APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday May 8, 2010 (MJD 55325) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Kaike Pan Craig Loomis (online) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first hour was lost to clouds. We observed and finished four plates: cart 11, plate 4005, DONE cart 12, plate 4026, DONE cart 17, plate 3923, DONE cart 16, plate 3935, not done. We confirmed that Dan's work on R2 fixed light leakage on the camera that was reported a few days ago. Some hartmann exposures were taken in aiming to see if BOSS spectro collimation has a telescope position dependence. If there is one, it would be smaller than 0.10 pix, and scatter itself is about 0.10 pixel. We warmed up HgCd and Ne lamps when we slew the telescope to instrument change, and verified that lamps were not turned off at any point till arc were taken (with gotoField). This give lamps 7+ minutes warming up. But we still got SoS3 warning, Cd I 3610 line missing. We checked with traceset2xy, and found the line is reasonable strong, at 3500+ counts. After having encosure back on, we run a test on the warning up: with arc lamps stay on, take a sequence of arc. Strength of Cd I 3610 line increases with warming-up time up to 14 minutes (see log for details). One small screw was found at southwest pinch point in lower enclosure (see log body of afternoon section). Plate 3935 accumulated signal very very slow per SoS3 (see log for details). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- servers, inluding murmur server, had to be restarted. apo actor died, and be restarted. 00:30Z started ventilation. Compressed 60 days mcptpm date on sdsshost2 to make space. One small screw was found in southwest pinch point. Not sure where it come from. We did not find anywhere it possible dropped from. We checked and did not find anything obviously lose. The screw is on 2.5m control room. we took BOSS bias and dark with enclosure doors close (frames 114877-78) and open (14879-80) to check if light leakage on R2. It confirmed the light leakage has been fixed. We run a test on dependence of BOSS spectro collimate on telescope positions, the results reported below: Collimation results at 121, 30, 0: hartmann frames: 114883-84 camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.07, 0.03 -0.12 -0.01 At 121, 90, 0 : Before piston movement 114885-86 (scale and focus has been changed) camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.10, 0.16 -0.06 -0.17 moved sp2 by 979 steps, -1199 steps on SP2, two sets of hartmann 114887-88 and 114889-90, the same results: camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.25, 0.00 0.09 -0.02 Move the telescope to 121, 70, 0: hartmann exposure 114891-92: camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.25, -0.01 0.10 0.03 Move to 121, 70, 60: hartmann exposures 114893-94: camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.20, 0.00 0.03 0.00 telescope at 121, 30, 0, hartmann 114895-96: camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.20, -0.04 0.08 0.14 Telscope at 121, 30, 60, hartmann 114897-98: camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.10, 0.02 -0.05 0.05 Telscope at 121, 70, 0: 114899-114900 camera b1 r1 b2 r2 mean offset (pix) -0.17, 0.03 0.11 0.12 Night: ----- 02:20Z It was overcasting, we decided to continue our afternoon test on collimation.
