APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday February 27, 2005 (MJD 53429) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Dan Long Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake sdssProcedures v_98. Pointing model. Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had serious problems with spectro exposure times and suspect the new specMech code is the problem. (We also note we received NO shake request for this change despite it being installed during the bright time and having potentially significant data impact.) We filed 2 PRs on the situation. We obtained a 2.0" pointing model and made some progress in debugging the merged IOP spectro goStare problem. We got a least one good spectro frame. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout ====================== After Jon Brinkmann could find no problem with the spectro coll_motors, I tried another set of dithered flats this afternoon, which were successful. I noticed a problem with the intensity of the spectro flats, i.e., the flux is about one-half as compared to flats from the previous darkrun. The arcs seemed to be okay. I talked with Brinkmann, and he thinks it may be a FF-lamp power supply problem since all four cameras are affected. Jon B does not think this will cause a problem with science acquisition and plans to investigate the problems tomorrow. There were not other problems with the afternoon checkout, except that watcher is still unhappy about the wrong number of pixels with Spectro. Night ====================== Shakedown: the new procedures look great - new DIMM additions and afternoon check and spectro focus hints. I also took some time to trace down the problem we have with the new IOP from last month and a spectro goStare. I discovered part of the problem and reported my findings to Connie. Before opening, we homed/relaxed the mirrors, just for good measures. No problems were found, although in the course of set inst'ing to/fro engCam/spectro, the TCC lost connection to the engCam again. Sigh. (We had earlier problems in the afternoon, but attributed them to operator error - maybe not.) Restarting the Mac brought things back. A short TCC log excerpt from this problem is included in the Problems section. Right before starting the pointing model, the ODH alarm went off. Turns out the cone sensor was reading 19.9, not >=20.0. Sounds like it needs adjusting. We unplugged it and filed a PR. The 72-point model ended up with an RMS=2.0"; ~7" when fit against the old model. The 25-point check resulted in a 3.4" fit to the new model. The new model was implemented. 07:09Z Having accomplished our shake item and pointing model, we decided to try spectroscopy. First up: cart 7 plate 2020. GSOTGTF AND the guider worked right away, too. :> The initial preCalib came up out of spec, so we decided to do a proper recollimation. The moon was just WAY too bright for any good data on this plate, so we tried cart 2 plate 2019, declaring both 2020 exposures bad. GSOTGTF. (Ahem, maybe not true - see the exposure time discussion below. But moonlight aside, we did not obtain more than 2.0 S/N^2 on each exposure.) At this point, we noticed ALL our science exposures and many of our arc exposures had an exposure time in SoS, and the log summary, and the headers of 0.0s! (This may explain the low flat field fluxes, too.) During exposure 30996, Dan noted the SOPGUI countdown was stopped at ~500s while the data were being read out. Checking the times of his commands, this is approximately consistent with the data being read out at the time of his resumeStare. Sue enough, he header says the Dark Time is 1069s, not 1500s and not 1200s. We apofixed this exposure to 1500s, but it certainly is not. We don't really know what the exposure time is. Can this exposure be kept? (We filed a PR on this exposure.) We suspect these problems are due to the new specMech code (since this is the only thing that changed this dark run) and suggest the old one be restored tomorrow. (We filed a PR on this, too.) The next exposure was apofixed to 1500 and this looks like it is at least approximately correct. We closed at 10:00Z due to high humidity and gathering frost. When we came back from closing, my landru X-session had bailed and I was returned to the login prompt. Sigh. We did not re-open. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5167 22:01Z 22:19Z 100 O -162.64 -158.19 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y, but oops- not science exposures UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30969, plate -9999 ------- 21:59 30969 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30970, plate 2072 ------- 22:28 30970 10.0 flat 22:31 30971 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30972, plate -9999 ------- 22:41 30972 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30973, plate 2072 ------- 23:03 30973 10.0 flat 23:07 30974 10.0 flat 23:11 30975 10.0 flat 23:15 30976 10.0 flat 23:18 30977 10.0 flat 23:22 30978 10.0 flat 23:26 30979 10.0 flat 23:30 30980 2.0 arc 23:33 30981 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30982, plate -9999 ------- 05:07 30982 0.0 bias 05:16 30983 0.0 bias 06:03 30984 0.0 bias BEGIN REAL DATA ----- sequence 30985, plate 2020 ------- 07:19 30985 10.0 flat 07:21 30986 2.0 arc 07:29 30987 0.0 arc XXX Bad time, but not changed since /bad 07:32 30988 0.0 arc XXX 07:46 30989 10.0 flat 07:49 30990 2.0 arc 08:07 30991 0.0 target XXX - declared bad - low S/N 08:25 30992 0.0 target XXX - declared bad - low S/N ----- sequence 30993, plate 2019 ------- 08:38 30993 10.0 flat 08:40 30994 2.0 arc 09:03 30995 0.0 target XXX should be 1200s, but declared bad 09:23 30996 0.0 target XXX apofixed to 1500s ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:15Z 7 2020 100.83 -0.0030 66.17 0.0014 -95.23 -0.0050 1.000130 08:47Z 2 2019 266.02 -0.0022 69.84 -0.0006 98.85 0.0150 1.000020 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8336 Stays: JL8337 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:15Z 7 2020 1.00013 -1284 226 150 101 66.1 -3.4 5 351 gdr 1.3" 08:47Z 2 2019 1.00002 -198 1118 150 266 69.8 -3.6 8 340 gdr 1.2" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:51Z 27 18 16 327 (NNW) 139 - 22:23Z 27 16 26 321 (NW) 131 - 22:56Z 28 15 11 332 (NNW) 150 - 23:28Z 27 17 12 330 (NNW) 128 - 00:01Z 26 19 5 38 (NE) 301 - 00:33Z 27 18 15 344 (NNW) 196 - 01:05Z 26 17 10 319 (NW) 124 - 01:37Z 26 17 1 342 (NNW) 161 - 02:14Z 26 17 5 336 (NNW) 217 - 02:46Z 26 18 10 326 (NW) 180 - 03:22Z 26 17 6 16 (NNE) 195 - 03:58Z 26 17 2 0 (N) 202 - 04:31Z 26 17 3 357 (NNW) 183 - 05:03Z 25 18 5 32 (NNE) 227 - 05:35Z 26 17 7 336 (NNW) 242 - 06:07Z 25 16 8 348 (NNW) 229 - 06:40Z 25 17 8 4 (N) 260 - 07:12Z 25 17 4 4 (N) 233 - 07:48Z 25 19 5 6 (N) 277 - 08:20Z 25 18 3 351 (NNW) 280 - 08:52Z 25 18 9 315 (NW) 313 - 09:25Z 25 19 9 306 (NW) 299 - 10:29Z 24 19 10 332 (NNW) 275 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Fans On/Doors open: 02:00Z Opened: ~03:45Z Closed: 10:00Z - high humidity cart 2 plate 2019 mounted ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_0a Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_98 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5760 0.5770 Axial B 0.5880 0.5880 Axial C 0.9440 0.9460 Trans D -8.1970 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0330 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5951 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
