APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 20, 2002 (MJD 52295) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Jurek Krzesinski (APO) Atsuko Nitta (APO; swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Spectroscopy until the moon goes down then imaging if conditions permit. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric all night but seeing was never good enough for a long enough period of time to switch to imaging. Five plates done (807, 826, 775, 561, 525). Good data for another plate (829). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- It was photometric at sunset but since the moon was up we began with spectroscopy using cartridge 4, plate 807. This is a photoz plate that already had data and a smear from a previous night (52293). Guide stars were found after going to a nearby FK5 star. When combined with the existing data, this plate was finished after 5 exposures. The cloud camera required filling after only 3.5 hours. Next, we did cartridge 3, plate 826. Guide stars were seen at the edge of the fibers on the gotoField and no FK5 star was necessary. This plate was finished in 3 exposures. We got the following error from the watcher: azimuth (correction for azimuth -270415 is too large (Jan 20 21:04:01): Jan 20 21:04:19 MST ) Az fiducials were being read and corrected immediately after this error though so it did not cause us to lose our pointing. We had a similar error in altitude and another in azimuth a little later (see the problems section). These errors seemed to coincide with moving to instrument change position. Next, we did cartridge 2, plate 775. Guide stars were seen in almost all fibers on the gotoField. We were set up and ready to go 15 minutes before the plate officially became available but we went ahead and started a science exposure anyway (rather than waiting and sitting idle). This plate was finished in 3 exposures. By the time we finished this plate the moon had set but seeing was too poor (2-3 arcsecs) for imaging. The cloud camera again required filling after only 3.5 hours. Next, we did cartridge 8, plate 561. Guide stars were found on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures. The seeing was deemed too variable to switch to imaging after this plate. We saw the TCC watcher error shown below multiple times tonight: timed out while writing to hub message mailbox:: (Jan 21 01:43:26 MST) Next, we did cartridge 7, plate 829. Guide stars were found on the gotoField. The availability of this plate expired before we could finish it but we got 3 good exposures on it. The cloud camera again required filling after only 3.5 hours. Twice after issuing the gotoField -gflat command from the sop GUI tonight, the SlewType in tccMon failed to change from SlewBegin to SlewEnd and the tccMon never recognized that the slew had finished (although all 3 axes showed tracking). The 'I think the slew has started' command just kept scrolling by in the sop window preventing anything from being typed in that window. To remedy this, a track command was issued from the tcc window. This changed SlewType from SlewBegin to SlewEnd and the 'I think the slew is finished' statement finally appeared in the sop window. However, we did not get a guider flat and so another gotoField -gflat was issued. This appeared to solve the problem. We finished the night with cartridge 5, plate 525. Guide stars were not visible on the gotoField but were obtained without the use of an fk5 star. This plate had data and smears from 2 previous nights (52289 and 52293). When combined with the existing data, this plate was finished after 2 exposures. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2895 100 O ignore -183.19 -176.84 56 doghouse ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 12755, plate -9999 ------- 23:00 12755 0.0 bias 23:13 12756 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12757, plate 807 ------- 56.1 20.9 61.1 31.3 tonight 01:39 12757 10.0 flat 31.9 9.9 23.7 8.8 52293 01:41 12758 2.0 arc ------------------- 02:01 12759 901.0 target 88.0 30.8 84.8 40.1 DONE 02:29 12760 1503.0 target 02:58 12761 1501.0 target 03:26 12762 1500.0 target 03:54 12763 1500.0 target 03:59 12764 10.0 flat 04:01 12765 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12766, plate 826 ------- 16.7 15.8 15.2 16.2 DONE 04:19 12766 10.0 flat 04:21 12767 2.0 arc 04:51 12768 1503.0 target 05:18 12769 1502.0 target 05:49 12770 1503.0 target 05:56 12771 240.0 smear 05:59 12772 10.0 flat 06:01 12773 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12774, plate 775 ------- 24.3 15.0 29.0 13.9 DONE 06:25 12774 10.0 flat 06:28 12775 2.0 arc 07:04 12776 1800.0 target 07:38 12777 1801.0 target 08:11 12778 1801.0 target 08:18 12779 240.0 smear 08:21 12780 10.0 flat 08:23 12781 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12782, plate 561 ------- 26.0 21.3 21.9 14.7 DONE 08:36 12782 10.0 flat 08:38 12783 2.0 arc 09:04 12784 1202.0 target 09:23 12785 902.0 target 09:35 12786 602.0 target 09:42 12787 240.0 smear 09:45 12788 10.0 flat 09:47 12789 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12790, plate 829 ------- 18.7 11.8 21.8 10.5 10:12 12790 10.0 flat 10:15 12791 2.0 arc 10:32 12792 901.0 target 10:55 12793 1202.0 target 11:18 12794 1200.0 target 11:25 12795 240.0 smear 11:28 12796 10.0 flat 11:30 12797 2.0 arc ----- sequence 12798, plate 525 ------- 19.4 10.8 18.8 9.0 tonight 11:47 12798 10.0 flat 3.8 2.6 3.7 2.7 52289 11:49 12799 2.0 arc 4.2 3.2 3.9 2.5 52293 12:14 12800 1201.0 target ------------------- 12:36 12801 1201.0 target 27.4 16.6 26.4 14.2 DONE 12:43 12802 240.0 smear 12:49 12803 10.0 flat 12:51 12804 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:40 4 807 1011577208 0.003171 -0.000906 -0.008110 0.999970 19:35 4 807 1011580518 0.003171 -0.000906 -0.008110 0.999920 20:31 4 807 1011583917 0.003171 -0.000906 -0.008110 0.999880 21:29 3 826 1011587370 0.002347 -0.001620 -0.005424 1.000030 22:25 3 826 1011590744 0.002347 -0.001620 -0.005424 0.999970 23:34 2 775 1011594893 0.001762 -0.000078 -0.025548 1.000100 00:40 2 775 1011598835 0.001762 -0.000078 -0.025548 1.000060 01:02 2 775 1011600124 0.001762 -0.000078 -0.025548 1.000040 01:49 8 561 1011602979 -0.001006 0.001084 -0.021507 0.999970 02:07 8 561 1011604045 -0.001006 0.001084 -0.021507 1.000010 03:19 7 829 1011608360 0.002479 0.002755 -0.029281 1.000090 04:07 7 829 1011611246 0.002479 0.002755 -0.029281 1.000160 04:58 5 525 1011614311 0.004475 0.001072 -0.014237 1.000070 05:41 5 525 1011616880 0.004475 0.001072 -0.014237 1.000070 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4959 Stays: JL4960 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:38 4 807 0.99997 296 1555 150 5 57.1 -2.6 12 317 -
