APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 25, 2005 (MJD 53455) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: John Barentine "Stellar" phone support: Steph Snedden The ET Team: Jian Ge (UF) Julian Van Eyken (UF) Bo Zhao (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloudy all night long with occasional snow flurries. Never opened. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Experienced trouble with both the MCP and the spectro guider today during checkout (see Problems section) Night ----- The sky was overcast for nearly the entire night. We had snow flurries several times throughout the night that left a light dusting of snow on the ground. We never considered opening. endNight was run on the cloudy night tapes and rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): n/a QA Procedures Done (y/n): n/a UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31497, plate -9999 ------- 00:28 31497 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:05Z 32 19 21 266 (W) 542 - MstlyCldy 00:36Z 32 20 21 265 (W) 473 - MstlyCldy 01:08Z 32 21 23 249 (WSW) 526 - Overcast 01:38Z 32 21 21 260 (W) 535 - Overcast 02:08Z 31 21 25 258 (WSW) 535 - Overcast 02:40Z 31 21 24 254 (WSW) 510 - Overcast 03:10Z 31 21 20 250 (WSW) 542 - Overcast 03:40Z 31 20 15 271 (W) 918 - Overcast 04:11Z 30 20 24 271 (W) 1572 - Overcast 04:41Z 30 18 19 268 (W) 1047 - Overcast 05:11Z 30 18 11 268 (W) 806 - Overcast 05:41Z 29 19 19 291 (WNW) 772 - Overcast 06:13Z 27 21 16 304 (NW) 552 - Overcast 06:44Z 28 20 21 292 (WNW) 514 - Overcast 07:18Z 27 21 15 279 (W) 452 - Overcast 07:49Z 26 22 19 269 (W) 400 - Overcast 08:21Z 26 22 22 255 (WSW) 426 - Overcast 08:53Z 25 22 23 267 (W) 393 - Overcast 09:25Z 25 21 21 262 (W) 394 - Overcast 09:57Z 25 18 26 265 (W) 401 - Overcast 10:30Z 23 16 21 264 (W) 375 - MstlyCldy 11:02Z 22 18 24 268 (W) 384 - Overcast 11:34Z 21 20 25 289 (WNW) 998 - Overcast 12:05Z 19 18 17 279 (W) 268 - MstlyCldy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 4 (Plate 8004) mounted Sopectro autofill reconnected Counterweights at 296 No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 12:20Z Imager: 213lbs 22psi Spectro: 107lbs 25psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_143_0a Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_98 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5840 0.5770 Axial B 0.5940 0.5880 Axial C 0.9470 0.9460 Trans D -8.1900 -8.1960 Lateral E 9.8806 10.0330 Lateral F 11.4554 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650. Worked like a charm thereafter. Guider Misbehavior During Checkout ---------------------------------- Before the MCP went down in flames, I checked out the guider as usual with no trouble. Once the MCP went wonky, however, I tried rebooting sdsshost because of complaints about the servers not starting properly. This seems to have put the guider in an unhappy state; later attempts at gcam doreads gave errors like the following in the TCC: 0 0 F GCamReply="could not open file: guider:gimg0012.fits; error: No Error 0 5 F Text="doread failed" I followed the instructions in folklore about rebooting the host Mac. Seemed to work fine after that. Steph thought that we still had to set the correct camera driver after a reboot, but the camera seemed to come back on its own just fine with the default.
