APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 13, 2009 (MJD 55149) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon) Support: Russell Owen (new version of STUI) Fritz Stauffer (installed STUI) Craig Loomis (guider simulations) Natalie Roe (sp1 coma investigation) David Schlegel (sp1 coma investigation) Dan Long (sp1 coma investigation) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We stayed closed all night due to clouds and high humidity. We completed the 'collimation coma' test on both spectrographs, as requested from the BOSS team (103473-103508 for sp1, and 103510-103579 for sp2). Took only a little more than 25 trips to the telescope to test sp2. There is no change in the coma in sp1 but maybe there is a hint of change in the coma from one limit of the collimator to the other in sp2, but we are definitely not sure. Please take a look at the data. We reset the optics for sp2 so that the collimator mechanicals are in the middle of the range of limits, but we left the sp1 mechanicals near the lower limit just in case there are more tests to be done tomorrow. The spectrograph pressure gauge that is right next to the chiller fans in the lower floor of the enclosure is reading almost zero, when it's nominal value should be ~22psi. The spectro dewer will need to be swapped soon. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Natalie and Dan Long were investigating the coma issue on sp1 during the day. We took over for Dan. Basically, we moved the r1 focus ring over a wide range, took Hartmanns on the sparse-plugged plate, refocussed with the collimator mirror and the b1 ring and took Hartmann's again to check focus. David will have the detailed analysis and all the different focus ring positions, but the sense of the coma stayed the same at every position we set r1, and did not appear to change much. Keeping the enclosure dark for these tests delayed afternoon checkout. Since it was cloudy, the delay was not a problem. Lots of clouds. 02:11Z - Completed telescope checkout. 03:48Z - Force filled the spectrographs. Natalie wanted us to complete a similar test as what they did in the afternoon, but this time change the spectrograph 2 rings. To do this, we need to move the telescope up to a higher altitude in order to read r2. 04:06Z - Bias 103507. 04:35Z - Hartmanns (4 seconds) at current position - r1: 100, b1: 140, r2: - 0, b2: - 36. 103508-09. motorPosition=549,477,529,36633,36591,36660 Made sure to warm up the lamps before starting. 04:41Z - Hartmanns 20 seconds 103510-11. 04:50Z - Focused collimators according to 103510. motorPosition=549,477,529,38088,38046,38098 04:52Z - Hartmanns. 103512-13. 05:07Z - Adjusted b2 camera by -9 degrees according to hartmann 103512. 05:07Z - Hartmanns. 103514-15. Very odd collimate results. The locking ring on the red camera was not tighened down enough. It alowed the ring to move freely during the test. 06:28Z - Another attempt. Hartmanns 103526-27. 06:38Z - Moved r2 and b2 by -5 degrees because we do not want to hit the limit. Hartmanns 103528-29. 06:46Z - Moved r1 by +2000 steps. We are basically at the upper limit.
