APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday February 26, 2004 (MJD 53062) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Mike Harvanek Howard Brewington John Barentine French (on site) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The following plates were declared done: 1746, 1605, 1445, 1365, 1372, and 1461. We lost about 45 minutes with cartridge 09; see log for details. And, we spent about an hour with cartridge 06 doing starPattern, computeFiberAngles, and so on. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Normal afternoon check, except that full collimation for sp1 was required due to work during the day. During the day the sp1 collimator was disassembled inspected and several parts tightened (likely fixing a long standing problem), so a full collimation checkout was needed. See problem section for details of collimation. This error popped up when logTool was started. The logTool window still came up, but it didn't collect any of the usual data. Quitting logTool and restarting worked. See problems section for traceback. expected unsigned time but got "-2077921270" Night: ------ We had clouds and moon at twilight, so spectro was our choice. Just before opening, we helped French make some final adjustments to the slitheads of cartridge 06. If we get a chance to observe with this cartridge, we will need to do a starPattern, computeFiberAngles, and so on because the guide fibers were recently replaced. 01:47Z Cart 04, Plate 1636 (photoz79). Field found with Fk5 and some fishing. We completed two exposures on this plate but, unfortunately, captured no usable singal because of the moon and thin clouds. 03:00Z Cart 05, Plate 1154 was scheduled for this timeframe, but we chose to skip it because this plate was an fstar-type. Consequently, there's not way to finish it before the end of the darkrun. So, we moved on to Cart 07. 03:10Z Cart 07, Plate 1746 (chunk90). Guide stars on goToField, but clouds quickly became a problem in that part of the sky. After about fifty minutes, however, the clouds cleared enough for us to get setup to do this plate. This plate was declared done after three exposures 05:50Z Cart 08, Plate 1605 (chunk77). Guide stars on goToField. This is the plate from last night, which we completed three exposures. However, we could not determine if the second and third exposures were good. We did two more exposures tonight. We were able to declare this plate done by adding tonight's S/N^2 to last night's. 06:55Z Cart 03, Plate 1445 (chunk77). An Fk5 star was used to locate the field. Plate declared done in three exposures. 08:12Z Cart 01, Plate 1365 (chunk68). An Fk5 star was used to locate the field. Plate declared done in three exposures. 10:02Z Cart 09, Plate 1372 (chunk68). Guide stars on goToField. We lost about 45 minutes with this cartridge. The trunions were left in the CG position after the fiber bundle was re-glued. Consequently, we could not place the cartridge on the L-cart because we reached the arm's lower limit first. And, this cartridge was also placed in the cartridge bay backwards after the re-glue repair. Plate declared done in three exposures. 11:00Z Cart 02 Plate 1461 (chunk68). Guide stars on goToFild. We declared this plate done after one exposure when we added tonight's SN^2 to a previous night's. 11:49Z Cart 06, Plate 1379 (chunk69). The guide fibers were recently replaced in the cartridge. Guide stars on goToField. We did not capture any signal on this plate; however, we spent our time trying to center the guide stars using offset adjustments. Next, we did the starPattern and computeFiberAngle commands. We issued these commands four times and the following output was the result.
