APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 19, 2001 (MJD 52172) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Stephanie Snedden - APO Pete Newman - APO Mike Harvanek APO - swing shift ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! We hope for more imaging tonight. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Another good night with mostly imaging and one cartridge done. We're looking forward to doing spectroscopy so we can get out more. Completed strips 44 N and 82 S, and plate 672. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We discovered a TCC/MCP interface problem during afternoon setup (see problems) , but resolved it and were on-sky by sunset. There were clouds on the horizon from the south to the northwest, but it was clear overhead. We set up for imaging. There was some concern about starting imaging with a 10% illuminated moon, but according to skycalc, we would be almost 90 degrees away with a lunar sky brightness of only 24.5 mag in V. We were imaging under great seeing by the end of twilight. Would you believe 0. 7 asec in i'? While slewing to a field, the alt axis aborted (see problems). While imaging stripe 82 S, a small cloud passed through the region. We rescanned the affected area. At about 03:00, under the threat of clouds, we decided to switch to spectroscopy. We completed the only late-night plate available to us. 05:15 - Closed. While closing, we had problems with a flat field screen sensor (problems section). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2581 100 O bias 94.17 98.09 40 bias on telescope 2582 44 N science 1.00 45.33 309 good data 2583 82 S science 118.58 158.05 274 cloud at the end 2584 82 S ignore 147.44 147.70 16 2585 82 S science 142.15 157.57 115 rescan last part w/o clouds 2586 82 S ignore -146.90 -146.40 17 Clouds. switch to spectroscopy. ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- RUN 2582 - Strip 44 N --------------------- 20:10 -> Out of focus donuts. -300 out of focus: frame 17 +300 out of focus: frame 19 best focus: frame 29 20:34 frame 57 -> skippy & focus good. 20:41 frame 67, lambda=10 -> Ramp up to science 20:48 frame 80, lambda=12 -> Begin science 22:53 frame 289, lambda=43 -> End science 23:01 frame 309, Lamba=45 -> End ramp down RUN 2583 - Strip 82 S --------------------- 23:23 frame 42 -> skippy & focus ok 23:23 frame 42, lambda=124 -> ramp up to science 23:37 frame 56, lambda=126 -> Begin science 01:18 frame 224 lambda=151 -> A small cloud entered the scan area. 01:33 frame 251, lambda=155 -> End science 01:43 frame 274 , lambda=157 -> End ramp down RUN 2584 - Strip 82 S --------------------- Ignore this drift. Per software policy, we reverted from his NOCVS version back to v5_4_3. This included a soft reboot of the MCP that appeared to work correctly. However, when we went to set fiducials, we discovered that we could not move the telescope in az or rot via the TCC. We * could* move alt with the TCC. We were able to move all 3 axes with the mcpMenu. When commanding a slew with the TCC, there were no error messages. When stealing authority with the mcpMenu and moving an axis, the TCC complained about timing out on port LTA19. Clearly, the TCC and MCP communication interface had problems. We did a hard reboot of the MCP, and that fixed everything. Perhaps Carlos should pour his connector cleaner solution over the boards in the MCP rack... just kidding...really. ALTITUDE ABORT EVENT: --------------------- We had another abort event, this time in altitude. Over the last 3 nights we've seen one abort in each axis. This time, it was related to a max acceleration exceeded problem. It occurred while slewing, not tracking. The interlocks display indicated the problem was the flat field sensor. By pressing on a petal, then running back to the laptop & trying to reset the amps it was finally determined that the culprit was the sensor on the 03:00 petal. It looks like it needs to be adjusted.
