APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday June 18, 2003 (MJD 52809) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Steph Snedden night: Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta Scot Kleinman (partial) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown - night 1 ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- All non-sky shake items (both day and night) were completed. Clouds (all night) and rain and lightning (early on) kept us closed all night. We had some problems doing the imaging checks (checkBias and checkLED) with v3_116_0. Specifically, plotBiasvec and plotFlatvec did not work and checkLED required the -outputDir option (even if it was the same as the input directory), failed if multiple bias vectors were present and had permissions problems. There were no problems at all doing these checks with v3_113_2. On the bright side, the number of warnings that occurred during checkBias were greatly reduced when using v3_116_0. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift tasks: ================== June 17 ------ 1) Checked /data/lostSpectroFrames for recent wayward science frames. There were none. 2) New fiducial tables installed from the data that Wendell collected. We are now reading rotator fiducial 41, which was missing from the last table. Also, the azimuth errors were approaching 10 asec in some cases, so I felt it was time to update the tables. We are now using v1_6 of mcp_fiducials. The white board was updated. 3) Monthly spectro checkout completed. Slight adjustments to spatial and wavelength positions. The collimator positions after the adjustments: sp1:A=-6665, B=-6465, C=-7565 sp2:A=-7392, B=-7391, C=-7391 Sp-2 blue focus ring was adjusted +7.5 degrees Final collimator position: sp1:A=-4373, B=-4173, C=-5274 sp2:A=-5091, B=-5092, C=-5091 Dithered flats and arcs taken. Spectro biases and darks taken, examined and histograms archived. All changes for sdssProcedures given in the changeLog were checked and found to be present. Got the following error message when starting up logTool: im> logTool 2003-06-19 02:13:44Z: Failed to execute command on observer@hoggpt.apo.nmsu.edu; ssh error was ERROR : REQUIRED SETUP -f Linux photoop v0_8_1 failed ERROR : REQUIRED UNSETUP -f Linux photoop v0_8_1 failed FATAL ERROR : setup failed hoggpt_status: Command not found. .logtool.logviewer3 Perhaps this has something to do with the change of hoggpt version from v1_6_8 back to v1_6_6. However, logTool seemed to work ok despite this. Using iop v3_113_2 (the wrong iop) we ran checkBias on both a normal (tbars latched) doghouse bias and on a tbars unlatched doghouse bias. The results are given below: tbars latched doghouse bias im> checkBias 3986 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809 -doghouse -astro {12 WARN: rightBiasVector} {12 FAIL: } {22 WARN: rightBiasVector} {22 FAIL: } {52 WARN: leftBiasVector rightBiasVector} {52 FAIL: } {53 WARN: leftBiasVector rightBiasVector} {53 FAIL: } {56 WARN: rightBiasVector} {56 FAIL: } {81 WARN: leftRNComp rightRNComp } {81 FAIL: } {81 WARN: leftRNComp rightRNComp } {81 FAIL: } {photo h1} {astro h2} im> We visually inspected both the photo and astro mosaics and both looked reasonable to the eye. We then ran iop v3_116_0 (the right iop for this task) on both of the biases and got the following: tbars latched doghouse bias im> checkBias 3986 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809 checkBias WARNING: QA bias vectors for run 3986 already exist, appending the current time to filenames {81 WARN: leftRNComp rightRNComp } {81 FAIL: } checkBias WARNING: outfile /data/photo/cmr/52809/idMosaic-003986-0025.fit already exists, appending the current time to filename checkBias WARNING: outfile /data/photo/cmr/52809/idMosaicAstro-003986-0025.fit already exists, appending the current time to filename Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-u-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-g-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-r-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-i-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-z-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-o-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-l-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-t-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/52809/3986-25-s-bias.gif/gif {photo h1} {astro h2} im> Visual inspection of both mosaics showed everything to be okay. We do not know if plotBiasvec should work under this new version of iop or not (i.e., was plotBiasvec removed or is this a bug?). We then obtained LED flats and ran checkLED. Note that checkLED did not work unless we specified an output directory: im> checkLED 3988 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809 Error: dies not exist im> tb dies not exist while executing "error "$outputDir dies not exist"" invoked from within \042if {![file exists $outputDir]} { error "$outputDir dies not exist" }\042 (procedure "checkLED" line 61) invoked from within "checkLED 3988 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809" It then failed because it had more than one bias vector (because we had run checkBias two times on each of two biases): im> checkLED 3988 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809 -outputDir /data/photo/cmr/52809 57 Error: more than one bias vector for ccd r1 found in /data/photo/cmr/52809 im> We then made a subdirectory in /data/photo/cmr/52809 called 52809a and did getAllFrames 3987 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809/52809a checkBias 3987 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809/52809a getAllFrames 3988 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809/52809a checkLED 3988 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809/52809a -outputDir /data/photo/cmr/52809/52809a At first there was a permissions problem because one of us had run the getAllFrames command and the other tried to run checkLED and it failed. We ran it using /data/photo/cmr/52809 as the input directory. It did not require the -outputDir option, it did not fail due to multiple bias vectors and it did not have the permissions problem like v3_116_0 did: im> checkLED 3988 25 /data/photo/cmr/52809 0 im> The plotFlatvec command worked fine using v3_113_2. The relevant files for the imaging checks were copied to landru and compressed. The same files are still on sdsshost but will be deleted as soon as the watcher complains about disk space. We examined and discussed the new Apache Wheel document. Emails regarding tactics and record keeping of what's been observed were sent to Scot Kleinman and Pete Newman. There was a windscreen touch: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: DOWN (2003-06-19 05:51:40Z sdssmcp): 2003-06-19 05:51:58Z). There were also these reports of axes aborts: azimuth (ABORT_EVENT: 2003-06-19 06:15:07Z) rotator (ABORT_EVENT: 2003-06-19 06:15:07Z) The number of tpm errors seemed to decrease as we only had 1 tonight. However, since we did not get on the sky tonight we will not yet declare iop v3_113_2 current. Clouds kept us closed all night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3986 00:25Z 00:39Z 100 O -17.78 -14.23 38 ignore 3987 02:27Z 02:45Z 100 O 12.97 17.35 43 bias in doghouse, tbars unlatched 3988 06:11Z 06:30Z 100 O 69.18 73.73 44 calibration LED Flats ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): NO UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21425, plate -9999 ------- 22:47 21425 0.0 bias ----- sequence 21426, plate 1371 ------- 02:15 21426 10.0 flat 02:18 21427 2.0 arc 02:31 21428 2.1 arc 02:33 21429 2.1 arc 02:47 21430 2.1 arc 02:50 21431 2.1 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6487 - JL6492, JL6499 Stays: JL6493 - JL6498, JL6500 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:53Z 60 41 10 196 (SSW) 657 - mcl 23:25Z 62 39 14 191 (S) 693 - " 23:57Z 64 38 9 260 (W) 655 - " 00:30Z 59 38 6 263 (W) 586 - tcl, rain, lightning 01:03Z 58 40 8 214 (SW) 693 - " " " 01:35Z 50 43 16 14 (NNE) 2039 - " " " 02:07Z 46 44 17 26 (NNE) 1492 - " " " 02:39Z 49 38 1 74 (ENE) 1010 - " " " 03:28Z 51 39 7 9 (N) 895 - tcl, lightning 04:00Z 51 37 4 13 (NNE) 670 - tcl 04:32Z 54 35 19 280 (W) 815 - " 05:04Z 52 37 9 287 (WNW) 797 - " 05:41Z 48 41 2 265 (W) 991 - " 06:13Z 51 37 10 316 (NW) 574 - mcl 06:49Z 55 33 12 262 (W) 927 - " 07:22Z 53 36 7 251 (WSW) 804 - " 07:54Z 51 37 6 184 (S) 773 - " 08:26Z 50 38 7 181 (S) 821 - " 08:58Z 50 38 11 178 (S) 856 - " 09:31Z 50 40 14 178 (S) 954 - " 10:03Z 50 42 14 176 (S) 749 - " 10:35Z 49 42 14 169 (S) 770 - pcl [pmt]cl = partly, mostly, totally cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Never opened (clouds all night, some rain and lightning early on).
