APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 12, 2002 (MJD 52621) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (swing) Jurek Krzesinki Atsuko Nitta Visitors: Bill Boroski Hercules Scot Kleinman Steph Snedden John Peoples Via Phone: The Amazing and Wonderful Connie (she called right after our PR was sent out!) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! spectro then imaging ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Slightly windy and cold, but mostly photometric night. o Two plates (1079, 1101)completed. o Imaging done on 29N, -57 to 3. The last couple degrees were in twilight, but no sky errors showed up in watcher. There is a part of the run (Frame 331 to 370 lambda=-8.9 to -2.9) that got "bad" according to SoKent although the plots and watcher did not indicate to us that it was any worse than the rest of the run. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Very moony the first half of the night. We start with spectroscopy. Cartridge 6 Plate 1101 ------------------------- Guider fiber 10 looks very dirty. We finished this plate in two exposures combined with last night's exposures. 02:37Z Bill made "Eric's hot coco". Our project manager takes care of us well. Cartridge 5 Plate 1079 -------------------------- 02:39Z stars on gotoField. For some reaons, the SAO image stopped updating with new images. So we did stopMon, startMon and showGuiderFrame. This fixed the problem. We finished this plate with 4x20min exposures. This is our last full science night. We will not complete Tremonti plate this dark run even if we observed 3hr10min (which is the plate's nominal observing window). We therefore decided to finish plate 1079 and then go to Tremonti plate to observe as many pointing as we can. I hope the data we get are enough to test the data reduction pipeline. If not, I suppose we will hear about it in the next dark run shake/science request. One of the side wheels on the lindy cart fell off while instrumentChange. Hercules fixed it while we observed the next plate. Cartridge 1 Plate 1179 ------------------------- Our 4th night on this plate. We have 4 pointings to finish. Pointing #4 --- two more exposures taken. Done. Pointing #5 --- one exposure. Maybe we get more tomorrow between shaking? We did postCalib instead of preCalib since we wanted to take as many science exposures as possible while the plate was in the nominal timezone. 06:00Z Iggy turned itself on. Why does it do that? Since the seeing was about 1.5" and the sky has been photometric for a while, we decided to mount the imager and wait for the moon to set which was about 1hr away. We sent the telescope to instChange position before going down to the telescope to put the imager on. But we found the telescope not moving or at the instChange position. The command was issued according to SOPGUI 2002-12-13 07:07:58Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY SOPGUI: instChange No watcher error is reported to let us know why the telescope did not move. There was no reported "too large to correct" fiducial crossing in any axis either. We were able to move the telescope to instChange position by a track command. Run 3528 ---------- Bias on the scope Run 3529 29N ------------- We start early since the moon has not set yet. skippy could not run and failed like it did two nights ago when we did imaging. We decided to issue another scanStripe rather than running skyGang which fixed the problem two nights ago. This worked. Frame 29 lambda=-57: Science starts here. We had it timed so that we start the science when the moon sets using the time in the calendar, but we saw slight glow from the moon in the NIR camera looking at the telescope. But no watcher error regarding sky values were present. Focus, skippy reported that all is well. 08:37Z The telescope took off. It went to instChange position. There was NO command sent from us. We have no idea what happened. In the scrolling TCC, we did see axis init followed by the track command to instchange position. Wecopy the message in the PROBLEM section along with the message in SOP window after the instChage was issued, but did not complete. Is it possible that the instChange command that did not get executed when we tried to change to imager was hiding in the buffer and got executed NOW? The murmurlog shows that instChange was issued at 07:08Z (which is when we did spectro --> imaging) and none after that. We grepped for instChange and track in murmurlog. There was an instChange issued at 07:07Z andd none after that. There is no track command issued around the time the telescope took off either. Here are some murmurlog output (grepping instChange and track )from the time we issued instChange to change spectro to imager uuntil after we reissued a scanStripe command to go back to the science imaging scan. 2002-12-13 07:07:58Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY SOPGUI: instChange 2002-12-13 07:07:59Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY instChange: opening slithead doors 2002-12-13 07:07:59Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY instChange: retracting slithead latches 2002-12-13 07:08:00Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY instChange: issued MCP: brake.offs 2002-12-13 07:08:00Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY instChange: issued TCC: axis init 2002-12-13 07:08:21Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY instChange: issued TCC: track 121,90 mount /rotangle=0 /rottype=mount 2002-12-13 07:08:21Z sdsshost IOP 109314 TEXTONLY instChange: issued TCC: track 121,90 mount /rotangle=0 /rottype=mount 2002-12-13 07:46:08Z sdsshost IDA 109524 TEXTONLY tccPut track 113.23743202,18.85662545 FK5 /rotty=obj /rota=0 /rotwrap=MID /tel1wrap=MID /ScanVelocity=(0.00298274626858769... 2002-12-13 08:12:11Z sdsshost IDA 109524 TEXTONLY tccPut track 117.88731268,22.99790460 FK5 /rotty=obj /rota=0 /rotwrap=MID /tel1wrap=MID /ScanVelocity=(0.00306638183652542... 2002-12-13 08:41:25Z sdsshost IDA 109524 TEXTONLY tccPut track 117.88731268,22.99790460 FK5 /rotty=obj /rota=0 /rotwrap=MID /tel1wrap=MID /ScanVelocity=(0.00306638183652542... /astrolog Host[2:12] We felt paranoid. We did tccClose in our SOP sessions so that we cannot accidentally send any commands from SOP. Run 3530 29N lambda=-57.5 -------------------------- The run is good from the beginning. Right after we sent out the PR regarding the telescope taking off during the imaging, the amazing and most wonderful Connie called. She wanted to make sure the telescope did not move too fast and experienced an abrupt stop. The telescope was happily tracking when it reached instChange position and we saw no aborts or watcher errors indicating that any high speed movement and an abrupt stop happened. So the telescope probably did a normal happy track to the instChange position. Frame 331 to 370 lambda=-8.9 to -2.9: SoKent says the seeing is bad from here. But the plot shows the seeing to be in-spec ( <1.5 ).The FWHM info in watcher shows few chips in red, but mostly in black. Is there any other info sddingRun uses that could result in saying the seeing is out-of-spec (yellow)? By the time the twilight started at 12:30Z, we had couple degrees in lambda left. We continued the scan since we were not getting any sky errors in watcher yet. In frame 386 ccd 13, frame 390 ccd 33, frame 394 ccd 53 has a nice big galaxy. Frame 302 lambda 1.8 seeing is now "acceptable". Frame 412 lambda 3.3: end of science Now it is time to do donuts. Frame 412 in-focus (focus=-312) Frame 417 -400 out (focus=-712) Frame 422 +400 out (focus=88) We ended the drift after the donuts and started endNight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time
