APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 18, 2003 (MJD 52992) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Dan Long Steph Snedden Support: Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A night of spectroscopy. Hyades plate, two merged plates and two survey plates completed. Plate 1666 from last night declared done. 6 to plug. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: -------------------- Spectro (sp2 only) was focused; see problems for details. Night: -------------------- A lot of high cloud, so we set up for spectroscopy. ----- 00:40Z Cartridge 3, plate 1485. Needed an offset of 17 asec east, 5 asec N (from cleared offsets). We are set up well before twilight ends. Finished this plate with a total exposure time of 3300 s. 02:40Z We had a backplane communications error...the 3rd in two days. We lost the last exposure on cartridge 3 (but still had enough signal from previous exposures to declare it done). Craig was notified. Frame renumbering went without problems. Details are in the problems section. ----- 03:03Z Cartridge 7, plate 1510. Needed an FK5. This plate has a guide star cut-out for SAOmon that is too close to the window edge, so the simple form of SAOMon had to be used. This plate was declared done witha total exposure time of 3600 s. 04:00Z Dan's window manager (FVWM) got very confused, putting all virtual desktop windows onto one desktop...very cluttered. We consulted with Craig before starting a new FVWM session. The session was restored, but not the multiple desktops. Dan was able to work within the clutter. ----- 04:35Z Cartridge 5, plate 1637 - Hyades plate After loading the correct plugmap file (plPlugMapM-1637-52992-01.par) we disabled fibers 1,2,4,6,7,9 and took 1 exposure of 1200 s and 3 of 900 s each. We then proceeded to pointing two (plPlugMapM-1637-52992-02.par), following the proceedure with the exception of modifying the velocity offset commands (see the notes at the bottom of the log for the commands used). We obtained four exposures at the second pointing, using the suggested scan times. Clouds thickened before the third pointing, so a command decision was made to slow down the scan rate, to get more signal. Instead of a 2 second scan across the fibers, we did 4 seconds. Inspection of the images showed we were getting very low flux (about 200 ADU above background). On the third exposure, we went to an 8 second scan. These fluxes looked better. Finally, we did two 16 second scans, with counts anwhere from 200 - almost 4000 above the background. Hopefully, these will give good enough S/N in spite of the clouds. Dan's complete set of notes on the Hyades plate exposures are at the end of the log. Jeff Munn, if you want to look at any of the guider frames when stars were crossing fibers during offset scans, the guider image numbers are in Dan's notes as well. Also look at the spectro summary section of the log for more details. ----- 08:44Z Cartridge 4, plate 1594 - Survey plate Son-of-Spectro took a reeeeaaaallllyyy long time to display results for the science exposures for this plate. Nothing was reduced until after the post-cal, yet nothing was wrong with the pre-cal. Perhaps this was a residual problem from the Hyades plate being too odd for SoS to deal with. We took our best guess at what would be a good total exposure time, and did a post-cal for safety. We wound up with (S/N)^2 approx. 20, so our conservatism allowed us to declare this plate done, though we wasted five minutes on the post-cal. Total exposure time: 4800 s. ----- 10:39Z Cartridge 2, plate 1431 - Survey plate GSOGTF. We had the same problem with SoS not displaying the results for the science exposures right away. As soon as we started a post-cal, the science exposure results appeared. We appear to have uncovered an arcane bug. Does Son-of-Spectro think there is no pre-cal? Completed in a total exposureof 4800s. After getting feedback from Jim Annis via Atsuko, we declared plate 1666 done (it was observed most recently last night). At the end of the night, Dan's X session froze just after starting endNight. We waited for the emails from endNight and for the drives lights to stop blinking as evidence that endNight finished properly. Then after endNight finished, Dan's X session came back to life. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4330 21:55Z 22:09Z 100 O 125.18 128.74 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):partially UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23937, plate -9999 ------- 21:54 23937 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23938, plate 1304 ------- 23:07 23938 0.0 bias 23:11 23939 10.0 flat 23:14 23940 2.0 arc spectro focus check 23:17 23941 2.1 arc 23:20 23942 2.1 arc 23:32 23943 10.0 flat 23:34 23944 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23945, plate -9999 ------- 00:13 23945 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23946, plate 1485 ------- 20.9 13.9 20.7 15.0 00:17 23946 0.0 bias 01:08 23947 10.0 flat 01:11 23948 2.0 arc 01:31 23949 900.1 target 01:53 23950 1200.1 target 02:16 23951 1200.1 target backplane communications problem lost a fourth exposure ----- sequence 23953, plate 1485 ------- 02:45 23953 0.0 bias post-cals for above science frames 02:49 23954 10.0 flat 02:51 23955 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23956, plate 1510 ------- 29.2 17.3 30.4 17.8 03:10 23956 10.0 flat 03:13 23957 2.0 arc 03:36 23958 1200.1 target 03:59 23959 1200.1 target 04:28 23960 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23961, plate 1637 -------29.8 46.5 67.8 523.9 04:49 23961 10.0 flat 04:52 23962 2.0 arc 05:15 23963 1200.1 target Hyades plate 05:33 23964 900.1 target pointing 1 05:51 23965 900.1 target 06:09 23966 900.1 target 06:12 23967 10.0 flat 06:14 23968 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23969, plate 1 ------- Note the plate id is 1 (?) 06:29 23969 10.0 flat 06:31 23970 2.0 arc 06:42 23971 300.1 target Hyades plate 06:51 23972 300.1 target pointing 2 07:00 23973 300.1 target 07:09 23974 300.1 target 07:13 23975 10.0 flat 07:16 23976 2.0 arc 07:22 23977 22.1 target 07:25 23978 22.1 target No sky line frames 07:29 23979 22.1 target 07:32 23980 10.0 flat 07:35 23981 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23982, plate 2 ------- Note plate id is 2 (?) 07:45 23982 10.0 flat 07:47 23983 2.0 arc 07:58 23984 300.1 target Hyades plate 08:08 23985 300.1 target pointing 3 08:17 23986 300.1 target 08:26 23987 300.1 target 08:30 23988 10.0 flat 08:32 23989 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23990, plate 1594 ------- 32.9 19.4 37.8 21.9 08:50 23990 10.0 flat 08:52 23991 2.0 arc 09:15 23992 1200.1 target 09:38 23993 1200.1 target 10:01 23994 1200.1 target 10:23 23995 1200.1 target 10:26 23996 10.0 flat 10:29 23997 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23998, plate 1431 ------- 26.2 16.0 28.2 17.2 10:41 23998 10.0 flat 10:43 23999 2.0 arc 11:06 24000 1200.1 target 11:29 24001 1200.1 target 11:52 24002 1200.1 target 11:55 24003 10.0 flat 11:57 24004 2.0 arc 12:20 24005 1200.1 target 12:30 24006 10.0 flat 12:32 24007 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:06Z 3 1485 -12.29 0.0080 56.72 0.0010 169.62 0.0084 0.999950 03:08Z 7 1510 20.13 0.0050 55.57 -0.0007 196.75 -0.0088 0.999860 04:47Z 5 1637 40.14 0.0059 69.84 0.0002 214.39 -0.0058 0.999990 09:03Z 4 1594 103.12 0.0033 67.18 0.0029 -92.41 -0.0124 1.000210 11:00Z 2 1431 143.29 0.0027 74.49 0.0038 -44.88 0.0089 1.000290 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7103 Stays: JL7104 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:06Z 3 1485 0.99995 494 1670 100 -12 56.7 5.1 12 358 -
