Imaging on 90S -162 to -126 mostly in good seeing 22N -64 to 16 all in good seeing ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Checkout went smoothly except for the focus change on sp1. The mechanicals would reboot each time a negative move was requested from the collimator (positive was ok). Jon Brinkmann inspected the power wiring, and didn't find anything obviously wrong, but after checking the wires, the mechanicals started responding properly to mechPiston commands. It took some time to recover collimator positioning on sp1, which delayed opening by about half an hour. See problems section for voluminous output during the event. Night: ------ 01:13Z: start with cart 2 plate 1903. No GSOTGTF, but once we cleared the leftover calib offsets, guidestars appeared. I note that fiber 607 on this plate (STAR_BHB) has significantly different signal (a factor of two) on the different exposures then do most other objects I looked at (which all seem consistent form exposure to exposure) - a variable, perhaps? We got a call for a postCalib midway through, so went ahead to do a midCalib between exposures 4 and 5. We got 5 exposures with a low SN^2 of 27.6. 03:30Z: Conditions good, moon down - we switched to imaging. stripeAxisPositions did not return terribly useful information for SEGUE stripe 90. Certainly this is due to it being a nearly-parked scan, but I thought we should still get a table of positions - we only get one position for time/lambda... ie.: im> stripeAxisPositions 90 03:45 -startLambda -162 -endLambda -126 lambdaStart -162 lambdaEnd -126 -162 -126 minutes lambda az alt rot ------ ------ -- --- --- 0 198 347.8 37.4 72.7 axes ranges: {az {347.757930 347.757930}} {alt {37.354000 37.354000}} {rot {72.663039 72.663039}} Run 5068 is a good bias. Run 5069: 90S ------------- We started with 90S lambda=-167. In ~focus by frame 12 (~lambda=-164.5). Seeing good by frame 16, lambda=-164. Skippy OK at the start. SOK says the seeing went bad from Frame 148 Longitude -144.4 to Frame 219 Longitude -133.8, but it looks pretty marginal to us, so we're calling it all good (especially when combined with last night's possible data). 06:25Z: endDrift at frame 284, lambda=-124 (endScience at -126). The next North scans become available in 30 minutes and we don't want to start a SEGUE scan, so we take advantage of these remaining about 30m to see if we can get some better data on the worst of the seeing excursions from this run. Run 5070: 90S ------------- 06:27Z 90s scanStripe -startLambda -141.5. Data appear good by frame 10, lambda~-140.5. Skippy, focus, seeing all good form the start. 06:48Z: Note the small cloud camera excursions above 6.0 seem to be due to a random-crawling insect. 06:57Z endDrift - frame 52 -lambda~-134 (all good data). Run 5071: 22N ------------- 06:59Z 22N -startLambda -66.5 . Everything is good from the start, although nuErr is -8.3". We reached lambda=-64 (science start) at frame 23. Frame 498 - lambda=7 12:04Z: ended the drift at frame 514, lambda=9.75, but since there's only 30m left and nothing else to do, we start a new drift without any new slews. (I know we should have just continued on without endDrifting, but we made a mistake...) Run 5072: continuation of 22N ----------------------------- 12:06Z: a new goDrift - starting at lambda~94. Again, all data are good, although nuErr started at -9.7". We turned the power off, waited a bit then power it back up. It came back up. We logged into the mechanicals port and tried another negative move. It instantly rebooted. We then tried a positive move. This worked. Jon then proceeded to inspect all the wiring between the power supply and various boards. He didn't find anything obviously loose. We then decided to check the voltages as moves were attempted. Of course, now everything worked fine. So somehow rooting around in the mechanicals box and wiggling wires reestablished whatever connection was lacking. About another hour was spent getting sp1 back in spec and both spectrographs focused.
