APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday October 28, 2003 (MJD 52941) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden Jurek Krzesinski (swing) French Leger Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds early on but thinning and clearing as the night progressed. Three plates finished (1505, 1563, 1583). Good data on 2, maybe 3, plates (1152, 1539, 1257?). See log for details on 1257. The telescope behaved itself tonight as Papa French was near. Aurora seen during the night. Probably some data contaminated. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- imager - ok., DAs - ok. spectrographs ok, in focus. MIGs ok., telescope fiducialized. Night: ------ Clouds and moon at sunset so we begin with spectroscopy. Had a windscreen touch upon opening: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-10-29 00:31:43Z sdssmcp): 2003-10-29 00:31:53Z) Plate 1152 (cartridge 6): Guide stars on the gotoField. There is a weird pattern on the guider frames (about frames 100 to 150; two frames are saved in/d3/usrdevel/harvanek if anyone is interested). We obtained 3 good exposures (4800 s total) before clouds became too thick. A 4th exposure was lost to clouds and was declared bad. Plate 1539 (cartridge 7): No guide stars. No FK5 star on a 90 s exposure. We thought it was just clouds but then noticed we had an az correction too large to correct: azimuth (correction for azimuth -7464 is too large (2003-10-29 03:26:25Z sdssmcp): 2003-10-29 03:26:38Z). We forced a fiducial crossing and went to the field again. This time we found the FK5 star and then guide stars but clouds were still too heavy to obtain data. The weird pattern seems to have disappeared from the guider frames. The clouds thinned enough to attempt science. The 1st exposure was lost to clouds and declared bad but the 2nd exposure (1800 s) was usable. We got an error when trying to update the plug plate database. See the problems section for details. When clicking on update, the error message appeared. Clicking the back button on the browser and clicking on update again seemed to solve the problem. Later it was found that this might be a browser problem and not a database problem. Plate 1505 (cartridge 9): Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 4 exposures (4800 s total). An aurora was seen in the northwest approximately 20 - 30 degrees above the horizon. Nice red color. Tonight's spectra may be contaminated. Please let us know if any data are bad. Plate 1563 (cartridge 4): FK5 needed. When combined with data from a previous night (52940), this plate was finished in 4 exposures (4200 s total). Plate 1583 (cartridge 8): Guide stars on the gotoField. Done in 3 exposures (2700 s total). Plate 1257 (cartridge 1): No guide stars. No FK5. FK5 found about 10 asec north. Guide stars are very faint. We took 1 exposure but it extended 25 minutes past twilight. We got warnings from SoS and the 2 cameras that SoS was able to reduce had yellow sky values. SoS did not reduce the other two cameras (not enough sky fibers?). We are doubtful that this data is good. Peregrine, could you have a look? At least we verified that this plate is observable (there were problems with this plate a few nights ago). endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4226 23:10Z 23:29Z 100 O 93.59 98.49 47 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES except for plate 1257 UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22979, plate -9999 ------- 22:58 22979 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22980, plate 1563 ------- 23:11 22980 0.0 bias 23:16 22981 10.0 flat test 23:24 22982 2.0 arc test 23:30 22983 2.1 arc test 23:32 22984 2.1 arc test Frames 22985 - 22988 are all test arcs.
