dark skies (although only repeat imaging is available for most of the night at the moment). Observing sequence: Guide stars found on gotoField unless noted. 01:15Z Plate 1474, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures, 2340 s. Merged program requiring standard survey S/N. FK5 found on edge of guide fiber under bright sky before the end of twilight. 02:28Z Plate 1153, cartridge 6. Not done in 6 exposures, 7800 s. FStar program requiring (S/N)^2 >= 30 in all cameras. Despite good seeing guide stars that are only slightly fainter than normal in the guider monitor, the autoguider efficiency meter was reading about 50 per cent, compared to 90+ per cent on the previous plate. So we think the guide star magnitudes may be wrong. Thin clouds from 03:20Z. Based on the first two exposures, we estimate it will take a total of 240 minutes (14400s) to finish this plate in good conditions. Just at the end of the third exposure, around 03:51:30Z, we lost guide stars. We traced this to an apparent azimuth tracking error when we slewed back across the previous fiducials: 2003-10-21 03:28:44Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial -12.79 deg 2003-10-21 03:57:38Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -257 to azimuth 2003-10-21 04:00:27Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial -12.78 deg 2003-10-21 04:00:27Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -3275 to azimuth We accepted the fiducial error, returned to the field, and there were the guide stars. So, why did azimuth jump by 3000 ticks (42 arcsec) like that? Moth _in_ the encoder? Note that the slip detector did not trip, and a plot of the servo errors from TPM neither a glitch nor oscillation. Dan says he's never seen anything like this! We lost about 7 minutes. We made very slow progress on gaining S/N for this plate. Are the target stars fainter than their magnitudes would suggest, too? The plate design time expired before we could finish it, so we moved on. 05:27Z Plate 1493, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures, 2520 s. Merged program requiring standard survey S/N. 06:34Z Plate 1075, cartridge 9. Done in 3 exposures, 3300 s. Merged program requiring standard survey S/N. Seeing starting to degrade. The sp1 S/N are marginal, but the distribution on the S/N plot looks normal, so we are declaring the plate done. 08:00Z Plate 1516, cartridge 4. Done in 3 exposures, 3900 s. Merged program requiring standard survey S/N. 09:35Z Plate 1517, cartridge 5. Not done in 2 exposures, 2100 s. Merged program requiring standard survey S/N. A main survey plate became available before we could finish this plate so it was pre-empted. 10:36Z Plate 1268, cartridge 8. Done in 3 exposures, 3600 s. Survey plate. Guide stars found with cleared offsets. endNight is running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4195 22:58Z 23:19Z 100 O 82.86 88.02 48 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Y QA Procedures Done (y/n): N UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22767, plate -9999 ------- 23:28 22767 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22768, plate 1153 ------- Ignore: collimation checks 23:41 22768 0.0 bias 23:51 22769 10.0 flat 23:55 22770 2.0 arc 00:06 22771 10.0 flat 00:09 22772 10.0 flat 00:12 22773 2.0 arc 00:22 22774 10.0 flat 00:27 22775 10.0 flat 00:30 22776 2.0 arc 00:33 22777 2.1 arc 00:36 22778 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22779, plate 1474 ------- 20.7 18.4 22.0 20.8 DONE 00:46 22779 0.0 bias 01:33 22780 10.0 flat 01:35 22781 2.0 arc 01:54 22782 900.1 target 02:09 22783 720.1 target 02:24 22784 720.1 target ----- sequence 22785, plate 1153 ------- 15.5 18.9 21.3 24.1 Not done 02:38 22785 10.0 flat 02:41 22786 2.0 arc 03:04 22787 1200.1 target 03:27 22788 1200.1 target 03:55 22789 1500.1 target 04:32 22790 1500.1 target 04:55 22791 1200.1 target 05:17 22792 1200.1 target 05:20 22793 10.0 flat 05:23 22794 2.0 arc ----- sequence 22795, plate 1493 ------- 24.5 15.7 26.6 15.8 DONE 05:35 22795 10.0 flat 05:38 22796 2.0 arc 05:53 22797 720.1 target 06:12 22798 900.1 target 06:30 22799 900.1 target ----- sequence 22800, plate 1075 ------- 13.8 14.1 19.9 15.3 DONE 06:43 22800 10.0 flat 06:46 22801 2.0 arc 07:04 22802 900.1 target 07:27 22803 1200.1 target 07:50 22804 1200.1 target 07:53 22805 10.0 flat 07:55 22806 2.0 arc ----- sequence 22807, plate 1516 ------- 23.7 16.3 26.1 17.0 DONE 08:16 22807 10.0 flat 08:19 22808 2.0 arc 08:42 22809 1200.1 target 09:10 22810 1500.1 target 09:33 22811 1200.1 target ----- sequence 22812, plate 1517 ------- 10.0 7.6 13.2 8.8 Not done 09:47 22812 10.0 flat 09:49 22813 2.0 arc 10:13 22814 1200.1 target 10:31 22815 900.1 target ----- sequence 22816, plate 1268 ------- 20.4 15.9 19.2 17.8 DONE 10:46 22816 10.0 flat 10:48 22817 2.0 arc 11:11 22818 1200.1 target 11:34 22819 1200.1 target 11:57 22820 1200.1 target 12:00 22821 10.0 flat 12:03 22822 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:31Z Cart 2 38.95 0.0019 50.29 -0.0002 211.83 0.0128 1.000060 02:37Z Cart 6 10.77 0.0055 56.73 0.0008 188.95 0.0018 1.000110 05:34Z Cart 7 0.12 0.0043 57.25 0.0004 180.02 -0.0107 1.000050 06:41Z Cart 9 10.79 0.0050 56.74 0.0004 189.00 0.0117 1.000120 08:14Z Cart 4 8.24 0.0039 56.91 -0.0004 186.86 -0.0016 0.999980 09:58Z Cart 5 -33.46 0.0039 52.37 -0.0003 152.31 -0.0168 1.000010 10:59Z Cart 8 94.70 0.0006 55.43 0.0000 253.31 -0.0064 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6868 Stays: JL6869 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:31Z Cart 2 1.00006 -593 740 50 39 50.3 14.4 2 119 BG38 1.5 02:37Z Cart 6 1.00011 -1086 292 30 11 56.7 13.4 8 94 BG38 1.5 05:34Z Cart 7 1.00005 -494 701 -50 0 57.3 13.9 14 53 BG38 1.4 06:42Z Cart 9 1.00012 -1185 130 -50 11 56.7 13.4 13 45 BG38 1.4 08:14Z Cart 9 0.99998 198 1204 -120 8 56.9 12.2 2 0 BG38 1.9 09:58Z Cart 5 1.00001 -99 1042 -50 -33 52.4 11.6 0 259 BG38 2.1 10:59Z Cart 8 1.00014 -1383 -54 -75 95 55.4 11.8 0 234 BG38 2.1 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:05Z 62 28 2 223 (SW) 444 -
