APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday March 24, 2003 (MJD 52723) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Atsuko Nitta Night: Dan Long, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Several hours lost to clouds, but four plates done (1004, 1220, 1229, 1285). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: Spectro in focus. Around 23:36Z, I started the script "apo_daily_tapes" to start reading last night's data. Buit we subsequently found connection to omaha.apo.nmsu.edu lost again. Did it crash? Night: Clouds kept us closed until 06:05Z, when it cleared enough to try spectroscopy with continuing occasional clouds. On opening, we had a windscreen touch reported by watcher: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-03-25 06:16:18Z sdssmcp): 2003-03-25 06:16:39Z ) In fact, we've had a few of those in recent days. During one instrument change, the instChange command aborted with a traceback. See problem section #1. endNight is running as this log is being mailed. Observing sequence: 06:25Z Plate 1004, cartridge 6. Done, 3 exposures, 2420 s. Guide stars on gotoField after clearing last night's offsets. This is surprising, as last night we failed to hit guide stars at all without large offsets. We did unmount and remount the corrector lens this afternoon, but the other observer thinks this is not the issue. 07:46Z Plate 1220, cartridge 4. Done, 3 exposures, 2160 s. FK5 star needed, ~10 arcsec from cleared offsets. More clouds arrived during the third exposure. 08:58Z Plate 1229, cartridge 7. Done, 1 exposure, 975 s (ended when clouds rolled in), adding to signal obtained on MJD 52722. 09:45Z Plate 1285, cartridge 9. Done, 3 exposures, 3000 S. On hold for clouds for ~ 1 hour, then finished with postCals ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3815 23:04Z 23:23Z 100 O -122.68 -118.02 45 ignore doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): Yes - see below The standard QA procedures were completed and the following anomalies noted: 1. The flat and arc exposures 19987 and 19988 show that 3-4 fibers run off the top-right of the r2 chip, while there seems to be considerable room to the top-left of the first fiber. Are the Xmin/Xmax values, which SoS reports as good, either wrong or based on the center of the chip? The following record what are probably known defects, but I am trying to contribute to our 'library' of features that we know about. There are many orders this could be presented in, but since we examine one chip at a time, I have gathered them in that way. Warm means ~100 counts above average, but draining. Hot means ~100 counts above average and ~constant. The bias levels can depend on how many read-out have been performed, and those quoted here are from the first in the log for MJD 52723. The notes are combined with some made by Dan Long within the last two months. Positions are column or (row, column), or (row, column, radius). I will post this to folklore. r1: - Mean bias levels: left = 1150, right = 1205 - Warm read-out registers: 682, 714 - Hot pixels: none - Hot columns: 1152-1155, 1236, 1625 - Dark regions: (878, 1356, 9), (1170, 1578, 5) r2: - Mean bias levels: left = 560, right = 1450 - Warm read-out registers: 1803 - Hot pixels: none - Hot columns: 1601 - Dark regions: none b1: - Mean bias levels: left = 1215, right = 1015 - Warm read-out registers: none - Hot pixels: none - Hot columns: 1013 (weak) - Dark regions: (1754, 552, 18) b2: - Mean bias levels: left = 1240, right = 1215 - Warm read-out registers: 191, - Hot pixels: (433, 1313)? - Hot columns: 1313 - Dark regions: (1312, 1229, 2) extending to (1313, 1276, 1) UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 19981, plate -9999 ------- 23:01 19981 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19982, plate 1234 ------- Focus checks - ignore 23:08 19982 10.0 flat 23:11 19983 2.0 arc 23:14 19984 2.1 arc 23:16 19985 2.1 arc ----- sequence 19987, plate 1004 ------- 19.4 17.5 21.6 19.2 DONE 06:42 19987 10.0 flat 06:45 19988 2.0 arc 07:04 19989 900.1 target 07:20 19990 800.1 target 07:35 19991 720.1 target 07:42 19992 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19993, plate 1220 ------- 14.5 16.6 16.5 18.7 DONE 07:59 19993 10.0 flat 08:01 19994 2.0 arc 08:16 19995 720.1 target 08:31 19996 720.1 target 08:46 19997 720.1 target 08:54 19998 240.0 smear ----- sequence 19999, plate 1229 ------- 17.6 21.3 18.8 22.9 DONE 09:08 19999 10.0 flat 13.0 17.0 13.8 18.3 MJD 52722 09:10 20000 2.0 arc 4.6 4.3 5.0 4.6 Tonight 09:29 20001 974.5 target ----- sequence 20002, plate 1285 ------- 17.2 21.7 18.3 21.6 DONE 09:50 20002 10.0 flat 09:53 20003 2.0 arc 11:09 20004 1200.1 target 11:27 20005 900.1 target 11:45 20006 900.1 target 11:52 20007 240.0 smear 11:55 20008 10.0 flat 11:58 20009 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:41Z 6 1004 -20.58 0.0030 62.97 -0.0005 162.57 -0.0366 1.000040 07:56Z 4 1220 -57.18 0.0037 53.49 0.0022 134.18 -0.0086 1.000130 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6174 Stays: JL6175 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:39Z 6 1004 1.00004 -394 758 -60 -19 63.1 4.6 23 293 BG38 1.3 07:56Z 4 1220 1.00013 -1283 47 -60 -57 53.5 3.7 17 305 BG38 1.3 (Other plates not noted but seeing remained good. About the same time, we saw the TCC complain that it was no longer sending messages to user 11, although we did not copy those messages. This _may_ have been Dan's CCC connection. Here's what he did: Sent telescope to instChange then went down to help Pete close.
