APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday March 17, 2004 (MJD 53082) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski Jon Brinkmann (support) Craig Loomis (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Sagittarius scan from approximately 07:20 LST to 09:12 LST (including ramps). 25 N from lambda -63 to -48.5; however the pointing is uncertain because we could not get skippy to run. Could someone please have a look ASAP. 25 N from lambda -48 to -21 25 N from lambda 45.8 to 57.7 Finished 1 plate (1465). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- We did a spectro flat and arc and all xsigma and wsigma values were in the black. Since we were short of time and expected to be imaging all night we did not do a full-blown collimation check. While mounting the imager we discovered the NE primary latch green indicator lamp on the instrument change panel would not light. We could hear the latch engaging and the red lamp went off but the green lamp did not come on. Jon Brinkmann was notified. He adjusted the latch indicator and solved the problem. Night: ------ Photometric and moonless so we began with imaging. Run 4515: Bias on the telescope. Run 4516: The last 1.5 or so hours of the Sagittarius Scan (approximately 07:20 LST to 09:12 LST). We used sidt0 = 7 and phi0 = 90. The track commands used were TRACK 122.00000, 35.00000 FK5 /SCANVELOCITY=(0.00417807,0.00000000) /rota=0 /rotty=obj /keep=(boresight) offset boresight 0.10488,0.,0.,0./pabsolute /wait The seeing was good from the 1st frame (8). The focus was good starting at frame 15 but since the seeing was in spec from the beginning, the first few frames are probably still good. Frame 15 corresponds to a siderial time of approximately 07:23 LST and so the scan began at approximately 07:20 LST. IDL Skippy results were as follows: SKIPPY: Working on file idGang-004516-c6-0029.fit ASTROM_ENGINE: XYSHIFT: 32.3603 -115.068 pix ASTROM_TWEAK: Too few matches; returning original GSA ASTROM_TWEAK: Too few matches; returning original GSA ASTROM_ENGINE: Number of catalog matches = 3 ASTROM_ENGINE: WARNING: XY shift FAILED in astrom_tweak ASTROM_ENGINE: XYSHIFT: 44.2199 85.6467 pix ASTROM_ENGINE: Number of catalog matches = 9 ASTROM_ENGINE: Initial guess rotated by: 0.47920218 deg ASTROM_ENGINE: RA offset = 3.9819113 arcsec ASTROM_ENGINE: DEC offset = 2.9260530 arcsec ASTROM_ENGINE: X offset = -7.6515949 pix ASTROM_ENGINE: Y offset = -6.2742232 pix FILENAME MU ROT_ERROR NU_ERROR ------------------------- ----------- ----------- ----------- idGang-004516-c3-0029.fit 126.52 0.014992 3.6386 idGang-004516-c4-0029.fit 126.52 0.024417 3.5693 SKIPPY: NODE = 32 [deg] SKIPPY: INCL = 35 [deg] SKIPPY: XBORE = -22.7402 [mm] = 0.104880 [deg] ------------------------------------------------- SKIPPY: Median rotator offset = 0.0244169 [deg] SKIPPY: Median nu error = 3.63860 [arcsec] The rotator offset and nu error were acceptable but we'll have to wait for the reduction folks to confirm the pointing. We ended the scan (frame 199) at 09:12 LST (2 degrees past 0900). Run 4517: 25 N, start lambda -67, end lambda -46.35 Seeing and focus were good from the beginning but the rotator didn't stop moving until frame 10 (lambda -66.6). However, we couldn't get skippy to run. See the Problems section for details. We tried skippy on different frames. We tried skippy from iop and astrom. We saw the gang files being transferred. It just wouldn't work. We got ltMatch to run and it told us the rotator offset was acceptable but we still have no info on nuErr. We tried skyGang but it failed as well telling us: Error: Syntax Error: unprocessed command line parameters remain (check for extra parameters or invalid options) ftclParseArg: Error parsing the command After much debate, we stopped this drift at lambda -46.35 (frame 145) when the seeing threatened to go bad. We hope the pointing is good enough. Please let us know as soon as you find out. Note that the beginning lambda listed for this run in the imaging Summary section is huge (-10184.00). Could this have anything to do with skippy failing? Run 4518: 25 N, start lambda -50, end lambda -18.8 In the hope that the pointing for the previous drift was good enough, we started this drift so as to overlap the previous one. Before starting this drift we issued an offset /pabs command in tcc several times to ensure that the offsets were indeed cleared. Seeing, focus and skippy all were good by frame 10 (lambda -50). We still don't know why skippy wouldn't run on the previous run. Corrupted files? Skippy bug? Wayward pointing? We ended the drift at frame 219 (lamda -18.8). The entire run was good. Run 4519: 25 N, wrong starting lambda Run 4520: 25 N, start lambda 45.8, end lambda 69 Focus, seeing and skippy all good by frame 10 (lambda 45.8). The seeing went bad around frame 90 (lambda 57.7). We waited about half an hour for the seeing to improve. Just as we were about to give up the seeing started downward. We waited for another 15 minutes or so but the seeing never improved enough to become acceptable and we ended the drift at frame 165 (lambda 69). There was less than 2 hours before twilight and not enough time to get rim and a spoke so we switched to spectroscopy. While checking the balance after changing instruments there was a slip on alt 1 (around 10:10Z). The slip detector was reset and we proceeded with spectroscopy. Plate 1379 (cartridge 6): We could not find an fk5 star using a spiral pattern with 2 laps. We gave up on this plate and tried another. Plate 1465 (cartridge 2): FK5 needed to acquire the field. Finished this plate in 3 exposures (2400 sec total). The call for a postCal came too late. endNight is still running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4514 00:10Z 00:25Z 100 O -112.40 -108.70 39 ignore 4515 01:57Z 02:15Z 100 O -85.64 -80.91 41 bias on telescope 4516 02:36Z 04:32Z 100 N -75.74 -46.76 207 science Sag. scan 4517 04:35Z 05:59Z 25 N -10184.00 -45.91 153 science skippyless 25 N Note the huge beginning lambda in 4517!
