APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday December 1, 2004 (MJD 53341) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown, night 2. Hopefully we can squeeze in a little science as a bonus. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Shakedown items: ---------------- Software declared current: iop v3_143_0 Watcher v2_30_0 MCP v5_26_0 TPM tpm_v2_46_0 sdssProcedures v1_96 astrom v3_8b NOT declared current. We tested the workaround for the Skippy problem successfully. Spectrographs checked out, and mechanicals behaved. Outside manipulator arm acted up (details in problems section) We are ready for the dark run. Science: ------- One plate finished (plate 2064), good signal on two others. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ------ Afternoon checkout was without problems, although we did not have time to check spectro focus (staff meeting). One oddity: The stop button on the west rail was in. This is behind a closed door in an inaccessible place. Did we have tourists admiring the view there today? Night: ------ We mounted the imager at sunset and set up for imaging / testing Skippy. The plan is to generate an opConfig file with a drift as the first entry set, a stare as the second entry set and check that Skippy runs well using the old astrom dependencies when imaging right after the stare. This is basically the same test that Steph and Pete did when this problem was first discovered, with the exception that instead of copying over an opConfig file with drifting as the first action, we tested the procedure of the proposed workaround: Always do a bias drift first thing if you are going to do imager calibrations or other goStare imager work. The test was successful, so we propose that imager calibration procedures be modified to always start with a bias drift, at least until the astrom problem is fixed. 02:48Z Seeing is too poor to continue imaging. We switch to spectroscopy to check spectrograph health and maybe get a little science done. The drift was changed to flavor ignore...no useful data. 02:57Z Cartridge 7, plate 2064. SEGUE faint. Guide stars at the very edges of the large fibers. We sat on this plate for a long time, and finished it with a total exposre of 5700 s. 05:02Z The Spectro DA crate hung and gave us a lovely blue screen for spectro 1, and we lost the arcs from our post-cal. We had to reboot the crate, do a new bias -init, and did another bias as well to synchronize the frame numbers, then redid the post-cal for plate 2064. Then we restarted the spectro server (actually we had to kill and restart all servers to get the spectro server back). The Watcher error from this event is in the problems section. 05:35Z Cartridge 9, plate 2066, SEGUE faint. After clearing offsets, guide stars on GoToField. We didn't have time to complete this high S/N plate, but managed to get useable signal in 4500s. 07:40Z Problem with outside manipulator arm - see problems section. Existing PR edited. 07:47Z Cartridge 3, plate 2049, SEGUE bright. Guide stars on goToField after clearing offsets. Could not finish this plate, but got useful S/N in one 1500s exposure. We declared test software current while waiting for the next plate to become available. Current versions are listed in the summary section. 09:02Z Cartridge 1, plate 1954, survey plate. Lots of Moon (2.2 Zappas). Guide stars on goToField. sky counts were in the red, so the two exposures we did were declared bad. After that, we tweaked x and lambda positions and spectrograph focus before ending for the night. Focus was off by quite a lot - needed a piston of approx. 5000 for both spectrographs. New actuator positions are at the end of the log. TPM: ---- tpm_v2_46_0 has the fix to the imager dewar scale false alarms. The only TPM alerts we saw tonight were real. They are listed in the problems section. Thanks, Peregrine. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5022 00:58Z 01:15Z 100 O 154.88 159.32 44 bias 5023 01:17Z 02:20Z 82 S 159.38 -184.82 119 ignore "science" in bad seeing.
