APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 23, 2008 (MJD 54733) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS/SEGUE Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We noticed strange behavior with the 180L imager dewar. It was essentially as if it were leaking at 25 lbs./hr. for a few hours. See the log entry at 08:31Z describing the behavior. SEGUE ----- Added signal to cartridge 8, 3138. Observed cartridge 7, 3121. Cartridge 7 was observed under photometric skies with excellent seeing (often 1.1" and sometimes <1.0") and yet the summed (S/N)^2 for 10500 seconds worth of observations is only: (S/N)^2 = 15.7 20.6 19.3 22.0 BOSS Imaging ------------ Imaged the long crossing scan from (RA,DEC) = (320,-20) to (320,+25). We began imaging at (320,-20) at LMST = 314 degrees. Seeing was below 1.5" most of the time and never exceeded 1.75". Observed 72 N from lambda = 164 to 176, including ramps, with seeing between 1.1" - 1.3" throughout the entire drift. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- All systems checked and working properly. Restarted the servers and they came back alive and well. sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu % df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 114G 21G 85% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 720G 151G 83% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 655G 738G 48% /files Spectrographs set for ~10C (sp1) and ~9C (sp2). Collimate numbers in Problems section. 00:30Z - Began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans on. Night: ----- 01:03Z - Sunset. 01:04Z - Enclosure off. We opened to partly cloudy conditions. We wanted to test the twilight sky exposures, so we pointed at a patch of clear sky (verified on the cloud camera with the 2.5m pointing icon) and tried the following: 01:47Z - 60 seconds. Way too faint. 01:49Z - Pre-Calibs. 01:55Z - 900 seconds. This exposure time was still too short for the sky brightness at this time. The brightest fibers were a few hundred counts above background levels. Even though twilight didn't end until 02:20Z, it looks like this twilight sky test will have to be done very nearly after sunset. Anyway, we figured we'd get a feel for it and try to characterize better exactly when this test can be performed during twilight. Cartridge 8, 3138, segue ************************ 02:15Z - gotoField. Guide stars found on gotoField. Used 2 `gotoField -gflat' commands to center the fiber masks in SAOImage. 02:20Z - Pre-Calibs. End twilight. 02:26Z - Science. 1064 seconds. (S/N)^2 = 3.4 2.3 3.1 3.1 We ended the previous exposure prematurely (it was originally 1500 seconds) since conditions had become photometric and dark. Seeing estimates from the guide stars were around 1.1", so we decided to try for the long crossing scan. 02:50Z - Removed cartridge 8 and the corrector. 02:55Z - Mounted imager. Counterweights adjusted to 730. Telescope balance was checked and looked fine. Long Crossing Scan ****************** 03:09Z - On-telescope bias. Run 7697. 03:24Z - We had an error in TCC when we issued the following track command: track 320.0 -20.0 fk5 /scanvelocity=(0,0.0041780722) TCC did not like the format and complained of a spelling error. We added a comma between the RA and DEC and the following command worked normally: track 320.0,-20.0 fk5 /scanvelocity=(0,0.0041780722) After the telescope slewed to (RA,DEC) = (320.0,-20.0), we issued the `goDrift' command and answered the questions as instructed and received the same error from IOP described in the 2.5m night log from 54715: "can't read stipe: no such variable." We called Steph and she instructed us to go to a familiar stripe/stip such as 82 N, issue the `goDrift' from there, and then reissue the `track' command above, allowing the telescope to scan while slewing to the desired field. 03:28Z - `scanStripe 82 N 106' was issued and when we were tracking and subsequently issued the `goDrift' command and instructed IOP that the stripe/stip we wanted for this `goDrift' was 100,O, it replied that this didn't match what it knew (82,N), but we were able to answer "yes" to "Continue anyway?" and data taking began normally. 03:30Z - Run 7698. Began data taking at 82 N. LMST = 312 degrees. Once we could see stars on the monitors we started a focus loop and then we issued the track command above and slewed to (RA,DEC) = (320.0,-20.0). Once we were tracking on the long crossing field, the focus settled and was good from frame 18. 03:45Z - Reissued the `track' command above now that we're in focus so that we could start at (RA,DEC) = (320.0,-20.0) in focus. LMST = 314 degrees. Frame 26 is the first frame after the slew back to the field where we were tracking on the field and there were no streamers on the monitors due to stars moving across the field during the slew. 06:45Z - `endDrift'. Last frame was 325. Ended at DEC = +25.1 degrees. The seeing for run 7698 was very often below 1.5" (~225-250 frames worth) and sometimes higher, but never exceeded 1.75". We had 65 minutes before moon rise, so we decided to try to squeeze in 72 N between lamda = 166 to lambda = 174. 72 N **** 06:45Z - `scanStripe 72 N 163'. Altitude = 75.5 degrees. 06:47Z - `goDrift'. (S/N)^2 = 2.0 3.0 2.5 2.9 08:31Z - We noticed that the 180L imager dewar weight had been steadily decreasing since 06:00Z (imager dewar plot shows the same trend still continuing as of 08:31Z) at a rate of about 25 lbs./hr. It looks as though somewhere about 05:30Z, while we were imaging the long crossing scan, the imager called for a refill of the 10L dewars and the 180L dewar weight dropped by ~50 lbs. after the fill, which would be normal. Immediately after the 10L dewars were filled (about 06:00Z), the 180L imager dewar weight steadily declined at the 25 lbs./hr. rate. We issued a `cc stopFillSeq' and `cc startFillSeq' because we figured perhaps the 10L dewars didn't let the 180L dewar know it could stop and in the meantime LN2 was leaking since it wouldn't fill the already-full 10L dewars. After issuing the `stop' and `start' the 180L dewar weight no longer continued to continually drop. It was steady throughout the rest of the night. 08:43Z - Science. 1800s.
