APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 20, 2004 (MJD 53146) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Dan Long Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Collimation, then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Collimation, C axis tilt only done (see the log). New pointing model was necessary to obtain (see problem section for details). Variable seeing and sky condition (from photometric to nonphotometic all the time) dictated spectroscopy. Plates done: 1610 (not observed, but status was changed after Jen checked data quality on this plate) 1698, 1398, 1420. Precalib on plate 1420 failed (see problem section) - problem solved, but lost 5 minutes. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation checked. No adjustment performed. NIGHT: ------ Collimation: 1). engcamera mounted. 2). We stared wtih homing the mirrors, all mig's went into spec after we've done that. Then we found fk5 star. All engcamera images has been copied into /data/spectro/guider/53146_collimation directory on host for future reference. 3). Good focus was found at f=270, seeing 4.2,4.3 pixels (1 pix 0.28") => 1.2" not bad! see guider frame: gimg0007.fits 4). Frames: gimg0008.fits is when focus was set: f+300, and gimg0011.fits f-300 On both sides of the focus star donuts were bottom heavy (according to Dan, they were pretty bad). 5). Assuming that we've got problem only with C axial, (while our of focus f-300), we shifted C from C=850 to: C=-150 and took encam 5 sec exposure (frame gimg0014.fits) but there wasn't improvement or difference to previous frames. So we shifted C down to C=-1150 (frame *15.fits) - the donut is maybe centered better but it's image looks worse (bottom right heavy).Aparently we went into wrong direction. Now we tried oppsite direction C=1850 (frame *16.fits) - much better. Just to compare images taken in similar conditions we took another engcam image with C=850 (*17.fits) - yes, the direction we are going is good, but exposure time has to be increased so the seeing variations will even out over a donut surface. Exposure has been set to 20 sec. C=850 frames *19.fits, *20.fits. C=1850 (at 20sec integration time) , frame *21.fits - confirms what we figured out from shorter exposures. C=2850 frames *22.fits, *23.fits looks even better. C=3000 (*24.fits) didn't make noticable difference. C=4000 (*25.fits) cannot tell if it's better, rather slightly deteriorated. C=5000 (*26.fits) it's worse (a donut is heavy in upper left part) We decided that C=3500 is the best C postion (see frame *27.fits and *28.fits but *28.fits seeing got worse than in previous two frames). 6). How does it look like on the other side of focus? f+300, frame *30.fits, seeing is definately worse, but we can tell that star image looks the same as on f-300. Star donut is left side heavy, but it's much better than it was, when we started the collimation. 7). Now we need to change mir.dat file on tcc: primaryMountOffset of axial C has to be changed by the difference 3500-850=2650 (according to Dan), so he did. To get new primaryMountOffsets read in we set block mir/in=tdat:mir.d and since star image drifted away during our collimation process, we set an old pointing model. It did improve the situation (frame *32.fits), but the star image is still too far from the engcamera center. Temperature has changed so focus drifted as well (now foucs=225 and seeing ~1"). It's photometric but we need a new pointing model. 8). We took a new short pointing model (grid_8_5_27_88_T_45.dat). S good one (error 1.5"!. CA (which is sensitive to coma?) coefficient is down to 10 instead 60 like in a previous model (see problem section for details). Everything looks good. =================== end of collimation and checking ======================== Science: -------- As soon as we finished with collimation, clouds arrived, so we switched to spectroscopy. 05:10Z Cart 9 plt 1698 mounted. Offets were clear and we've got stars on slew in near middles of the fibers. After first exposure seeing got worse. Postcalib done. Plate done. 07:23Z cart 2 plt 1398 mounted. Stars on slew (after clearing offsets). Warnings on this plate: sdR-r1-00026894.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 105.044 at 8921.53 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-r2-00026894.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 77.6862 at 8889.20 Ang (ignoring 5577) Nothing obvious found in apoplotsky. Plate done. 09:05Z Cart 7 plt 1420 mounted. Stars on slew. Precalib faild with an error: Error: Can't convert nan0x10000000 to type FLOAT... (see problem section).
