APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday September 4, 2009 (MJD 55079) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko Dmitry Bizyaev Paul Harding (guider team) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- The plan is to try an evening Marvels cartridge, if we can observe it. Then to try BOSS cartridge with guider and see if it guides. When we see that it does not guide, Paul will debug guider for boss cartridges. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Mounted MArvels survey plate (cart. 9) and tried to observe. Discovered a problem with information of plugging in database, the trouble cannot be fixed quickly in the night. Mounted BOSS carts. 10 and 11, and Marvels cart. 1 and acquired guide stars into field attempting to fix problems with guider. It looks like this night marks a step back in setting up the guider. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Agternppn: ----------- Mike Carr is still swapping cables for boss. Telescope is not released yet. 01:00Z ventilation started, doors and louvers opened 01:10Z Marvels Th-Ar lamp is turned on. Night: ------ Mike released telescope. 01:50Z telescope opened. Cart. 9 is mounted, Marvels survey plate. We are going to test it. Attempt to go to field failed: some actors cannot be connected (with existing instruction). Paul took a look and updated startup troubleshooting sequence (for us). Telescope can be started, but Mike and Nathaly asked Paul to give them 20 min more to check cables on BOSS spectrograph. After this we tried to go to field. Again, command failed with error: Failed to find cartridge 9 labelled active in the plateDB" 03:01:09 .hub 0 cmds d CmdDone=114937 03:01:09 APO.dmbiz 30 guider f text="Failed to lookup plate corresponding to 9/A" Paul calls Craig Loomis and tries to fix the problem. 03:55Z cart 10 is mounted We successfully load cartridge, slew to field, and take flats, and found a star (out of focus) in the biggest fiber, and focused (appropriate focus = 550 !). Whwn the guider was started, it took 1 exposure, and dropped off the loop (or even disceonnected from hub). Paul is debugging, called to Craig. To debug, cart. 1 is needed to be mounted. 05:15Z cart. 1 is mounted Very strange: now guider works, but does not guide: it sends telescope to a wrong direction, out of stars. Paul sees that comands that apply offsets to stellar position in guider fibers are 90 degrees different from previous nights (when the guider worked). Paul rolled back to STUI-0.2 on his computer, but the guiding behaves the same way there. We checked and ensured that the instrument in tcc is in "spectro" mode. 09:10Z guider is still working not as yesterday. Az-Alt axes look swapped. We filled dewars, and then mounted BOSS cart. 11. 09:20Z noticed that "boss" commands do not work in STUI. Relaunched BOSS ICC process at boss-icc. Cameras temperature is OK. 10:20Z we tried to go to cart. 11 plate 3523. No stars appeared in the fibers. REalized that this cartridge had been replugged and remapped with this plate. Tried to load the plate into the database and to make the plate active (it compalined that it is not), however there were many errors. Following this, may be it is unrelated, we cannot more talk to the platedbActor, neither reconnect, now restart it. Also we have troubles withthe guider actor, we cannot get multiple exposures. We give up at this moment. Paul does not need telescope on sky anymore. 11:05Z telescope closed. 11:10Z endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- 8022 00:12Z 00:31Z 100 O 56.48 61.21 46 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- 00:39Z 59 37 8 79 (E) 1118 - 00:55Z 57 39 10 86 (E) 1366 - 01:27Z 56 40 17 71 (ENE) 1313 - some clouds 01:59Z 55 41 14 88 (E) 1485 - '' 02:31Z 54 41 18 76 (ENE) 1527 - '' 03:04Z 53 42 19 73 (ENE) 1743 - '' 03:36Z 53 42 11 77 (ENE) 1966 - '' 04:08Z 52 42 6 85 (E) 1838 - '' 04:40Z 51 43 2 144 (SE) 1809 - '' 05:12Z 52 43 4 287 (WNW) 1779 - '' 05:44Z 52 43 0 228 (SW) 1784 - '' 06:17Z 51 43 4 108 (ESE) 1756 - '' 06:49Z 50 43 4 182 (S) 1859 - '' 07:21Z 50 43 6 91 (E) 2026 - '' 07:53Z 50 43 16 72 (ENE) 2037 - '' 08:25Z 51 43 24 49 (NE) 2060 - '' 08:58Z 51 42 18 45 (NE) 1937 - '' 09:30Z 51 41 20 60 (ENE) 1660 - 10:02Z 50 42 15 56 (NE) 1731 - 10:34Z 50 43 18 65 (ENE) 1831 - 11:06Z 50 42 14 64 (ENE) 1783 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z - Began ventilation.
