Yeehaw! ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Being partially moony, we started with cartridge 4, plate 742. On the gotoField, we got a too large to correct alt fiducial crossing (on every fiducial). We forced the correction and went to an fk5 star, it being pretty early before twilight still. Still no star, so we re-checked fiducials (OK) and did a spiralPattern. spiralPattern found our star 5"N and 5"E. We were ready way before twilight so decided to take a couple twilight exposures anyhow with an extra set of preCalibs after the first exposure which we started around 01:00UT. (Twilight is at 01:30UT.) We finished this plate easily in three exposures. Next up: Cartridge 5, plate 740. During the instChange slew, the telescope halted in altitude. It took a few axis inits to recover. This was about 02:15:00UT. We found guideStars on the initial gotoField. We finally got to Pete's email about watching the TPM MIG values during scaleChange towards the end of this plate and when we did, found no problems; they all seemed to move in unison. During the last exposure here, we noticed the TCC was giving us gcam doread errors, although the guider images seemed to be updating OK. We got Russell (who is here) and asked him what to do. We did two gcam inits and a gcam status to make sure all was well and it was. A gcam doread verified all was OK. SoS called for postCalibs which we took after the smear. Next up cartridge 3 plate 797. No guide stars, so we went to an fk5. Found it with no troubles and continued along our merry spectroscopic way. The guiding, however, was not good. The computed errors and requested scaleChanges were small, but the lower half of the guide stars were NOT very well-centered. We wondered if this was due to our VERY bright star in fiber 6, so disabled it after the first exposure to see if things improved. (The S/N SoS figure didn't look too bad, but did show some signs of systematics would could be attributed to what we are seeing in the guiding.) There was no obvious change, so we re-enabled fiber 6 and decided to live with things as they were, for better or worse. SoS also reported a redMonster (we wonder if it also had a white beard). Since there were no imaging stripes available around 22:30, we did a fourth exposure on this plate to get its total (S/N)^2, combined with that of last night) above 30 as is the new spec. for photo-z-like plates. We finished exposing this plate around 05:36, then did a post-calib since we already had a smear and figured it couldn't hurt (we also had some time to kill before an imaging strip was up). We started with 31S at a startLambda of -63 (science should be at -60). We had an az too large to correct fiducial crossing during the slew of -1874; we forced a TCC correction. Focus was good early on and pointing was good initially. We past lambda=-60 around frame 22. Again, our formula predicted a focus of about -80; the real value was around -450. We reached a nuError >8.0" sometime shortly after frame 330. (Note: we started the drift with the offsets left over from our spectroscopy in place.) Due to twilight and the placement of available stripes, we opted to keep this scan going past the desired endLambda of +2. Seeing got worse (to acceptable) around frame 500, lambda~12. We stopped the run around lambda=21 (frame 564) to get the rest of 33S leftover from last night. The nuErr was 9.7 (above 8.0, but less than 18.0) from the start of the run, but otherwise acceptable pointing and focus at run start. We got donuts at the end of this run (in twilight): Frame Focus 97 nominal 100 nominal-300 108 nominal+300 We stopped the run at frame 109 and took a short bias run while closing up shop.
