APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 26, 2008 (MJD 54705) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Kaike Pan Support: Steph Snedden French Leger Paul Harding (new guider) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Mirrors home/relax procedure was successful performed. Fiducial tables were created and compared with previous ones, ready to install. Some Spectro monthly checkout task: Position fibers and spectra on CCD, focus the spectro collimation mirrors. Two minor problems: 1. Somehow, the counts of motor A of SP2 jumped by -13000 during collimation process (see log). 2. Status of Neon lamps: The system status cartoon showed that two neon lamps are intermittent on/off when they were turned on. Visually check confirmed they are actually on (see log). The lock ring of spectro b1 was left unlocked per French's request. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- ntp-check, imager bias were okay. Telescope balance was checked. M2 problem that we had last night was resolved. Thanks to day crew's hard working: They worked till 6:00 PM. Night: ------ 01:45Z started ventilation. 02:00Z: home/relax mirrors. The process went smoothly. The position errors for the primary ranged from -50 to 50 steps, and -140 to 50 for the secondary. 03:00Z: Lost phone line connections to outside. 03:10Z: Stop ventilation due to high humidity. 03:25z: started spectro monthly checked out procedure. We had troubles in moving collimator. We Elena tried to move collimator of SP2, we got the error message: motor a: Motor a failed to reach destination. Original motor status: {a -12933} {b -25} {c 7} Best guess current motor status: {a -14911} {b -25} {c 7} Try to do mechCollStatus for the current motor positions. Both Elena and Kaike tried a few times, all attempts failed. It seems that motor A of SP2 got stuck near -15 K. It got there when Elena tried to move 1000 from 96, for some reason, the motor ended at about -14800. When we tried to move it in positive direction, We could not move it passing -11500. It seems that it can move to -11500 (from -15000) without much trouble. But it will bounce back to -15000, even when a small step movement, 200, was requested at about -11500. We tested motor B and C of SP2, and all motors of SP1, they work fine. After some tests, we find out that -11500 is the limit of the motor A of SP2. Somehow, the count reading of the motor jumped by about -13000 counts. During the collimation process, we noticed that the system status cartoon showed that the neno lamp #2, and 4 (from the left to right) sometimes went off for about 3-5 second, then back on. But our visually checked all lamps were always on during the process. French helped us to move lock ring of b1, and told us to leave the lock ring unlocked, he will worked on it to make it easy to move. 10:20Z we had time for the spare plug spectro test. However, it was raining, we could get cartridges wet if you swap cartridges. So we decided not to do the test till rain stopping. 11:20 Z endNight rejoice. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7651 00:36Z 01:10Z 100 O 53.89 62.24 70 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 54337, plate 3106 ------- 03:30 54337 10.0 flat 07:29 54338 10.0 flat 07:32 54339 2.0 arc 07:40 54340 10.0 flat 07:46 54341 10.0 flat 07:52 54342 10.0 flat 08:06 54343 2.0 arc 08:14 54344 2.0 arc 08:21 54345 2.0 arc 08:29 54346 2.0 arc 08:34 54347 2.0 arc 08:46 54348 2.0 arc 09:04 54349 2.0 arc 09:09 54350 3.0 arc 09:12 54351 2.0 arc 09:53 54352 3.0 arc 09:56 54353 3.0 arc 10:44 54354 2.0 arc 10:46 54355 2.0 arc 10:59 54356 10.0 flat 11:02 54357 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 01:12Z 57 45 4 187 (S) 742 - 01:44Z 57 46 5 171 (S) 878 - 02:16Z 58 43 7 168 (SSE) 798 - 02:48Z 58 43 9 170 (S) 826 - 03:21Z 53 51 7 262 (W) 1147 - 03:51Z 51 53 7 188 (S) 2071 - 04:23Z 51 52 1 211 (SSW) 2481 - 04:53Z 51 52 4 258 (WSW) 2974 - 05:25Z 51 52 4 260 (W) 4292 - 05:57Z 51 52 6 220 (SW) 3933 - 06:29Z 51 52 0 233 (SW) 2318 - 07:02Z 50 51 2 25 (NNE) 2201 - 07:34Z 51 50 5 136 (SE) 1599 - 08:06Z 53 48 5 180 (S) 1343 - 08:38Z 53 48 0 260 (W) 1193 - 09:10Z 53 47 2 204 (SSW) 873 - 09:42Z 53 48 1 211 (SSW) 1033 - 10:13Z 53 47 2 217 (SW) 882 - 10:44Z 53 48 1 240 (WSW) 1036 - 11:15Z 52 49 2 262 (W) 1079 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:45 Z - Began ventilation.
