APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday November 20, 2004 (MJD 53330) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Jurek Krzesinski Mike Harvanek (swing) Visitor: Steve Kent (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakeup then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Shakeup: -------- Imager bias and flats were obtained on November 12 (53322) when we were closed for weather. All tests (biasGen, biasCheck, checkBias, checkFlat) were performed and the details can be found in the log of November 12 (53322). There were some oddities in the bias of some of the astrometric chips and checkFlat yielded a warning/failure. Dimm was shut down last night (53329). Both the telescope and the camera are powered down. We also worked on shake items tonight, e.g., astrom (PR 6227), guiderDarks, and changeLog. Declared plates 1924 and 1936 done. Problems: We had a problem with spectro/DA; see cart 03, plate 1936 in log. Spectrographs went out of spec on our last plate tonight (see the log). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was adjusted. Details are in the Problems section. Windscreen touch during checkout: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-20 22:34:16Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-20 22:34:30Z) I found the SBIG key that dropped through the grate. It is back in the upper right drawer of the toolbox in the upper enclosure. Still don't know the whereabouts of the key that was in the dimm tub though. Night: ------------- 23:35Z We opened the doors and turned on the fans. 00:20Z We closed the doors and turned off the fans because of humidity. We stared working on the the shake list. Jurek did the Astrom (PR 6227) task and created the following notes. ---=== Shake Item: Astrom (PR 6227) ===--- Shake-Item: Astrom part one, telescope inside the enclosure. Meanwhile we've done: --------------------- ---=== Shake Item: guiderDarks ===--- We worked on the guiderDarks using Pete's instructions. The guiderDark commands (e.g., guiderDark 10 -verbose) worked as advertised, and we created the following files in /data/specto/guiderDarks, i.e., dark-10-53330.fits, dark-20-53330.fits, and dark-30-53330.fits. Unfortunately, the loadGuiderDark command did not work. We, nevertheless, produced the following set of instructions for guiderDarks and e-mailed a copy to Pete. GUIDER DARKS ACQUISITION The dark-fits files are stored on sdssHost in: /data/spectro/guiderDarks Plate #666 is not necessary; however, the enclosure's lights should be off. Open a SOP session and issue the following commands. sp1> startDa -tcc sp1> startMon -simple sp1> gcam 5 (aliveness test) sp1> guiderDark 10 -verbose (the 10, of course, is the expTime) The "-verbose" argument will allow one to view the guiderDark process, in the sop window, as it happens. Next, guiderDark 20 and 30 will need to be completed as well: sp1> guiderDark 20 -verbose sp1> guiderDark 30 -verbose To check and see which dark is being used, issue the following commands: sp1> loadCartridge -latest $cart# $plate# Before the next command, turn on the flat-field lamps in mcpMenu. sp1> guiderFlatField (Afterwards, turn off the FF lamps) The file name of the dark being used will be displayed as part of the info in sop window as displayed below: sp1> guiderFlatField Saved 20.0 seconds Image Size is 768 by 512 (should be 768 x 512) loading /data/spectro/guiderDarks/dark-30-53330.fits Typically, the guider will always use the most recent set of guiderDarks. However, the loadGuiderDark command can be used to select any set of darks with the following syntax: loadGuiderDark [expTime] [inDirectory] -mjd -force -verbose When we tried this command, unfortunately, it was not working properly. We discovered a work-around, though. If we RMed the the most recent dark-fits file, sop would then use the most recent one left in the directory. A PR was filed; see PR 6251 for more details. ------------------------------------------- During the last 30-minutes, conditions became less humid, so we open. 05:00Z Enclosure opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. After we mounted the imager and pulled the enclosure, we continued the Shake-Item: Astrom part II: =========================== In the iop window we setup astrom we issued: im> calcStripeParams 82 N -startLambda -20 Error: invalid command name "nodeFromStripeNumber" so the command didn't work here, However it worked from the window we normaly setuped the iop. Then we realized that one can see that error everytime goDrift -bias or goStare was issued (see above): 2004-11-21 01:03:52Z: idReport: problem in calcStripeParams, setting many params to NaN. Error was: invalid command name "nodeFromStripeNumber" Possible explanation: something went wrong with settingup/unsettingup astrom v3_8b, however we didn't see any errors while setting up the astrom. Pete says, he suspects that he didn't build astrom correctly - the instructions on sdsshost were incomplete. He'll look at it before shakedown. Unfortunately, the humidity wanted to play tag, so we had to closed again. 05:28Z Enclosure closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed. To see if the imager works properly after our astrom tests we run bias: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- After we did the on-telescope bias with imager, watcher complained that no gangs were being transfered. We did a "teamster 120 imager -force," but the problem was not fix. We also did a ptvme test but found no errors. Finally, we rebooted the crates, which resolved the problem. 06:40Z Enclosure opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened after humidity decreased again. 06:50Z Cart 06, plate 2043 (segue104). Guide stars on goToField. We did one 900-second exposure but did not get the required 2.0 SN^2 in b1. The exposure was declared bad. By this time, the plate had expired for the night. 07:51Z Cart 04, plate 1924 (chunk99). Guide stars on goToField. Seeing deteriorated and efficiency decreased during the second exposure. Plate was finished in three exposures. 09:37Z Cart 03, plated 1936 (chunk99). Guide stars on goToField. After the first exposure at 10:09Z, the readout was not displayed on the monitors in the control room. However, the files were in /data/spectro/53330 and looked okay with a saoDisplay. There were no complaints from Watcher and a ptvme test showed no errors. Since the files were landing in /data/spectro and SoS was able to reduce them, we decided to take a second exposure and deal with the display problem later. Plate was declared done with three exposures. 11:12Z Cart 01, plate 1954 (chunk99). Guide stars on goToField. After the preCals, we discovered that the spectro collimation/focus was out of spec. And, the humidity was too high again. So, we closed for the night and run endNight - it was happy. Afterwards, we worked on the spectro display problem. We rebooted the spectro crate and did a spectro bias. The bias was properly displayed on the monitors; however, Watcher reported that the server was unhappy, i.e., server is not responding (Last packet: 2004-11-21 12:12:02Z) So next , we restarted the servers. Misc. Watcher messages are in the problem section. endNight finished and was happy ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4971 22:04Z 22:41Z 100 O 100.44 109.84 77 ignore 4976 05:42Z 06:04Z 100 O -144.71 -139.13 51 bias 4977 08:14Z 08:19Z 100 O -106.57 -105.26 23 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 29506, plate -9999 ------- 22:01 29506 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29507, plate 2040 ------- 22:39 29507 10.0 flat collimation 22:41 29508 2.0 arc collimation 22:46 29509 2.1 arc collimation 22:48 29510 2.1 arc collimation 23:05 29511 2.1 arc collimation 23:08 29512 2.1 arc collimation ----- sequence 29513, plate -9999 ------- 23:20 29513 0.0 bias 23:50 29514 0.0 bias 01:14 29515 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29516, plate 2043 ------- 07:10 29516 10.0 flat 07:13 29517 2.0 arc 07:32 29518 900.1 target ----- sequence 29519, plate 1924 ------- 07:55 29519 10.0 flat 07:57 29520 2.0 arc 08:21 29521 1200.1 target 08:51 29522 1500.1 target 09:18 29523 1500.1 target 09:22 29524 10.0 flat 09:24 29525 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29526, plate 1936 ------- 09:39 29526 10.0 flat 09:41 29527 2.0 arc 10:07 29528 1200.1 target 10:15 29529 0.0 bias 10:40 29530 1200.1 target 11:03 29531 1200.1 target 11:07 29532 10.0 flat 11:09 29533 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29534, plate 1954 ------- 11:20 29534 10.0 flat 11:22 29535 2.0 arc 12:18 29536 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:16Z 6 2043 246.21 -0.0011 55.42 -0.0218 92.00 -0.0031 1.000200 08:35Z 4 1924 81.75 -0.0006 53.78 -0.0209 243.30 0.0033 1.000330 09:51Z 3 1936 93.41 -0.0007 60.01 -0.0220 254.79 0.0071 1.000260 11:28Z 1 1954 105.16 -0.0006 67.36 -0.0225 -90.45 0.0048 1.000230 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL 8118 Stays: JL 8119 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:37Z 8 2040 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.2 0.1 14 213 07:15Z 6 2043 1.00020 -1974 -321 150 246 55.5 0.6 15 198 gdr 1.4 08:35Z 4 1924 1.00033 -3258 -1287 240 82 53.7 0.3 22 168 gdr 1.7 09:45Z 3 1936 1.00026 -2566 -819 150 94 58.8 -0.1 21 161 gdr 1.5 11:27Z 1 1954 1.00023 -2270 -593 150 105 67.3 -0.7 20 151 gdr 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:39Z 35 27 13 208 (SSW) 445 - 22:10Z 35 28 12 200 (SSW) 408 - 22:42Z 35 27 12 196 (SSW) 422 - 23:15Z 37 28 14 208 (SSW) 339 - partly cloudy 23:45Z 34 27 12 221 (SW) 288 - partly cloudy 00:09Z 32 27 12 219 (SW) 328 - 00:43Z 31 27 11 208 (SSW) 304 - 01:14Z 31 27 16 208 (SSW) 320 - 01:46Z 31 26 10 195 (SSW) 308 - 02:17Z 31 26 13 212 (SSW) 301 - 02:49Z 32 27 13 215 (SW) 312 - 03:23Z 32 27 4 212 (SSW) 309 - 03:55Z 32 27 10 184 (S) 319 - 04:27Z 33 21 4 199 (SSW) 257 - 04:59Z 31 21 4 182 (S) 259 - 05:31Z 31 23 8 152 (SSE) 298 - 06:04Z 30 24 9 144 (SE) 308 - 06:36Z 32 19 4 157 (SSE) 220 - 07:07Z 33 20 14 180 (S) 169 - clear 07:37Z 33 21 11 177 (S) 169 - 08:08Z 33 22 16 179 (S) 182 - 08:39Z 32 24 19 173 (S) 231 - 09:10Z 32 23 19 160 (SSE) 227 - 09:41Z 31 22 20 155 (SSE) 234 - clear 10:12Z 32 22 21 174 (S) 170 - 10:43Z 31 24 17 168 (SSE) 176 - 11:14Z 31 25 17 151 (SSE) 229 - 11:44Z 31 25 23 152 (SSE) 254 - 12:14Z 32 24 19 151 (SSE) 278 - clear 12:46Z 32 24 21 165 (SSE) 209 - 13:07Z 34 22 24 178 (S) 198 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:35Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:20Z Enclosure doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed 05:00Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 05:28Z Enclosure doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed 06:40Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 11:45Z Enclosure doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed Telescope at 121,30,00 with cart 01 mounted CW at 160lbs; LN2 connected and turned on.
