APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday September 5, 2002 (MJD 52523) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Ktzrkrzynzkszki (Day) Dan Log Scoot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A mostly clear night during which we finished four plates ( 1 987, 2 684, 6 646, 7 1082 ) and got substantial data on two others ( 4 1022, 3 1094 ). Except for loosing two calibration lamp bulbs during the night there were no problems. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Replaced number 3 HgCd lamp as it would not come on during afternoon test. It had been replaced during the day as well. Possibly a bad bulb from the start. 02:00z Cartridge 4 1022: Set up well before twilight. We used an fk5 star to find the field, but it was only a few arcseconds off; the real problem was the bright sky. About half way done ( photo Z - like ) in 3 exposures totaling 3500 seconds. 03:50z Cartidge 1 987: Guide stars on slew. Done in three exposures totaling 3600 seconds. 05:20z Cartridge 6 646: Guide stars on slew. Clouds slowing us down. Getting twos and threes in 20 minutes. Clouds thin in later exposures. Done in 4 exposures totaling 5200 seconds. 07:20z Cartridge 2 684: Guide stars on slew. Clouds ruin second exposure ( 16222 quality set to bad with apofix ). Plate not done. Two useable exposures totaling 2100 seconds. 10:25z Cartridge 7 1082: Guide stars on slew. preCalib seems to have forgotten to take the arc. We tried the arc again after the first science exposure. This time we saw why there wasn't one before. Only three of the neon lamps came on. Sure enough, the number 4 lamp was burned out. It had been replaced only yesterday. This is also the second lamp to burn out today. The time to replace the lamp was about 15 minutes. We had to slew the telescope to zenith to swap the bulb. We went back to the field to take the calibration. Hopefully the arc is still valid after this motion. We took an additional science exposure and post calibs just to be safe.
