APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 3, 2003 (MJD 52886) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Jurek Krzesinski, Atsuko Nitta Support: Russel Owen, Larry Carey, Hercules Visitors: Suzanne Hawlet, John Bochanski, Marcel Aueros, Lucianne Walkowicz, Nicole Silvestri, Stephanie Morris, Daryl Haggard, Mark Claire, AND Larey Carey, AND Russell Owen and & Diane & Elanor Sandwick (ALL from U. Washington - who's left watching the fort?) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished the two plates (1497, 1407) that already had some data from previous nights. We had clouds when the wind was calm and high wind when the sky was clear. We saw M2 oscillations which was witnessed by Russell Owen, Larry Carey and Hercules. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: The altitude axis had a fiducial error of ~700 counts on first slews, but this was fixed using standard procedures and did not reoccur. Spectrographs focus were checked and found to be good (Tamb ~14C). Guider software on the Macintosh computer was stopped. It was restarted (but the computer was not rebooted) and all was well. Was this from testing the returned and repaired engineering camera, perhaps? Most of UW are here, and got a tour. Night: 07:15Z Opened. Cart 7 Plate 1407 Starts on gotoField. plateID in the header has the correct info tonight! We finished this plate with one exposure (plus the ones from last night). Cartidge 2 Plate 1424 03:04Z We could not see the guide stars very well when we went to the field. We fk5ed and 0.1s exposure image showed the star looked like a streak. The oscillation is much faster than 5Hz. gimg0100.fits is a sample of guider image that shows the fk5 streak image with 0.1s exposure time. M2 seems to be oscillating. We decided to home the M2 and moved back to the field. Homeing nor slewing did not help. By now, Russel O., Larry and Hercules were in the control room to help us. From the strip chart and the galil number displayed in TPM, all three axis were oscillating. The amplitude were large in order of axis A, C and B. They wanted to check if they can hear the M2 moving like crazy. So we issed a track command to move the telescope down and that stopped the oscillations. Looking at the TPM www archive plots, the worst (largest) peak-to-peak amplitudes of the oscillations were: A ~50,000 B < ~20,000 C ~50,000 I created PS files of the TPM www archive plots and they are on my sdsshost home directory. The file names are the time span used to for the plot. For instance 03020304.ps has x-axis 03:02Z to 03:04Z. These plots will be good for quick look at the amplitude, but not for the time resolution as it does not plot anything shorter than 1s time scale. I copied over the gimp0100.fits image (0.1s gcam image of an FK5 star) in case someone is interested. By now, the plate optimal observing time expired, so we went to the next cartridge. 03:56Z Cartridge 9 Plate 1029 We fk5ed to find the field. Scot noticed that the lava lamp was not on at this time which explains all the problems we have had tonight. The clouds thickened during our first science exposure.... Then it started to become windy. The first science exposure did not get S/N^2>=2. 05:40Z The wind became too high and we closed although we left the fans on and the doors cracked. 08:00Z We open again. The wind is below closure limit, but the clouds are with us again. So we start with spectro. Cartridge 1 Plate 1091 stars on gotoField but we lost stars to clouds. before we could even finish setting up. 09:30Z The clouds thinned enough for us to see guide stars again. Since plate 1091 will expire in less an hour and we will not be able to finish this plate with the efficiency we got, we decided to mount cartridge 6 plate 1497 which has exposures from two previous night and finish this plate off while we can. Cartridge 6 Plate 1497 stars on gotoField. Efficiency is 35% as we start our science exposure. We either had clouds or poor seeing while we tried to finish this plate. With the exposure from two nights ago, we finished this plate. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4096 23:37Z 00:02Z 100 O 46.29 52.46 55 ignore doghouse ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22230, plate -9999 ------- 23:39 22230 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22230, plate 1497 ------- 23:52 22231 2.1 arc 23:54 22232 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22233, plate -9999 ------- 01:01 22233 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22234, plate 1407 ------- 3.9 4.2 4.5 4.4 02:28 22234 10.0 flat 02:30 22235 2.0 arc 02:49 22236 900.1 target 02:57 22237 240.0 smear ----- sequence 22238, plate 1029 ------- 4.6 4.8 5.5 5.5 04:14 22238 10.0 flat 04:16 22239 2.0 arc 04:55 22240 1800.1 target 05:28 22241 1800.1 target ----- sequence 22242, plate 1497 ------- 9.8 16.0 12.7 13.2 09:46 22242 10.0 flat 09:49 22243 2.0 arc 10:20 22244 1500.1 target 10:48 22245 1500.1 target 11:16 22246 1500.1 target 11:24 22247 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:32Z 9 1029 32.37 0.0016 52.63 -0.0024 206.68 0.0000 0.999900 10:00Z 6 1497 -22.55 0.0038 55.14 -0.0005 161.12 0.0012 1.000050 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6682 Stays: JL6683 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:31Z 9 1029 0.99990 986 1740 -250 33 52.6 11.8 20 78 gdr 2.3 09:59Z 6 1497 1.00005 -493 586 -170 -23 55.1 9.7 11 75 -/- 2.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:35Z 61 43 1 187 (S) 238 - 23:08Z 63 40 4 43 (NE) 242 - 23:38Z 62 38 0 124 (SE) 248 - 00:09Z 62 39 4 81 (E) 249 - 00:40Z 59 40 9 58 (ENE) 266 - 01:13Z 58 40 10 50 (NE) 266 - 02:45Z 55 39 16 60 (ENE) 284 - 03:16Z 54 40 20 65 (ENE) 349 - 03:48Z 53 39 21 71 (ENE) 392 - 04:21Z 53 40 18 74 (ENE) 397 - 04:54Z 53 39 34 76 (ENE) 403 - 05:27Z 53 39 32 70 (ENE) 368 - 05:57Z 53 38 31 71 (ENE) 366 - 06:27Z 52 38 33 72 (ENE) 316 - 06:57Z 51 39 30 73 (ENE) 326 - 07:27Z 50 41 26 73 (ENE) 376 - 07:58Z 49 41 19 69 (ENE) 365 - 08:28Z 48 42 13 55 (NE) 347 - 08:59Z 49 42 20 74 (ENE) 353 - 09:31Z 49 41 15 46 (NE) 394 - 10:02Z 49 41 14 74 (ENE) 329 - 10:33Z 49 41 12 40 (NE) 373 - 11:03Z 49 42 21 59 (ENE) 401 - 11:34Z 49 41 17 65 (ENE) 339 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:00Z Fans on, louvres open 01:00Z Doors open 01:15Z Enclosure off 05:40Z Enclosure on 08:00Z Enclosure off 11:30Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off.
