APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 9, 2003 (MJD 52649) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden, Howard Brewington Night: Mike Harvanek, Pete Newman Support: French Leger (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Four plates completed (1010, 1012, 1073, 1192). Several hours lost to high humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- GET MIRROR NUMBERS! Afternoon checks: The spectrograph collimation and focus were checked using cartridge 1, T=6.8C All were in spec, but the actuators were tweaked anyway. Collimator mirror actuators moved: sp1: 972 sp2: 662 New positions: sp1> A=6918, B=6918, C=6918 sp2> A=5905, B=5913, C=5906 See files obserer@sos.apo.nmsu.edu:Collimate-52649-*-00017985.* for details. Night shift: Variable low cloud at sunset with marginal but declining humidity. The dew-point depression limits delayed us opening the enclosure until after sunset, and when we did open, the primary mirror was about 6.5K above outside air temperature, and was still about 3.5K above air at 18deg twilight. The dew-point depression reported by the 3.5m kit (in this log and shown by the displayweath command) and the PT kit (shown by TPM) were in good agreement tonight, so the hang-up experienced by the 3.5m kit yesterday seems to be fixed. French investigated the loud scraping noises coming from the nrth side of the enclosure when we open it. GSOGTF unless otherwise mentioned. Watcher reported a windscreen touch in altitude (up) at 02:07:55Z. We think this was as we were coming up to 30deg alt in the enclosure when we re-closed the first time. We got another (down) during re-opening at 08:55:23Z. Observing sequence: 01:20Z Plate 1073, cartridge 2. Done in two exposures when combined with data from MJD 52647. One exposure, then closed on humidity over limit. The dew-point depression dropped to ~3K compared to air and there was significant frosted dew on horizontal surfaces, but the mirrors were still about 1K above air, so we are confident we closed before the mirrors dewed. We opened again long enough to get another exposure and finish the plate. 04:05Z Plate 811, cartridge 3. No data. Mounted just before we closed again as the humidity rose once more. 05:05Z The "clouds" on the IRSC are frost on the mirror, not clouds in the sky. We closed the IRSC while the humidity remained high, and cleared the mirror with a heat gun when we reopened. 09:00Z Plate 1192, cartridge 6. Done in 3 exposures. Seeing improved to ~1.5". We considered switching to imaging, but decided against on the bases of variable seeing and the threat of further humidity closures. 10:15Z Plate 1010, cartridge 8. Done in 3 exposures. FK5 required to center the field. Seeing bounced up from 1.5" to 2.2" and more clouds to S. 11:44Z Plate 1012, cartridge 7. Done in two exposures when combined with data from MJD 52641. The firrst exposure tonight was sufficient to finish the plate, but we were close enoughh to morning twilight that it was not worth trying to switch to another cartridge, so wee got an additional exposure on this plate as a bonus. endNight is running as this log is being mailed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:09 17978 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17979, plate 1130 ------- Ignore - collimation checks 23:16 17979 10.0 flat 23:18 17980 2.0 arc 23:27 17981 10.0 flat 23:29 17982 2.0 arc 23:37 17983 2.1 arc 23:40 17984 2.1 arc 23:50 17985 2.1 arc 23:53 17986 2.1 arc ----- sequence 17987, plate -9999 ------- 00:00 17987 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17988, plate 1073 ------- 8.1 7.8 8.0 9.5 Tonight 01:29 17988 10.0 flat 11.4 8.5 11.0 8.8 MJD 52647 01:32 17989 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 02:04 17990 1200.1 target 19.5 16.3 19.0 18.3 DONE 03:47 17991 1200.1 target 03:50 17992 10.0 flat 03:53 17993 2.0 arc ----- sequence 17994, plate 1192 ------- 19.7 17.4 20.1 20.2 DONE 09:15 17994 10.0 flat 09:18 17995 2.0 arc 09:37 17996 900.1 target 09:50 17997 600.1 target 10:03 17998 600.1 target 10:11 17999 240.0 smear ----- sequence 18000, plate 1010 ------- 27.7 18.5 24.3 20.7 DONE 10:32 18000 10.0 flat 10:34 18001 2.0 arc 10:53 18002 900.1 target 11:15 18003 1100.1 target 11:32 18004 900.1 target 11:41 18005 240.0 smear ----- sequence 18006, plate 1012 ------- 8.7 9.8 8.7 7.8 MJD 52641 11:55 18006 10.0 flat 19.8 14.5 19.3 12.3 Tonight 11:58 18007 2.0 arc ---- ---- ---- ---- 12:23 18008 1200.1 target 28.5 24.3 28.0 20.1 DONE 12:42 18009 900.1 target 12:50 18010 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Offsets not recorded for first two plates. 10:29Z 8 1010 178.83 -0.0060 70.12 0.0023 -1.64 -0.0152 1.000210 11:55Z 7 1012 201.05 -0.0034 66.75 0.0031 30.71 -0.0201 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5894 Stays: JL5895 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Focus not recorded for first two plates, but measured seeing ~2 arcsec on first then 1.5" on the second.
