APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday May 27, 2006 (MJD 53883) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Olena Malanushenko Shannon Watters ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A marginally non-photometric night throughout. Finished four plates (1778, 1793, 1717 and 2536) and obtained partial signal on one more (2544). We think 2536 is done, according to SEGUE rules, but are highly uncertain on account of multiple SoS warnings and saturated spectra -- can someone at FNAL (Brian?) have a look and tell us if this one is okay? We're hesitant to unplug this one without some official feedback. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No checkout issues to report. The manipulator arm problem from yesterday has been fixed. Spectro focus was checked and left at +14 deg C. Night ----- Mostly clear at sunset but some high, thin cirrus assured that it would not be photometric to start out with. Began ventilation at 02:00Z. airTemp = +13.8 deg C, humidity 24%, winds out of the WSW at 17-25MPH. There was a dust spike around 00:00Z up to a total of about 9000 counts, but it quickly subsided. By the time we opened at 02:10Z the dust had retreated to 2500. 02:40Z Cart 6 Plate 1778 (tile 1283, chink 92). No GSOGTF. Nor an kf5InFiber number 10. It took some hunting around to find a glow, which was found at A=-10, followed by a D=+5 to rough-center. Best focus at about +150, seeing >1 arcsec consistently. The QA on this plate went as normal until apoplotsky; there's a large feature around 5900A that is so bright that it goes negative in expnum 39462. It's not an auroral line since there's no solar activity of note. Done in three exposures of 2 x 900 s and 1 x 1200 s. 04:30Z Cart 9 Plate 1793 (tile 1312, chunk94). No GSOGTF, but we got a glow with fk5InFiber number 10. Did an offset A=-5 to rough-center. After preCalibs and starting the guider, we had a failure in the startGuider command: "Error: can't read "guiderInfo(monitoring)": no such element in array". gcam inits failed. We rebooted the guider Mac with the same symptom, then did the new gTF recommended in folklore with the -gflat option. That did the trick. Sky levels seemed back to normal in these exposures; no trace of the huge excess at 5900A -- maybe an LED became uncovered in the wind? We did 3 x 900 s exposures and the SoS-requested postCalib. 06:15Z While down at the telescope for instChange, Shannon and I both very faintly smelled what seemed like wood smoke in the air. It was not as intense near the ops building, but was definitely noticeable at the 2.5m. We looked around to the west and south, the wind direction, for fire but saw none. We'll keep an eye, er... nose on it. We note from a little Web research that the 9,500-acre Adobe Fire is burning near Animas, to our southwest, and is only 40% contained. This may be the source of the smoke. 06:20Z Cart 4 Plate 1717 (tile 1226, chunk87). We began this plate with total previous (S/N)^2 of 3.6 on this plate. No GSOGTF, but we found an fk5InFiber number 10. To center we had to do an additional offset of A=-3, D=+3. Done with previous signal in 1 x 1100 s and 2 x 900 s exposures. 07:30Z Cart 3 Plate 2536 (tile 8206, segue146). Once again, no GSOGTF, but we found the fk5 star with an offset of A=-8. There are LOTS of bright objects on this plate, and consequently we got all kinds of SoS warnings and errors (whopping fibers, bad sky residuals, scattered light max)... and then this: sdR-r2-00039478.fit: ABORT: Reject science: 555 saturated rows sdR-r2-00039478.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce science exposure SoS did indeed reduce the exposure, and even called it "excellent". The low red (S/N)^2 for these exposures was less than 2.0 but we kept them anyway since they did technically meet the requirements for SEGUE bright plates. It took us 4 x 900 to get enough signal to (S/N)^2 > 15 in the blue channels. 09:05Z Cart 8 Plate 2544 (tile 8213, seguefaint147). GSOGTF.... hooray! We are puzzled as to the SoS results from the first exposure (totals 4.3, 3.5, 0.8 and 0.5, respectively, for b1, r1, b2 and r2) We forgot to start the guider at the beginning of this exposure but caught the oversight later. Still, it doesn't seem to explain why the disparity exists between sp1 and sp2. In case this exposure turns out to be useful after all, we're not marking it "bad". Three exposures of 1200 s each here took us right up to the start of twilight. Closed for the night at 10:35Z. endNight seemed pretty happy with this evening's enterprise. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6179 23:39Z 23:57Z 100 O -50.52 -46.09 44 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 39456, plate 1778 ------- 00:05 39456 10.0 flat 00:08 39457 2.0 arc ----- sequence 39458, plate -9999 ------- 00:19 39458 0.0 bias ----- sequence 39459, plate 1778 ------- 19.4 17.6 20.0 15.3 DONE 03:21 39459 10.0 flat 03:24 39460 2.0 arc 03:42 39461 900.1 target 04:00 39462 900.1 target 04:23 39463 1200.1 target ----- sequence 39464, plate 1793 ------- 04:46 39464 10.0 flat 04:48 39465 2.0 arc ----- sequence 39464, plate 1793 ------- 16.8 15.9 17.0 14.8 DONE 05:24 39466 900.1 target 05:43 39467 900.1 target 06:02 39468 1000.1 target 06:06 39469 10.0 flat 06:08 39470 2.0 arc ----- sequence 39471, plate 1717 ------- 16.1 11.8 18.0 13.7 DONE w/ 06:24 39471 10.0 flat previous signal 06:26 39472 2.0 arc 06:49 39473 1100.1 target 07:08 39474 900.1 target 07:26 39475 900.1 target ----- sequence 39476, plate 2536 ------- 16.5 -- 16.9 -- 07:40 39476 10.0 flat (SoS did not reduce the 07:42 39477 2.0 arc r1 and r2 obs so we have 08:02 39478 900.1 target no signal to report here) 08:20 39479 900.1 target 08:38 39480 900.1 target 09:01 39481 900.1 target ----- sequence 39482, plate 2544 ------- 20.0 14.2 14.0 10.6 09:11 39482 10.0 flat 09:13 39483 2.0 arc 09:36 39484 1200.1 target 09:59 39485 1200.1 target 10:22 39486 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:50Z 6 1778 58.35 -0.0007 59.05 0.0029 227.33 -0.0139 1.000030 05:13Z 9 1793 -47.26 -0.0028 59.07 0.0015 141.09 -0.0001 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:50Z 6 1778 1.00003 -296 760 -150 58 59.1 13.1 15 250 -- 1.5 03:08Z 6 1778 1.00003 -296 702 -200 52 62.1 13.6 16 253 -- 1.2 05:13Z 9 1793 1.00010 -988 187 -150 -47 59.0 12.7 21 264 -- 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:48Z 65 24 18 224 (SW) 7266 - Clear 00:20Z 62 24 21 231 (SW) 5950 - Clear 00:52Z 60 23 10 277 (W) 4464 - Clear 01:24Z 60 23 15 259 (W) 3307 - Clear 01:56Z 57 20 12 252 (WSW) 2691 - Clear 02:29Z 56 21 15 256 (WSW) 2737 - Clear 03:01Z 56 21 18 240 (WSW) 2745 - Clear 03:32Z 55 21 17 239 (WSW) 3484 - Clear 04:05Z 55 20 18 255 (WSW) 3441 - Clear 04:36Z 55 20 16 256 (WSW) 2642 - Clear 05:07Z 55 19 13 265 (W) 2636 - Clear 05:37Z 54 19 19 265 (W) 3142 - Clear 06:08Z 53 19 24 270 (W) 2962 - Clear 06:38Z 53 20 15 258 (WSW) 2652 - Clear 07:10Z 52 20 9 287 (WNW) 2602 - Clear 07:42Z 51 20 17 273 (W) 2462 - Clear 08:12Z 50 21 21 295 (WNW) 2286 - Clear 08:42Z 49 22 14 280 (W) 2573 - Clear 09:13Z 48 22 16 284 (WNW) 2289 - Clear 09:44Z 48 22 14 257 (WSW) 2414 - Clear 10:16Z 47 24 16 264 (W) 2456 - Clear 10:48Z 46 26 10 260 (W) 3199 - Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:00Z Fans and blowers on, louvers open, west door cracked, east door open 02:10Z Enclosure off 10:--Z Enclosure on, foors and louvers closed, fans off Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 8 (Plate 2544) mounted Counterweights at 260 Spectro autofill reconnected No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 10:52Z Spectro: 158lbs 23psi Imager: 208lbs 21psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_23_0 Watcher: v2_34_0 MCP: v6_3_2 TPM: tpm_v3_3_0 AstroDa: v15_12 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_16 SoS: v5_1_0 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A -5.8510 -5.8440 Axial B -5.6830 -5.6770 Axial C 0.9400 0.9420 Trans D -9.9970 -9.9940 Lateral E 10.3632 10.3759 Lateral F 11.9380 11.9380 GALILS Commanded: 4700. -2450. 3000. -7800. 3300. 3000.
