APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 4, 2002 (MJD 52552) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden Pete Newman - days Craig Loomis (working on IR cam software) Jon Brinkmann (by phone) Carlos Gonzalez (by phone) French Leger (by phone) Anaheim Angels 9 New York Yankees 6 ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science, following the usual strategies. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spent the night imaging under mostly good seeing. Finished strip 43 N, all of 82S from lambda=162 to -126 and 82 N from lambda=-162 to -131. Obtained imager twilight flats. Had problems with PT TCS that affects quality of the patches taken tonight (see the PT log). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- We were on the sky with the imager mounted at twilight. The highest priority stripes must be started just as twilight ends. We set up on strip 43 N so that we would reach a lambda of 30 at 02:00Z. Scan started at 01:40Z for focus, skippy check. We were getting good science by the end of twilight. See the imaging details section. We then moved on to strip 82 S, imaging for about 5 hours from lambda 162 to lambda -126 under variable, but mostly good seeing. This finished the strip. We then went to stripe 82 N , imaging for a little over two hours into twilight, ending science at lambda -129 , although the drift continued for Jim's donuts. Donuts are stored in /data/photo/optics/52552/ in focus (-567), frame 240 at 11:41Z out of focus +300 (-267), frame 248 out of focus -300 (-867), frame 252 Finally, we ended the night still on the equator (82 N) and on the meridian to get a twilight imager flat. See the imager details section on run 3363. IR Camera notes: ---------------- We ran the IR sky camera using Jim's image processing code. At the beginning of the night, we were sampling with a 15 second interval, with a 'flat' average of five frames. jeg emailed us, saying that the interval was too short for a 5 frame flat (can't guarantee that a cloud has moved more than one diameter in that time, I guess). We then changed to a 30 sec interval with a 10 frame average. Tonight was beautifully clear, with cloud camera std. dev. staying close to 2.8 for most of the night. We have been asked to monitor the std. dev. and compare it to sky conditions, and structure in the IR camera images: sigma conditions ----- ---------- 9.7 Clear to the eye, IR camera does show slight structure. Satellite is clear. 2.8 Clear to the eye. Images show virtually no structure in the area above alt=35 deg (we did see some structure closer to the horizon). 4.2 Clear to the eye. Clear on satellite image. Slight structure in the IRcam image. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3358 01:40Z 03:29Z 43 N 25.27 52.54 195 science strip 43 N completed 3359 03:32Z 03:48Z 100 O 135.90 139.95 41 bias on telescope 3360 03:54Z 09:10Z 82 S 121.55 -159.30 541 science - mostly good seeing 3361 09:16Z 09:18Z 82 N -157.38 -156.98 17 ignore 3362 09:20Z 11:48Z 82 N -164.53 -127.55 261 science - mostly good seeing 3363 11:57Z 12:24Z 82 N -97.85 -91.16 58 engineering - twilight flat ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3358, Strip 43 N: --------------------- 02:00Z Lambda=30, frame=40, skippy good, focus loop converged. Seeing running slightly subarcsecond in i'. Seeing deteriorated at about frame 120, lambda 42, ranging from acceptable then back to good at the end of the run (lambda=52). 03:27Z frame 186, lambda=52. End of science and ramp down. Ended the drift. Run 3359 Bias: -------------- 03:33Z started bias on telescope. 03:47Z Bias ended at frame 33 Run 3360, Strip 82 S: --------------------- 03:54Z lambda 121.4, started the drift. Skippy and focus needed no adjustments, so we were good for science from the start of the drift. Seeing went from good to acceptable at frame 132, lambda 140 until frame 191, lambda 149. It then went back to good seeing until frame 340, lambda 171. It went to acceptable again until frame 380, lambda 177. 09:08Z Drift ended at frame 533, lambda 159.6. Run 3361, Strip 82 N: --------------------- Aborted, since startLambda was wrong. Run 3362, Strip 82 N: --------------------- 09:20Z Drift started at lambda -165. Skippy and focus were in spec from the beginning. Seeing good to frame 84, frame -153, where it became acceptable to bad. It became good again at frame 127, lambda -147 and stayed good to the end of the drift. Donuts for Jim are at the end of the run, starting at frame 240, at about 11:41Z. Run 3363, Strip 82 N: --------------------- Moved to an HA of approx 0 on 82N to get the imager twilight flats. Ran the drift until we reached counts of 19,000. We meant to end after we saw 20,000 counts, but jumped the gun a little. Jim, let us know if these twilight flats are okay. 12:25Z ended the drift at frame 50. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el We pressed on the 6 o'clock flat-field petal, and after resetting the amps twice, we were able to move again. PT Dome: -------- A dancing PT dome kept us occupied for a while tonight. The solution to the problem was a TCS reboot. See the PT log for all the details. At the very end of the night, the epoch on the TCS next object display became a negative number. It looks like we have TCS computer problems. We will check the disk for errors tomorrow afternoon.
