APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday February 3, 2005 (MJD 53405) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek Support: Steve Bastian Visitor: Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Good data on 2 plates (2061, 2070). Imaging of 20 S from lambda -67.4 to -21.2 and imaging of 20 N from lambda -40.6 to -4.1 (in 2 pieces). The last 2 hours of the night were lost to humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========== Thermal king was on when I came on site. The enclosure was nicely cold. We checked the collimation (Enclosure =-1.3C) and the spectros were in focus. id1 and ad4 got error while biasing. The errors are in the PROBLEM section. Followed Don H.'s instruction to recover id1-1 and all was well. 23:40Z Telescope doors cracked and fans turned on. Night ====== We opened and observed all night long and then we went to bed. The devil is in the details. It appeared to be photometric at sunset but since the right cartridge was already mounted and the wind was not favorable, we started with spectroscopy to check conditions (seeing, sky). We had the obligatory wind screen touch on opening: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2005-02-04 00:42:20Z sdssmcp): 2005-02-04 00:42:22Z) Plate 2061 (cartridge 4): Segue faint. An fk5 was used to acquire the field in twilight but it was dead center in the fiber. Three exposures were obtained (2700 sec total) before the plate expired but it was not enough to finish it. There were some whopping fiber warnings from SoS. The sky looked hazy and there was some structure in the cloud camera (though the standard deviation was low) so we stayed with spectroscopy. Plate 2070 (cartridge 7): Segue faint. An fk5 was needed to acquire the field. One 900 sec exposure was obtained before we switched to imaging. Run 5137: 20 S. Focus, seeing and pointing all good from frame 15, lambda -67.4. Everything definitely good through frame 324, lambda -21.2. We had light clouds at the end of this run. Most were nowhere near where we were pointing but there may have been some that passed over us. Thus, the data from frames 325 to 357 (lambda -21.2 to -16.2) may or may not be good. Note, however, that we did not notice these clouds until after the run ended so the answer to the "last good frame" question asked by endDrift is not correct. Run 5138: 20 N. Focus, seeing and pointing all good from frame 10, lambda -41.3. Light clouds at the beginning may have affected the first few frames but we were certainly clear by frame 15, lambda -40.6. The thetaf correction started off a bit high (-0.0313 degrees) but we proceeded in the hopes that it would not become much worse. However, by frames 72-75 thetaf had reached the limit of -0.043. We continued on in the hope of reaching 100 frames before thetaf became too large. Here are the thetaf values at 10 frame intervals (or thereabout) after the thetaf limit was reached: Frames 72-75, thetaf = -0.043 degrees 82-85 -0.0449 92-95 -0.0454 99-100 -0.0470 102-105 -0.0481 108 -0.0488 We ended this run at frame 108, lambda -26.6 so that we could make the rotator correction. We believe that all these data are good and are calling them good for now. Run 5139: 20 N. Rotator correction had the wrong sign. Ignore. Steph made another rotator correction and issued another scanStripe. However, the tcc timed out during the scanStripe command (about 08:30Z) and hung her iop session for a while. Mike issued a scanStripe and a goDrift and got run 5140 started. Steph's iop session came back shortly thereafter. Run 5140: 20 N. Everything good from the beginning (frame 9, lambda -30.9) to the end (frame 188, lambda -4.1). Moonrise officially occurred at frame 146, lambda -10.3 but we continued on to the end of the strip because the remaining 6 degrees probably would never have been obtained. We monitored the sky levels of g3 and the sky levels rose only 7 counts after the moonrise. We believe that all these data are good. Run 5141: Bias on the telescope. At this point the humidity became a problem and we closed around 10:40Z and never reopened. Counterweight 2 made a dreadful sound during instrument change. It reached its destination though. Steve Bastian was notified. endNight is running. The heater in the enclosure is on due to the humidity. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
