APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 8, 2002 (MJD 52373) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Swing: Smokey Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We opened! Not photometric, but perfectly good for spectroscopy most of the night (bad seeing later killed efficiency). We finished 5 plates and got partial exposures on a sixth. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Hooray, we can open! It's not photometric, but looks like some good spectroscopy weather. We started with cartridge 9, plate 908. We finished this plate in three exposures and went on to cart 3 plate 907. We found all stars on the gotoField. We finished this plate also in three exposures, and went on to cart 8, plate 839. We had to clear the old offsets to find guide stars on this plate. We also finished this plate in 3 exposures, and went on to cart 5 plate 781 where we saw guide stars on the gotoField. We finished this plate in 3 exposures and went on to cartridge 7, plate 854 and found guide stars on the gotoField. The seeing was noticeably worse for this plate than the previous plates. (The 3.5m confirmed.) This plate took a lot longer to finish (conditions were worse). We then proceeded to cart 1, plate 616. We found guide stars on the gotoField. We didn't manage to finish this plate, but got a (S/N)^2 of10.6. endNight was running as a I sent this log. swing shift activities: ----------------------- Afternoon checkout went without any problems. cloud camera calibration: ------------------------- During the afternoon, Dave W., Craig & Steph set up the cloud camera for calibration. We adjusted the level and gain so that neither the hottest nor coldest levels are clipped. We do note, however, that at a temperature difference of about 1 C, there is not much signal difference between the calibrator background and the plate. This is about the best we can do, though, since changing the gain or level from the current positions will cause either the hot or the cold side to be clipped. I will aim for a larger temperature range tonight, to compensate. We also set up the site cloud camera for comparison. Throughout the test there was cirrus moving through, but at our gain & level settings, the prototype camera did not see it. So, Jim, for the range at which we see clouds, we can't see your calibrator's plate heat up. If we wind up changing the level, will we still be able to use this calibration for temperature differences? If not, we may have to get a different video card and calibrate again. In any event here are the results. I have broken the data into two sets. For set one, I read the temperature on the minute, but the images were taken at 37 seconds past. For data set 2, I read the temperature at 37 seconds past the minute. This set should be better.
