APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday June 20, 2003 (MJD 52811) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Steph Snedden night: Mike Harvanek Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaged 28 S from lambda 29.4 to 56.5. Did not finish any plates but got good data for plates 1371, 1023 and 1034. Finished all standard on-sky shake items. Checked the DIMM pointing and found it to be not so good. Ran using the new fiducial tables with the old pointing model - pointing was good for imaging and okay for spectroscopy. Had trouble with the telescope balance both for imaging and spectroscopy. Has anything changed on the telescope that would alter the balance? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- swing shift: ============ Afternoon checkout went without problems. Spectro focus checked and no adjustments were needed. night: ====== We opened at sunset to a mostly clear but hazy sky. Although we did not obtain a pointing model during shakedown, we decided to try to run the telescope with the new fiducial tables. Plate 1371 (cartridge 3): No guide stars on the gotoField. We had just acquired an FK5 star and ``stickyed'' the offsets when we had to close for dust. We recorded the offsets in the log. We had a windscreen touch when closing: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-06-21 02:56:00Z sdssmcp): 2003-06-21 02:56:05Z) The dust abated and we opened again at 0355Z and proceeded with plate 1371. Plate 1371 (cartridge 3): Using the new offsets there were guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 2 exposures (1500 s total) and a smear before the plate's availability expired. While plate 1371 was being observed by Atsuko, Steph and Mike worked on DIMM. DIMM pointing was checked using both a 1 star alignment and 2 star alignment. Neither alignment gave us a successful pointing at a target star (i.e., the pointing was not good). Steph will check the DIMM alignment manual to see if something was missed. The sky was photometric and seeing was good so we switched to imaging. With the imager mounted, the telescope balance seemed to be a little off. At counterweight settings of both 720 (upper limit) and 705, the altitude motor current was about 3000 when the telescope was moving up and about -1000 when the telescope was moving down. Has something changed on the telescope that would cause this? Run 3992, 28 S: Good from frame 19, lambda = 29.4. Official moonrise at frame 183, lambda=54.06 but data are probably good to the end (frame 199, lambda 56.5). Good seeing and pointing throughout. Since the pointing was good for imaging (see skippy results) and okay for spectroscopy, perhaps we can get by for this run using the current (=old) pointing model and the new fiducial tables? Run 3993, donuts: In focus = frame 11 +300 = frame 15 -300 = frame 20 By-eye, the collimation looks okay to us but perhaps someone else should have a look at these donut frames to verify this. They can be found in the usual place (/data/photo/optics/52811). Run 3994, on-telescope bias. Imaging QA check done on the bias. After the moon came up we switched to spectroscopy. The telescope balance again appeared to be off. Normal counterweight position for spectroscopy is between 270 and 290. The current position of 240 seems to be more appropriate. Has something changed? Plate 1023 (cartridge 4): Needed an FK5 to acquire the guide stars. The first exposure did not get enough signal to noise to be useful. Poor seeing and a mistyped exposure time (600 s instead of 900 s) were the problem. This exposure was declared bad. Two good exposures (2400 s total) were obtained. The smear was not good, probably due to sky brightness and was declared bad. Plate 1343 (cartridge 9): Guide stars on the gotoField. We got 1 good exposure (1200 s) before the sky became too bright. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3991 22:50Z 23:12Z 100 O -39.50 -33.91 46 ignore 3992 05:30Z 07:25Z 28 S 27.68 56.65 207 science good data 3993 07:26Z 07:37Z 28 S 56.96 59.68 31 engineering donuts 3994 07:39Z 07:56Z 100 O 93.09 97.38 43 bias on-telescope ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- See the main log. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3992 13 4 55 -7.100 0.746 7.600 0.191 -0.00018 293 70 3992 24 4 56 -7.300 0.183 7.000 0.168 0.00190 291 70 3992 76 4 70 -8.500 0.185 3.900 0.132 0.00272 280 71 3992 129 4 85 -5.800 0.535 0.700 0.377 0.00242 267 70 3992 180 4 78 -5.100 0.192 -1.500 0.129 0.00296 256 68 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3992 34 1 70 252 17 -0.886 0.195 -2.703 0.165 0.00909 3992 34 1 70 252 13 -0.489 0.250 -2.494 0.125 0.00838 3992 34 1 70 252 14 0.179 0.179 -2.397 0.168 0.00806 3992 34 1 70 252 14 0.591 0.173 -2.439 0.176 0.00820 3992 34 1 70 252 15 0.862 0.222 -2.585 0.234 0.00869 3992 52 1 71 256 11 -0.253 1.408 -3.625 2.042 0.01219 3992 52 1 71 256 23 -0.207 0.183 -2.839 0.190 0.00955 3992 52 1 71 256 14 0.302 0.185 -2.777 0.229 0.00933 3992 52 1 71 256 7 0.839 0.321 -2.790 0.213 0.00938 3992 52 1 71 256 16 1.304 0.264 -2.743 0.217 0.00922 3992 85 1 71 264 13 0.202 0.232 -3.207 0.070 0.01078 3992 85 1 71 264 22 0.869 0.225 -3.107 0.133 0.01044 3992 85 1 71 264 24 1.263 0.231 -3.180 0.144 0.01069 3992 85 1 71 264 28 1.821 0.173 -3.059 0.185 0.01028 3992 85 1 71 264 13 2.405 0.131 -3.097 0.206 0.01041 3992 104 1 70 268 20 -0.214 0.205 -3.155 0.152 0.01061 3992 104 1 70 268 35 0.352 0.162 -3.164 0.165 0.01064 3992 104 1 70 268 26 1.176 0.127 -3.168 0.201 0.01065 3992 104 1 70 268 21 1.534 0.207 -3.054 0.187 0.01027 3992 104 1 70 268 20 2.109 0.139 -3.215 0.186 0.01081 3992 138 1 69 276 27 0.783 0.127 -2.785 0.176 0.00936 3992 138 1 69 276 30 1.188 0.142 -2.742 0.235 0.00922 3992 138 1 69 276 36 1.796 0.157 -2.722 0.216 0.00915 3992 138 1 69 276 13 2.341 0.221 -2.873 0.302 0.00966 3992 138 1 69 276 22 2.819 0.208 -2.909 0.294 0.00978 3992 156 1 68 280 42 0.925 0.169 -2.520 0.180 0.00847 3992 156 1 68 280 32 1.574 0.179 -2.523 0.145 0.00848 3992 156 1 68 280 22 2.146 0.184 -2.496 0.162 0.00839 3992 156 1 68 280 29 2.558 0.242 -2.348 0.151 0.00789 3992 156 1 68 280 24 3.120 0.143 -2.322 0.139 0.00781 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21442, plate 1371 ------- 22:58 21442 10.0 flat 23:00 21443 2.0 arc 23:14 21444 2.1 arc 23:16 21445 2.1 arc ----- sequence 21446, plate -9999 ------- 01:48 21446 0.0 bias ----- sequence 21447, plate 1371 ------- 02:05 21447 0.0 bias ----- sequence 21447, plate 1371 ------- 11.5 9.2 10.4 9.7 04:16 21448 10.0 flat 04:18 21449 2.0 arc 04:33 21450 600.1 target 04:52 21451 900.1 target 05:00 21452 240.0 smear ----- sequence 21453, plate 1023 ------- 8.2 9.6 7.4 10.3 08:34 21453 10.0 flat 08:37 21454 2.0 arc 08:51 21455 600.1 target low s/n;
