APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 19, 2004 (MJD 53115) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Jurek Krzesinski Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- High dust counts (close to closing conditions all night, but low humidity). Could we please have the mirrors CO2 cleaned? The skies were clear, but seeing was variable, so we stayed with spectroscopy. Six plates finished before WSIGMA on r1 went out of spec. Grrr. We probably could have finished seven plates if this had not happened. Howard, Could you please home M2 during the afternoon? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing -------- During the afternoon checkout, I needed to reboot photo 1 because the tapes (id1-1 and id1-2) would not load. I checked the spectro focus and found it to be within spec. Night -------- During opening, the Southwest building pin was jammed, and the building had to be nudged toward the west before we could pull the pin. We suspect the 70 mph wind gust from the other night, or perhaps French leaned on the enclosure. On all but one of the cartridges tonight, the mapping of the center of the guide fibers was off by between 2 to 3 asec between the first guider flat and the second guider flat. See the problems section for details. A note on the DIMM and wind: When the wind gusts get over approx. 25 mph, you cannot really trust the DIMM FWHM results. It is pretty hard to centroid on streaks, after all. I'm afraid the tub cover may act a little like a sail as well, and shake the railing and mount a bit. 02:04Z Cartridge 3, plate 1601 Dust and high winds were a little below closure limits. We opened for spectroscopy even though it was photometric since Jurek expected bad seeing given the weather conditions. Shortly after opening, DIMM confirmed the seeing was indeed poor. Way to go Jurek! Jurek's SOP session complained about empty frames and launched a new SAOMon between his test image for the guider and his first guider flat. The related error messages are in the problems section. We went immediately to an FK5 star because of bright twilight. Dust counts started climbing again and reached just over 3000 particles/0.1ft^3 midway through our first exposure. Because the counts were climbing slowly and we did not expect a large dust event right away, we stayed open to finish the first exposure. During that time, the dust counts stabilized under 3000. Nonetheless, it would be good to have the mirrors CO2 cleaned. Plate 1601 was declared done with a total exposure time of 3900 s. 04:22Z Cartridge 1, plate 1456 Guide stars on gotoField after offsets were cleared. This plate declared done with a total exposure of 2520 s. 05:36Z Cartridge 5, plate 1613 Needed 10 asec East offset to get guide stars. Plate was declared done with a total exposure time of 2700 s. 06:51Z Cartridge 9, plate 1467 Needed an FK5 to find the guide stars. Declared this plate done with a total exposure of 2220 s. 08:05Z Cartridge 6, plate 1642 Needed an FK5. The offset was approx. 20 asec east (!) Finished this plate with a total exposure of 2640 s. 09:20Z Cartridge 7, plate 1382 Guide stars on gotoField, using offsets from previous plate. Declared plate done with a total exposure of 2100 s. 10:23Z Cartridge 2, plate 1386 Guide stars on gotoField, using old offsets. WSIGMA for r1 was out of spec. That killed our chances for seven plates. We adjusted the focus, then took one exposure and a calibration during early twilight. The (S/N)^2 for r1 was less than 2 for both exposures; the one taken before the focus adjust and the one after. No useful signal on this plate. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4582 23:01Z 23:22Z 100 O -97.21 -91.96 48 ignore doghouse ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 26149, plate -9999 ------- see Son of Spectro 22:47 26149 0.0 bias for S/N! ----- sequence 26150, plate 1601 ------- 23:03 26150 10.0 flat 23:05 26151 2.0 arc 23:10 26152 2.1 arc 23:12 26153 2.1 arc ----- sequence 26154, plate -9999 ------- 23:33 26154 0.0 bias 23:40 26155 0.0 bias ----- sequence 26156, plate 1601 ------- 02:50 26156 10.0 flat 02:52 26157 2.0 arc 03:10 26158 900.1 target 03:33 26159 1200.1 target 04:06 26160 1800.1 target 04:09 26161 10.0 flat 04:12 26162 2.0 arc ----- sequence 26163, plate 1456 ------- 04:32 26163 10.0 flat 04:34 26164 2.0 arc 04:54 26165 900.1 target 05:12 26166 900.1 target 05:27 26167 720.1 target ----- sequence 26168, plate 1613 ------- 05:42 26168 10.0 flat 05:45 26169 2.0 arc 06:04 26170 900.1 target 06:22 26171 900.1 target 06:40 26172 900.1 target ----- sequence 26173, plate 1467 ------- 07:07 26173 10.0 flat 07:09 26174 2.0 arc 07:28 26175 900.1 target 07:44 26176 720.1 target 07:57 26177 600.1 target ----- sequence 26178, plate 1642 ------- 08:21 26178 10.0 flat 08:23 26179 2.0 arc 08:43 26180 900.1 target 08:58 26181 720.1 target 09:18 26182 1020.1 target ----- sequence 26183, plate 1382 ------- 09:33 26183 10.0 flat 09:35 26184 2.0 arc 09:54 26185 900.1 target 10:06 26186 600.1 target 10:19 26187 600.1 target ----- sequence 26188, plate 1386 ------- 10:32 26188 10.0 flat 10:34 26189 2.0 arc 10:44 26190 2.1 arc 10:47 26191 2.1 arc 11:06 26192 600.1 target 11:19 26193 600.1 target 11:22 26194 10.0 flat 11:25 26195 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:00Z 3 1601 34.26 0.0045 65.12 0.0016 208.82 -0.0027 1.000270 04:48Z 1 1456 130.18 -0.0035 73.49 0.0001 -60.34 -0.0121 1.000390 05:59Z 5 1613 -22.70 0.0078 68.25 0.0020 160.50 -0.0067 1.000220 07:22Z 9 1467 186.27 -0.0109 78.27 0.0055 7.33 0.0017 1.000350 08:36Z 6 1642 249.89 0.0004 72.06 0.0053 82.08 -0.0010 1.000130 09:43Z 7 1382 251.68 0.0023 65.93 0.0028 88.41 -0.0124 0.999980 11:00Z 2 1386 258.23 0.0001 57.51 0.0025 99.97 0.0009 0.999980 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7443 Stays: JL7444 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:00Z 3 1601 1.00027 -2665 -796 270 34 65.1 8.2 22 264 - 1.8 04:48Z 1 1456 1.00039 -3850 -1932 130 130 73.5 7.7 16 274 - 1.5 05:59Z 5 1613 1.00022 -2171 -494 170 -23 68.3 7.0 22 272 - 1.7 07:21Z 9 1467 1.00035 -3455 -1601 140 186 78.3 6.0 18 288 - 1.7 08:36Z 6 1642 1.00013 -1283 245 180 250 72.1 5.4 18 274 - 1.8 09:43Z 7 1382 0.99998 198 1472 170 252 65.9 5.3 22 270 - 1.8 11:00Z 2 1386 0.99998 198 1552 230 258 57.5 3.9 20 289 - 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:40Z 56 8 18 257 (WSW) 1450 - clear 23:13Z 56 10 28 218 (SW) 1771 - " 23:45Z 53 2 19 249 (WSW) 2006 - " 00:58Z 49 3 17 263 (W) 1841 - " 01:32Z 47 5 19 252 (WSW) 1568 - " 02:05Z 46 2 17 260 (W) 1888 - " 02:38Z 47 0 22 259 (W) 2273 - " 03:09Z 46 -3 18 266 (W) 2907 - " 03:42Z 46 -1 21 269 (W) 3185 - " 04:13Z 46 0 20 269 (W) 2395 - " 04:43Z 46 3 16 264 (W) 2245 - " 05:13Z 45 4 20 274 (W) 2014 - " 05:44Z 45 4 20 273 (W) 2274 - " 06:14Z 44 7 28 286 (WNW) 2163 - " 06:47Z 44 8 31 270 (W) 2012 - " 07:18Z 42 6 17 271 (W) 2805 - " 07:48Z 42 5 26 277 (W) 2234 - " 08:21Z 42 5 26 270 (W) 2182 - " 08:53Z 41 1 21 302 (WNW) 2107 - " 09:25Z 41 2 22 289 (WNW) 1805 - " 09:56Z 40 5 27 287 (WNW) 2052 - " 10:26Z 39 5 17 277 (W) 2118 - " 10:58Z 39 5 14 294 (WNW) 2157 - " 11:30Z 38 5 20 291 (WNW) 2484 - " 12:03Z 37 5 18 296 (WNW) 2630 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:55Z Started enclosure ventilation 01:35Z Opened enclosure 11:39Z Closed enclosure Telescope stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 2 mounted.
