APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday April 8, 2004 (MJD 53104) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: John Barentine Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake/Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Tonight, after a few hours delay due to clouds, we got a good pointing model with less than 2 arcsecond sky rms. The imager was then put on and tested. Pointing was excellent. Collimation did not need tweaking. Data taken in test on run 4540 may be useful as a test of bright but otherwise good conditions (photometric, decent seeing). Finally a cartridge was put on and spectroscopy tested on sky. Some science data collected. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ------ The afternoon checkout was uneventful. The spectro focus was not checked because the engCam was mounted. Night: ------ 00:45Z Doors Open, Fans On. 01:27Z Clouds and nearby rain delay opening. 05:00Z Opening. Both azimuth encoders registered a slip on the test slew. Clearing and reslewing worked. 05:30Z Set up and started 72 point model Fixing the model parameters and fitting the data set showed an approximate 7 arcsecond rms pointing error, almost exactly the magnitude of the change in the engcam instrument block made last night. Allowing the model parameters to vary resulted in a fit of 1.8 arcseconds sky rms. A quick 24 point data set was taken with the new model to confirm pointing improvement. Below is the output of tpoint for the three cases described above. This scan ran for about 70 frames and might be useful for testing how much sky background can be handled, as skies were clear and seeing was good. Thus imaging tapes will be shipped. It should be noted that skippy was showing Mu errors of only a few arcseconds and Nu errors less than an arcsecond. The combination of updated engcam instrument block and a new pointing model seems to have substantially improved pointing for the imager over last run. Run 4541 Collimation check. Seeing was deteriorating so the check wasn't as sensitive as it could be, but from what we could tell the donuts were showing us reasonably well collimated. Run 4542 Bias on telescope to be paired 09:08Z Switching to spectroscopy 09:46Z Cartridge 7 1394 7.5 8.2 8.3 9.6 Needed FK5, it was found at the edge of the fiber. Better than last run, but it looks like the spectro instrument block could use some tweaking. Got two good science exposures, but lots of moonlight and not enough time before twilight kept us from finishing the plate. Third exposure had just enough sky/sec to go red in b2 (62/sec instead of 56), so it was not counted in the total. 11:35Z Closing up. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4539 22:55Z 23:10Z 100 O -109.57 -105.79 39 ignore 4540 08:07Z 08:54Z 24 N 41.34 53.15 91 engineering 4541 08:56Z 09:06Z 24 N 53.80 56.24 30 science should be ignore 4542 09:09Z 09:33Z 100 O 44.35 50.48 42 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4540 16 4 66 -2.600 0.134 0.700 0.139 0.00149 111 72 4540 27 4 61 -3.500 0.102 0.400 0.136 0.00103 113 72 4540 67 4 65 -2.600 0.217 0.200 0.252 0.00124 121 71 4540 79 4 57 -1.800 0.110 0.100 0.113 0.00032 123 70 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4540 37 1 71 64 20 -0.061 0.333 -0.150 0.321 0.00050 4540 37 1 71 64 25 -0.217 0.313 -0.031 0.338 0.00011 4540 37 1 71 64 19 -0.075 0.305 -0.004 0.243 0.00001 4540 37 1 71 64 19 -0.371 0.307 -0.191 0.130 0.00064 4540 37 1 71 64 23 -0.606 0.252 -0.111 0.147 0.00037 4540 54 1 71 61 30 -0.613 0.408 -0.324 0.329 0.00109 4540 54 1 71 61 25 -0.817 0.255 -0.218 0.290 0.00073 4540 54 1 71 61 21 -0.782 0.351 -0.307 0.265 0.00103 4540 54 1 71 61 22 -0.893 0.231 -0.142 0.311 0.00048 4540 54 1 71 61 16 -1.127 0.301 -0.044 0.332 0.00015 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 26005, plate -9999 ------- 22:57 26005 0.0 bias ----- sequence 26006, plate -9999 ------- 01:14 26006 0.0 bias ----- sequence 26007, plate 1394 ------- 7.5 8.2 8.3 9.68 10:12 26007 10.0 flat 10:15 26008 2.0 arc 10:34 26009 900.1 target 10:57 26010 1200.1 target 11:28 26011 1200.1 target bad sky/sec in b2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:10Z 7 1394 236.51 0.0006 63.77 0.0024 75.72 -0.0117 0.999920 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7334,68,36,37,38,39,64 Stays: JL7340,7464,7342,43,44,45,65 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:31Z engcam 1.00000 0 -2313 525 120 56.5 3.3 20 294 - 1.06 08:34Z imager 1.00000 0 -196 -61 62 70.9 2.4 22 302 23-i' 1.22 10:09Z 7 1394 0.99992 790 1957 160 236 63.8 2.3 17 290 - 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:46Z 45 24 14 249 (WSW) 640 - Mostly Cloudy 23:18Z 44 25 27 235 (SW) 640 - Mostly Cloudy 23:50Z 43 25 16 222 (SW) 671 - Mostly Cloudy 00:22Z 44 20 22 250 (WSW) 698 - Mostly Cloudy 00:51Z 42 20 18 261 (W) 641 - Mostly Cloudy 01:23Z 41 21 15 266 (W) 742 - Mostly Cloudy 01:55Z 40 21 22 271 (W) 756 - Mostly Cloudy 02:27Z 40 23 15 293 (WNW) 794 - Mostly Cloudy 02:59Z 39 26 11 297 (WNW) 886 - Mostly Cloudy 03:32Z 39 26 11 271 (W) 1043 - Mostly Cloudy 04:04Z 38 26 13 288 (WNW) 818 - Mostly Cloudy 04:36Z 37 28 10 292 (WNW) 763 - Partly Cloudy 05:08Z 38 26 16 292 (WNW) 709 - Mostly Clear 05:41Z 37 26 14 307 (NW) 625 - Clear 06:13Z 37 27 22 296 (WNW) 599 - Clear 06:45Z 37 26 17 286 (WNW) 662 - Clear 07:26Z 37 26 24 298 (WNW) 756 - Clear 07:58Z 36 27 12 296 (WNW) 722 - Clear 08:30Z 36 27 22 294 (WNW) 769 - Clear 09:02Z 36 27 17 298 (WNW) 793 - Clear 09:34Z 36 27 19 305 (NW) 792 - Clear 10:06Z 36 27 20 307 (NW) 799 - Clear 10:36Z 35 27 17 299 (WNW) 753 - Clear 11:07Z 35 27 15 295 (WNW) 807 - Clear 11:40Z 34 28 13 293 (WNW) 856 - Clear 12:12Z 34 27 14 286 (WNW) 874 - Cirrus ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:45Z Doors Open, Fans On. 05:00Z Enclosure Open. 11:45Z Enclosure Closed, Fans Off Stowed at 30 deg alt, Cartridge 7 installed.
