APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday October 30, 2003 (MJD 52943) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Marginal conditions all night. We finished two plates, but got signal and several more. No major problems. Cartridge 2 appeared in worse focus than the other cartridges observed tonight. Could the hardware please be checked out? Cart 5, plate 1495 didn't quite get done, but the SoS plots suggest it may be done after all. If someone can take a look, we'd be appreciative. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- It was fairly cloudy, windy, and smokey at twilight, but none of these was bad enough to stay closed, so we opened and started with cart 2 plate 1521. Conditions, although not bad enough to force us to close, were bad enough to preclude gathering any useful photons. We stood by waiting... Things eventually cleared up and we started gathering a few useful photons, although we got worse S/N than expected. We went back to look at the guiderFlat and found it fuzzier than that from cartridge 3. Could someone please check the cartridge 2 guider focus position/shim? This plate expired before it was done, so we went on to cart 3 plate 1476. GSOTGTF. We didn't finish this plate before it expired. Next up, cart 7 plate 1539. GSOTGTF. During the instChange, Dan's SOP suffered a TCC timeout, but recovered properly. The tb is in the Problems section. This was accompanied by too large to correct fiducial readings in all three axes! We actually finished this plate before going on to cart 5 plate 1495. GSOTGTF. We didn't quite finish this plate according to SoS, but closer examination of the SoS S/N plots suggest there are special circumstances pushing the one bad spectrograph (r1) down relative to the other 3 (Which were S/N of 18+). We therefore suspect this guy is done, but did not declare it so. If anyone wants to look at the data/plots and pronounce it done, we'd be willing to so declare it. Next up cart 9, plate 1508. GSOTGTF. We didn't finish this plate before it expired, so on to Cart 8, plate 1584. No GSOTGTF, but this may be due to increasing clouds or to pointing nearly 180deg in az from where we have been pointing all night. We actually finished this plate for our second of the night. We did the required postCalibs and closed up for the night. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4229 23:00Z 23:15Z 100 O 93.16 96.75 29 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23057, plate -9999 ------- 00:20 23057 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23058, plate 1584 ------- 00:26 23058 10.0 flat 00:29 23059 2.1 arc 00:32 23060 2.1 arc ----- sequence 23061, plate 1521 ------- 02:15 23061 10.0 flat 02:17 23062 2.0 arc 02:40 23063 1200.1 target 03:03 23064 1200.1 target 03:31 23065 1500.1 target 03:35 23066 10.0 flat 03:37 23067 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23068, plate 1476 ------- 03:49 23068 10.0 flat 03:51 23069 2.0 arc 04:15 23070 1200.1 target 04:38 23071 1200.1 target 05:01 23072 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23073, plate 1539 ------- 05:17 23073 10.0 flat 05:19 23074 2.0 arc 05:43 23075 1200.1 target 06:05 23076 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23077, plate 1495 ------- 06:22 23077 10.0 flat 06:24 23078 2.0 arc 06:42 23079 900.1 target 07:05 23080 1200.1 target 07:33 23081 1500.1 target ----- sequence 23082, plate 1508 ------- 07:47 23082 10.0 flat 07:50 23083 2.0 arc 08:13 23084 1200.1 target 08:36 23085 1200.1 target 08:59 23086 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23087, plate 1584 ------- 09:21 23087 10.0 flat 09:23 23088 2.0 arc 09:51 23089 1500.1 target 10:19 23090 1500.1 target 10:47 23091 1500.1 target 11:15 23092 1500.1 target 11:43 23093 1500.1 target 11:46 23094 10.0 flat 11:48 23095 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:24Z 2-1521 -12.43 0.0027 56.69 0.0000 169.50 -0.0129 1.000030 03:55Z 3-1476 -31.62 0.0058 52.89 -0.0001 153.77 -0.0012 0.999960 05:23Z 7-1539 -25.30 0.0038 54.57 -0.0002 158.86 -0.0141 1.000110 06:20Z 5-1495 -30.24 0.0044 53.35 -0.0007 154.86 -0.0201 0.999960 07:56Z 9-1508 -28.78 0.0052 53.83 -0.0010 156.06 -0.0005 0.999950 09:26Z 8-1584 88.23 0.0004 47.60 -0.0009 245.37 -0.0068 1.000320 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:24Z 2-1521 1.00003 -296 1091 175 -13 56.7 6.8 22 257 gdr 1.9" 03:55Z 3-1476 0.99996 395 1574 75 -32 52.9 6.6 21 262 gdr 1.3" 05:23Z 7-1539 1.00011 -1086 343 75 -25 54.6 6.6 17 255 gdr 1.4" 06:19Z 5-1495 0.99996 395 1637 140 -30 53.4 6.2 18 259 gdr 2.0" 07:56Z 9-1508 0.99995 494 1718 140 -29 53.8 5.4 17 256 gdr 1.7" 09:26Z 8-1584 1.00032 -3159 -1327 100 88 47.6 4.4 11 234 gdr 1.8" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:01Z 46 20 17 267 (W) 1450 - 23:33Z 46 20 17 268 (W) 1775 - 00:04Z 45 19 23 265 (W) 1733 - 00:35Z 45 18 25 256 (WSW) 1612 - 01:06Z 45 18 25 255 (WSW) 1717 - 01:37Z 44 19 22 265 (W) 1740 - 02:07Z 43 20 18 259 (W) 1958 - 02:38Z 44 20 21 257 (WSW) 1896 - 03:08Z 44 20 20 263 (W) 1600 - 03:38Z 44 21 25 268 (W) 1530 - 04:08Z 43 21 21 251 (WSW) 1371 - 04:38Z 44 22 23 257 (WSW) 1322 - 05:09Z 43 22 18 261 (W) 1447 - 05:39Z 44 22 18 254 (WSW) 1335 - 06:10Z 42 22 17 250 (WSW) 1507 - 06:40Z 42 23 17 237 (WSW) 1406 - 07:10Z 43 23 20 255 (WSW) 1309 - 07:40Z 42 23 14 259 (W) 1591 - 08:11Z 41 23 13 255 (WSW) 1445 - 08:41Z 40 24 16 231 (SW) 1294 - 09:11Z 40 25 8 254 (WSW) 1508 - 09:44Z 39 26 12 247 (WSW) 1380 - 10:16Z 40 26 9 253 (WSW) 1437 - 10:48Z 40 26 9 264 (W) 1437 - 11:19Z 40 27 8 268 (W) 1473 - 11:50Z 42 25 13 268 (W) 1159 - Cloudy most of the night. ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- We opened around 01:00Z with no pre-ventilating. The track command did work , however, and Dan noted he noticed what at first glance appeared to be an abnormal amount of listernToTCC messages (once per second) in the murmur log than usual (5:04:54 back to 5:01:53). It looks like it was already cut off from the TCC receiving end at this poit... ? At any rate,...
