APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday October 10, 2001 (MJD 52193) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Engineering ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Here is a summary of the engineering work done with the telescope tonight. In short, fiducial tables were created and implemented in mcp v5_6_1. Also the spectro monthly checkout was completed. Finally, the monthly archive tape was written. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The primary was relaxed this afternoon. The M2 migs are not showing up in the tpm display. Az brake air was turned back on during checkout ( I hope this was OK ). While the other engineering tasks were going on, the ''monthly'' log archive was written. It is not clear why the script decided to archive the last 300 days of tpm data. It took about 7 hours to write the tape. The tape is JL4509. Fiducial data was taken this evening. Two things were noticed during the acquisition of rotator data. 1) With the altitude at 90 degrees and live when taking the rotator data, it was noticed that there is a substantial balance shift as the rotator turns. The altitude motor current as displayed in the Menu went from around 2200 when the rotator was near 0, to around -600 when the rotator was near 180 degrees. This seems like a significant shift and wonder if it indicates a balance problem with the rotator which needs attention. 2) At rotator angles between -150 and -180, the rotator wrap starts creaking. The wrap on the south side ( the one with all the small air hoses in it ), is very compressed ( the links are bunched up accordion fashion trying to make the chain as short as possible, while the cables are taught ). I don't know if this is a problem, but thought it should be mentioned in case no one was aware of it. The rotator data was nearly identical to the existing table, so there is no need to change it. The new az.dat and alt.dat tables, as well as the AZ_TICK of axis.h were changed and checked in as v5_6_1 of mcp and a new version was created. It has not been declared test, as I am not sure if Robert is done with his changes. In any case the new tables will be included in whatever is declared as test for shake. Spectro Monthly checkout was completed. Small moves of the collimators and a 6 degree tweak of the sp1 blue focus were the only adjustments needed. 11154 - 60 dithered flats 11161 - 62 arcs. 11163 - 65 biases 11166 - 68 darks Note that SoS complained that the darks on sp1 were too high. It was found that running the histogram calculations on plate-mapper was much faster than was achieved on host last month. Mike's more detailed notes follow. The positions of the fibers left-to-right on the ccds were adjusted slightly (3-4 pixels). No adjustments of the position of the spectra in wavelength were necessary. Only the b1 spectrograph collimation mirror needed focusing (-6 degress). All others were in focus. After focusing the b1 spectrograph collimation mirror, another flat and arc were taken and all positions were found to be in the black. For the first 2 dithered flats, there were XMAX values in the yellow. For the 2nd arc after the dithered flats, there were BESTCORR and NLAMPS values in the yellow. The last dithered flat (#7) and the first arc following the dithered flats were not reduced by Son-of- Spectro because S-o-S claimed that the flat field screens were not closed and the lamps were not turned on. Bias frames for 00011163 were inspected visually and looked as they did last month. Plots of the histogram of values for the 3 biases and 3 darks were done. Copies of these plots can be found on plate-mapper in /ide_disk/spectro/52193 (biasxxxxx.ps and darkxxxx.ps). Percentiles from the idl reductions along with percentiles reported by S-o-S can also be found here (biaspercentiles, darkpercentiles, sos98percentiles). All frames from the relevant biases and darks are stored here too. For all 3 dark frames, the 98th percentile values reported by S-o-S for b1 and r1 were out of spec (in the red). This also occurred last month. Did anyone else ever look at the dark frames? Perhaps someone should have a look as this may be a problem. The 98th percentile values from Son-of-Spectro are included below. b1 r1 b2 r2 -------------------------------------- DARK-00011166 PERCENTILE98 25 23 16 13 23:19 DARK-00011167 PERCENTILE98 24 23 17 13 23:37 DARK-00011168 PERCENTILE98 24 23 17 13 23:54 =============================================================== fiducial table data gathered tonight. # # azimuth fiducials # # Time: Wed Oct 10 21:15:02 MDT 2001 # File: mcpFiducials-52193.dat # Encoder: pos1 # Scale: 0.014016669435746228 # Arguments: -dir /mcptpm/52193 -mjd 52193 -az -canon -reset -scale -table stdout -y pos1 -x fididx -time0 1002759866 -time1 1002763821 # # Fiducial Mark +- error npoint 1 -38400923 +- 40.0 8 2 -34541969 +- 51.7 8 3 -30688822 +- 37.0 8 4 -26822725 +- 40.4 8 5 -22966118 +- 29.6 8 6 -19111816 +- 38.9 8 7 -15251789 +- 20.0 8 8 -11392495 +- 17.0 8 9 -7546550 +- 26.7 8 10 -3686587 +- 33.7 8 11 173341 +- 28.2 8 12 4030415 +- 26.9 8 13 7881436 +- 16.3 8 14 11740909 +- 25.9 8 15 15591127 +- 24.5 8 16 19453757 +- 20.2 8 17 23301972 +- 22.1 8 18 27162958 +- 0.0 8 19 31016188 +- 2.8 7 20 34870031 +- 20.7 6 21 38754904 +- 15.0 6 22 42604497 +- 24.3 6 23 46360684 +- 41.2 6 24 50212616 +- 60.5 2 25 54060414 +- 20.6 6 26 57919369 +- 26.2 6 27 61772516 +- 27.2 6 28 65638612 +- 37.7 6 29 69495220 +- 22.6 6 30 73349521 +- 42.4 6 31 77209548 +- 38.8 6 32 81068842 +- 45.9 6 33 84914788 +- 26.0 6 34 88774750 +- 30.9 6 35 92634678 +- 38.9 6 36 96491752 +- 49.8 6 37 100342774 +- 50.1 6 # # altitude fiducials # # Time: Wed Oct 10 21:44:34 MDT 2001 # File: /mcptpm/52193/mcpFiducials-52193.dat # Encoder: pos1 # Scale: 0 # Arguments: -dir /mcptpm/52193 -mjd 52193 -alt -canon -reset -table /home/long /alt.dat -y pos1 -x fididx -time0 1002767494 -time1 1002768300 # # Fiducial Mark +- error npoint 1 3825222 +- 9.2 6 2 7433840 +- 3.1 6 3 11772367 +- 6.3 6 4 15433145 +- 0.0 6 5 19322816 +- 4.2 6 6 23091568 +- 5.3 6 ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11141, plate -9999 ------- 03:29 11141 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 11142, plate 712 ------- 03:33 11142 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 11142, plate 9999 ------- 03:38 11143 10.0 flat test 03:50 11144 10.0 flat test 03:53 11145 2.0 arc test 04:01 11146 10.0 flat test 04:04 11147 2.0 arc test ----- sequence 11142, plate 712 ------- 04:15 11148 2.0 arc {{focus, hartmann l}} 04:17 11149 3.0 arc {{focus, hartmann r}} 04:37 11150 3.0 arc {{focus, hartmann l}} 04:39 11151 3.0 arc {{focus, hartmann r}} ----- sequence 11142, plate 9999 ------- 04:45 11152 10.0 flat test 04:49 11153 2.0 arc test ----- sequence 11142, plate 712 ------- 05:01 11154 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:04 11155 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:07 11156 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:10 11157 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:13 11158 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:16 11159 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:19 11160 10.0 flat {{dithered flats-flat}} 05:22 11161 2.0 arc {{dithered flats-arc}} 05:24 11162 2.0 arc {{dithered flats-arc}} 05:43 11163 0.0 bias {{}} 05:46 11164 0.0 bias {{}} 05:49 11165 0.0 bias {{}} 06:19 11166 0.0 dark test 06:37 11167 0.0 dark test 06:54 11168 0.0 dark test ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 16:01 49 34 10 234 (SW) 212 - Light Rain 17:01 49 33 13 259 (W) 271 - Mostly Cloudy 18:01 50 32 12 258 (WSW) 3595 - Partly Cloudy 19:01 45 31 18 231 (SW) 808 - Partly Cloudy 20:01 41 34 5 354 (N) 537 - Mostly Cloudy 21:01 40 31 15 4 (N) 330 - Mostly Cloudy 22:01 42 27 12 260 (W) 345 - Cloudy 23:01 42 27 10 301 (WNW) 346 - Cloudy 23:49 41 24 14 311 (NW) 304 - Cloudy 00:20 41 25 6 343 (NNW) 333 - Cloudy 00:52 40 24 9 310 (NW) 327 - Mostly Cloudy 01:23 38 25 4 2 (N) 333 - Partly Cloudy 01:55 38 25 6 15 (NNE) 313 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Telescope stowed at 30 degrees with cartridge 7 mounted.
