APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday October 29, 2003 (MJD 52942) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden (swing) Jurek Krzesinski visitors: Rich Kron French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectroscopy and clouds (lots of clouds). A caveat to watch out for auroral lines in the spectra. One plate declared done, with useable signal on two others. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Imager - ok. DAs - ok. Spectrographs -ok, in focus. MIGs - ok. Telescope fiducialized. Night: ------ Just as we were preparing to open, the dust counts spiked. The doors were closed back up and the building pressurized. According to John Barentine, the winds were howling earlier in the basin, and the dust was very visible. 03:20Z - Reopened for spectroscopy. There is a good chance for auroral activity tonight. Look out for auroral lines in the spectra. 03:47Z - Cartridge 7, plate 1539. Low-z plate. No guide stars on goToField, but clearing the large offsets from last night got us an FK5. Rich Kron remarked on a couple of fiber bundles that were getting a slightly lower throughput on the flat field. We normally see some variation between bundles, but it was more obvious on the monitors tonight. A comparison of counts from a fainter block showed it ranged from 20% - 33% fainter than its neighbors. French thought it was time to check the glue on the blocks holding the bundles. A PR was filed as a reminder. Clouds came and went, so acquiring photons was a bit of a battle. Note that we did not take a requested post-cal because of a problem with the flat field screen switch, which French fixed, but required moving the telescope to stow azimuth. After the switch was fixed, it was too late to get the post-cals. We obtained two good exposures totalling 2400 s, but could not yet declare the plate done. 06:56Z - Cartridge 9, plate 1509. Merged plate. Stars on goToField. We had trouble getting the guide stars to center, so took another guider flat. That fixed the problem. This plate was declared done with a total exposure of 4200 s. 08:57Z - Cartridge 4, plate 1629. Photo-z plate. Stars on goToField. A combination of bad seeing and clouds beat down the efficiency, but some useful signal was obtained with a total exposure time of 3600 s. 10:30Z - Cartridge 8, plate 1584. Survey plate. Needed an FK5 to find the guide stars. Seeing was miserable. Clouds came and went. We took one 1200 s exposure that didn't make (S/N)^2 >2.0 in r2. After that the clouds got worse and we waited. Twilight came and the clouds were still thick. We closed. The rotator behaved itself all night, although we did see one "max accl exceeded" (logged in the problems section). endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4227 22:44Z 23:06Z 100 O 88.14 93.64 46 ignore 4228 23:26Z 23:35Z 100 O 98.69 100.95 26 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:07 23025 10.0 flat 23:10 23026 2.0 arc 23:13 23027 2.1 arc 23:16 23028 2.1 arc 23:28 23029 2.1 arc 23:30 23030 2.1 arc ----- sequence 23031, plate -9999 ------- 00:54 23031 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23032, plate 1539 ------- 18.3 14.6 20.2 13.4 04:04 23032 10.0 flat 04:06 23033 2.0 arc 04:32 23034 1200.1 target 04:55 23035 1200.1 target 05:06 23036 483.2 target 05:32 23037 1200.1 target 06:27 23038 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23039, plate 1509 ------- 26.6 15.5 28.8 20.5 07:17 23039 10.0 flat 07:20 23040 2.0 arc 07:44 23041 1200.1 target 08:07 23042 1200.1 target 08:40 23043 1800.1 target 08:44 23044 10.0 flat 08:46 23045 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23046, plate 1629 ------- 8.9 4.5 8.8 8.0 09:08 23046 10.0 flat 09:10 23047 2.0 arc 09:36 23048 1200.1 target 09:59 23049 1200.1 target 10:22 23050 1200.1 target 10:25 23051 10.0 flat 10:28 23052 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23053, plate 1584 ------- 10:50 23053 10.0 flat 10:52 23054 2.0 arc 11:17 23055 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:10Z cart 7 9.03 0.0036 56.90 0.0000 187.49 -0.0170 1.000270 07:22Z cart 9 -9.32 0.0050 56.80 -0.0008 172.12 0.0019 1.000030 09:16Z cart 4 -33.85 0.0041 52.20 0.0017 152.01 -0.0129 1.000390 10:55Z cart 8 72.17 -0.0004 65.07 0.0003 239.97 -0.0129 1.000310 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6946 Stays: JL6947 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:11Z cart 7 1.00027 -2665 -746 300 9 56.9 9.4 27 264 - 1.6 06:13Z cart 7 1.00019 -1875 -194 175 -42 49.2 8.3 23 266 - 2.1 07:22Z cart 9 1.00003 -296 1066 150 -9 56.8 7.3 24 266 - 1.9 09:16Z cart 4 1.00039 -3850 -1814 200 -34 52.2 5.6 21 269 - 2.0 10:55Z cart 8 1.00031 -3060 -1193 200 72 65.1 4.3 22 267 - 2.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:03Z 56 19 14 260 (W) 1335 - pcl 23:34Z 55 19 18 240 (WSW) 1659 - " 00:07Z 51 19 17 249 (WSW) 3885 - " 00:39Z 49 19 15 237 (WSW) 3762 - " 01:12Z 49 19 17 242 (WSW) 4748 - " 01:44Z 48 19 20 238 (WSW) 4123 - " 02:16Z 48 19 18 249 (WSW) 2866 - " 02:48Z 49 20 21 263 (W) 2215 - " 03:20Z 49 21 23 268 (W) 846 - " 03:53Z 49 21 16 260 (W) 758 - " 04:23Z 49 20 15 275 (W) 939 - " 04:57Z 48 20 27 270 (W) 694 - " 05:29Z 47 20 22 268 (W) 679 - " 06:01Z 47 20 21 266 (W) 711 - " 06:34Z 46 20 22 269 (W) 721 - " 07:05Z 45 19 22 264 (W) 649 - " 07:37Z 45 18 15 266 (W) 616 - " 08:07Z 44 19 16 269 (W) 627 - " 08:38Z 43 18 22 267 (W) 744 - " 09:11Z 42 19 14 268 (W) 718 - " 09:44Z 41 19 27 267 (W) 703 - " 10:16Z 40 21 25 267 (W) 674 - " 10:48Z 39 21 15 276 (W) 688 - " 11:20Z 39 21 18 270 (W) 694 - mcl 11:53Z 39 21 19 290 (WNW) 753 - " 12:26Z 38 21 20 303 (WNW) 706 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:10Z fans on. 00:02Z fans off, doors closed, building pressurized - dust 00:23Z - Imager dewar swapped out. 03:20Z - Opened enclosure.
