APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 30, 2004 (MJD 53035) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Atsuko Nitta John Barentine ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakeup and Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 3 plates done, a rebuilt world worked once the PLC sdss.csv file was corrected with the right version number, but a watcher bug was revealed. About 3hrs of North survey imaging. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Day: Az alignment pointer about 1/2 tick out. Imager dewar needed swapping at the start of the night (~101lb) and the compressed Nitrogen bottle was completely empty. We replaced it as well and it went down a bit right away, but remained stable the rest of the night. Night ------- We are Stephless. So no spectro collimation check was done. 00:45Z Opened with cart 1. It is very moony tonight. GSOTGTF (although last night's offsets for this cart were entered first.) Tonight is actually shakeup, but my auto-email reminders were only set for one year at a time (very sorry), so did not get sent out. We had no requests. So, we decided to try spectroscopy and see if we could discover what was wrong with rebuilding the world. The former was rendered difficult by moonlight, the latter was easily found: no one had bothered to update the Version number in the sdss.csv file - a 30s fix whose absence wasted Dan's entire day and a few hours of my evening tonight. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN CHECKING IN NEW PLCs TO GET THIS STUFF RIGHT! It seems every time we have a new problem which usually requires Robert or me to intervene and fix. (Except, sjnk does not have check_access permission for the PLC product, so I called Jon and had him make the correction so I could continue with the world reconstruction.) 02:49Z: we're getting nothing on this plate, so we switch to cart 5, plate 1735. GSOTGTF- after clearing previous offsets. 05:14Z: We managed to finish this plate despite the excessive moonlight, and went on to cart 8 plate 1276 to see if we could finish it as well. We took advantage of the light shake and bright moon to spend some additional time training John while observing. We finished this plate, and took the opportunity to test the newly-rebuilt world software and a few other things. With the new software, the PLC mismatch in the mcpMenu goes away, but now the watcher says PLC: ??? on the main interlocks display. I traced this down and this PLC: version# feature was added 8Jan and uses an IOP command which does not exist in the watcher -hence the ???. I filed a PR with the appropriate info. Someone had also checked in a .par file which says that fiber 11 in cart 6 is disabled. We tested that and indeed it works. Atsuko also disabled a guiderFiber using the disableFiber command and indeed, the guiderOutput said it was disabled and no FWHM/etc. info. was displayed at that fiber on the guiderMon display (with the gGuider). We confirmed that the new guider still doesn't like cartridge 6- even with the .par file change, giving us a long error when taking a guiderFlat. 09:28Z: We finished this plate and seeing as how it was photometric, decided to mount the imager while the moon was setting, so we'd be ready when the moon was down. 09:37Z we started with 25S at lambda=-25, with hopes of starting science by -30. Run 4392. skippy worked right away (!) - pointing and focus good by ~frame 20, lambda~-32. 09:51Z: Nu error exceed 8" (8.1) for the skippy run on frames 24-28. BTW: sometime relatively early in the night, the DIMM stopped doing something right -the WWW page had lots of error messages. Looks like it lost connection to the CCD. We could not get it back by telling it to connect. nuErr fell below 8.0" by the frame 176 skippy. 12:36Z we stopped the run for twilight at frame 316; lambda~12. 12:40Z: we started a donut run- run 4393 - first frames (incl. frame 10) in focus, -300 at frame 15, +300 at frame 19. 12:47Z run 4394 - on-telescope bias 13:41Z We replaced the low spectro dewar before retiring for the night (day?). endNight was still running as this log was sent. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
