APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 28, 2003 (MJD 53002) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden & Jurek Krzesinski Swing Howard Brewington on phone: Jim Gunn and Jon Brinkman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Problems with sp1 - during long afternoon checkout and during the night. Most of the night lost because sp1 refused to work and ptvme problem. We think we narrowed the problem with sp1 to reaching the actuator B limit (see the problem section). The temperature tonight was changing between 11.1 C and 13.1 C. In spite of those problems we got a couple of exposures on plate 1135 and we've done plate 1565, 1430 and 1359. u3 went wrong tonight as well- an e-mail to Jim about captured bias frames was sent to Jim (see it in the problem section). Problems with refilling spectro dewars. At the evening we had to use a warm air blower on valves to make them to work. Then on the morning, just to be safe we checked if spectro dewars can refill themselfs -no they couldn't. This time warming them up didn't help. We tried to warm them up for longer time and finaly got them filling up. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- While checking imager with bias we noticed that U3 got a high level of bias (8700), while the rest of the chips got usual 1000 - 1800. We called Jim and explained what we see. But it looks like we cannot do anything about it. So we will just run bias during the night and will keep an eye on U3. Temperature is getting low - at sunset we already got -12.5 C. Spectrographs: we tried to move the collimator around to see if it behaved properly tonight - it seems to work, but not quite...It appears we are reaching the limit on sp1 actuator B when the weather dips below -12 C or so. In this case, it is not possible to get sp1 to stay in focus. The step-by-step details are in the problems section. We checked imager bias again - U3 bias level dropped to 1600, then to 0 and and stayed there. Sample frames were pulled over for Jim, as well as a plot of the bias fluctuations. See the end of the problems section for the details on these files. Eventualy we got sp1 barely in spec (as described in the problem section). 02:15Z After final adjustment of spectrographs, we mounted cart 2 plt 1135, and opened the telescope. Then we got problems with refilling specterographs dewars. We had to use Carlos's method to be able to force filling spectrographs ie: disconnect hoses and warming up valves. Then spectrographs filled up with out problems. How we are doing with spectrographs? Flat and arc are ok. - good. 02:40Z Stars on slew :)))), but terribly out of focus. Got two exposures on that plate and had to replace it since it expired. 03:51Z Cart 3 plt 1565 mounted. Fk5 star used to get the guide stars. Spectrograph focus deteriorated. It's mariginal after we took precalib. We decided to refocus it before it will go bad in the middle of our observing. Refocusing done within ~30 minutes - sp1 is happy again. 04:27Z Back to science. Plate done with 5 exposures (but sp1 went out of focus: WSIGMA blue1 apeared to be red on post calib). 06:33Z Cart 5 plt 1149 mounted. Fk5 used to find the guide stars. But since sp1 wnet out of focus again, we had to correct that problem. Well, we were able to piston sp2, but pistoninig sp1 failed (see the problem section for the error message). We cannot do imaging (u3 is not working), sp1 is not working. 08:08Z Temperature is dropping (slightly: -11 C at the moment), we will continue taking arcs time to time and will try to piston sp1, to see if we can make it working at lower temperatures. After a while we decided to mount another cartidge and see what will happen with sp1. 09:04Z cart 6 plt 1430 mounted. We are checking spectrograph focus again. Maybe different telescope position will make sp1 working? Well - We got spectrograph sp1 in spec (yellow, but ok.), but sp2 WAVEMIN is red this time. After correcting for that, we got both sp1 and sp2 in spec! Fk5 star needed to find the guide stars, but we can do some science :). Temperature is dropping again (-12.7C). 10:30Z We lost servers and Steph lost her sop session :(. See the problem section for details. We tried ptvmeReset but it didin't work. It took about 10 minutes to recover (well we thought that we did) from ptvme problem. Then we tried to endStare -force to get our last exposure, which was in progress when ptvme problem occured: sp1> endStare -read -force, but it didn't work (see the problem section forerror information). Exposure got lost (Steph says: "its no longer with us"). 10:58Z We setuped again for the field, unfortunately we have to start with goto field and precalib... :(. No it didn't work - Steph's sop window got frozen. We ended up rebooting crates (all of them) and restarting SOP from scratch. Then we were able to get another bias and resume observations. 11:34Z Again we had to use fk5 star and we started with precalib. So for this plate we'll have two precalibs and two chunks of data. We declared plate done but this one will have to be analysed as if data were collected in two separate nights to avoid reduction problems - is it right DAVID? 12:16Z Cart 7 plt 1359 mounted. Fk5 used. Spectrographs are in spec. The plate done with one exposure in addition to two preivous ones. After we closed the telescope we tried to force refill spectrographs dewars, because we knew that it might have problems with that on it's own. And indeed tehy couldn't start. Even after varming the valves up with the hot air it didn't work. We cannot leve them at that point since it's dangerous for ccds. So, we decided realy warm them for a long time. This time dewars started to refill. endnight rejoced but shortly after that we've got ptvme problem and sop session disapeared we decided to reboot crates again and reboot host as well. If that will not work we will ask Craig for help. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4349 22:28Z 22:51Z 100 O 143.30 148.93 52 ignore 4350 00:26Z 09:06Z 100 O 172.79 -56.73 885 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes (see plate 1135 comment below) UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 24305, plate 1565 ------- 22:56 24305 10.0 flat 22:59 24306 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24307, plate -9999 ------- 23:57 24307 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24308, plate 1565 ------- 00:17 24308 10.0 flat 00:19 24309 2.0 arc 00:32 24310 10.0 flat 00:34 24311 2.0 arc 00:42 24312 10.0 flat 00:44 24313 2.0 arc 00:52 24314 10.0 flat 00:54 24315 2.0 arc 01:06 24316 10.0 flat 01:09 24317 2.0 arc 01:16 24318 2.0 arc 01:26 24319 2.0 arc 01:32 24320 10.0 flat 01:38 24321 2.1 arc 01:40 24322 2.1 arc ----- sequence 24323, plate 1135 ------- 02:08 24323 10.0 flat 02:11 24324 2.0 arc 02:54 24325 10.0 flat 02:57 24326 2.0 arc 03:17 24327 900.1 target raw CCD image looks ok, but we couldn't 03:34 24328 900.1 target get QATopTen to show any bright or fiant 03:38 24329 10.0 flat objects. 03:41 24330 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24331, plate 1565 ------- 04:00 24331 10.0 flat 04:03 24332 2.0 arc 04:08 24333 2.1 arc 04:11 24334 2.1 arc 04:21 24335 10.0 flat 04:24 24336 2.0 arc 04:45 24337 900.1 target 05:03 24338 900.1 target 05:26 24339 1200.1 target 05:49 24340 1200.1 target 06:18 24341 1500.2 target 06:21 24342 10.0 flat 06:23 24343 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24344, plate 1149 ------- 06:45 24344 10.0 flat 06:48 24345 2.0 arc 06:55 24346 2.1 arc 06:58 24347 2.1 arc 07:55 24348 10.0 flat 07:58 24349 2.0 arc 08:39 24350 10.0 flat 08:41 24351 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24352, plate 1430 ------- 09:03 24352 10.0 flat 09:06 24353 2.0 arc 09:19 24354 2.0 arc 09:29 24355 2.0 arc 09:39 24356 10.0 flat 09:42 24357 2.0 arc 10:04 24358 900.1 target 10:18 24359 600.1 target ----- sequence 24367, plate -9999 ------- 11:25 24367 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24369, plate 1430 ------- 11:30 24369 0.0 bias 11:41 24370 10.0 flat 11:44 24371 2.0 arc 12:05 24372 900.1 target ----- sequence 24373, plate 1359 ------- 12:20 24373 10.0 flat 12:23 24374 2.0 arc 12:48 24375 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:01Z 2 1135 -44.27 0.0037 48.06 -0.0029 143.99 -0.0033 0.999760 04:29Z 3 1565 -16.22 0.0058 56.15 -0.0046 166.37 0.0017 0.999610 09:50Z 6 1430 118.29 -0.0052 73.30 -0.0032 -73.03 -0.0062 0.999990 11:58Z 6 1430 234.70 -0.0064 77.54 0.0019 62.38 -0.0029 0.999950 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7148 Stays: JL7149 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:01Z 2 1135 0.99976 2369 3624 475 -44 48.1 -12.9 15 339 gdr 1.9 04:29Z 3 1565 0.99961 3850 4750 400 -16 56.2 -13.1 16 345 gdr 1.9 09:50Z 6 1430 0.99999 99 1508 300 118 73.3 -12.7 13 12 gdr 1.7 11:58Z 6 1430 0.99995 494 1879 350 235 77.5 -11.6 7 20 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:31Z 10 -9 9 332 (NNW) 0 - 23:03Z 10 -10 14 349 (NNW) 0 - 23:35Z 10 -10 16 329 (NNW) 0 - 23:59Z 9 -10 12 297 (WNW) 0 - 00:35Z 8 -9 5 300 (WNW) 155 - 01:08Z 8 -8 8 350 (NNW) 156 - 01:40Z 8 -8 1 317 (NW) 137 - 02:11Z 8 -8 16 346 (NNW) 134 - 02:43Z 8 -8 17 351 (NNW) 139 - 03:14Z 8 -8 14 347 (NNW) 123 - 03:45Z 8 -5 12 307 (NW) 114 - 04:16Z 8 -5 9 356 (NNW) 105 - 04:46Z 8 -4 9 39 (NE) 104 - 05:18Z 7 -4 10 6 (N) 112 - 05:50Z 8 -4 12 15 (NNE) 93 - 06:22Z 8 -4 14 3 (N) 79 - 06:54Z 8 -4 14 16 (NNE) 93 - 07:27Z 8 -3 12 12 (NNE) 112 - 07:59Z 12 -10 8 10 (N) 42 - 08:29Z 11 -10 17 30 (NNE) 59 - 08:59Z 10 -10 18 10 (N) 49 - 09:30Z 10 -9 13 23 (NNE) 73 - 10:02Z 9 -7 17 31 (NNE) 54 - 10:36Z 10 -8 18 20 (NNE) 62 - 11:07Z 11 -10 23 6 (N) 47 - 11:40Z 10 -11 9 3 (N) 47 - 12:11Z 10 -11 15 26 (NNE) 60 - 12:44Z 13 -18 15 357 (NNW) 62 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:30Z Doors open, fans on. 02:15Z Telescope opened.
