APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday June 24, 2004 (MJD 53181) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Steph Snedden Howard Brewington Support: Jon B on-site for many hours (until the wee hours) Connie Rockosi (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A warm spectro b1 CCD needed pumping (it appeared to have lost some vacuum). That took the first half of the night, and clouds took the rest. No science. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon =========== When I did initNight, I got the followig for all photo1 crates again in watcher. poolNRGangTrim (232: 2004-06-24 22:19:12Z) After clearing the error, they did not return. Around 22:10Z or so: JB was checking the sp1 in the quest to solve the last week's sp1 mystery behavior which lead to CCD warming During the 10min JB was talking to the instrument, apparently it also wanted to do a fill. At the end of JB's work, both dewars required filling and the ccd1 warmed up a bit. As of now, we wait for the CCD1 (b1) to cool down (current Temp is -50K). JB made sure the LN2 fill started at the telescope. 23:00Z The LN2 temp and ccd temp on ccd1 showed it was not cooling down. JB rebooted the mechnicals of sp1 followed by Dan iacking it. This brought the ccd and ln2 temperature to decrease immidiately. The previous startfillseq apparently were not carried out by sp1. Glitch? ln2 temp got as high as 157K and CCD -47C during this incident. Around 23:15Z: We started a sequence of 10 biases. The bias level which originally dropped did not continue to do so. After the sequence finished, we checked the temp and found that the temperature was goingup again for both ln2 and ccd. So we did "cc warmseq" followed by the startfillseq. This helped and the ln2 temp started to go down again. NOTE: The watcher plot shows as if the CCD1 temp holding steady while taking biases. We suspect that this is not true since the bias level rose and we do not think Watcher was able to get info from the spectros while it was taking bias one after another. Is it possible that watcher uses the old values until new data come in?? 00:00Z: The b1 temp seems to be "stuck" and will not get colder than -38C or so. JB suggests we wait for 20-30min. Patience. patience. 00:20Z: CCD1 is now -37C and the bias level indicates things are not getting colder. JB worries that we lost vacuum. around 00:30Z: We called Connie for help. She agrees with JB and suggests we get a flat and arc images before the CCD1 is too warm. We see no evidence of crud from the getter when we look at the flat. Connie also suggests that we now warm CCD1. 01:10Z: JB & Steph start the warming of CCD and disconnect the LN2 fill line to CCD1 in preparation for pumping. Night: ====== 02:19Z: Jon started pumping b1. Howard & Steph lent moral support. 03:45Z: We got another critical error on sp1, and r1 started to warm up, even though it had been hooked back up to the autofill system. Jon had tried to disable fills to b1 in software so it wouldn't send an error message during fills to r1. We don't know if this was at all related to r1 warming up or not. Jon tried to call Connie & left voice mail. 05:20Z: r1 started cooling back down after a stopfillseq, startfillseq. Fills to b1 were still disabled in hardware and software. 06:30Z Vacuum of 6.6 e-6, so we stop pumping and start cooling b1. We take many biases during cooling. 08:01Z b1 was back in spec with a CCD temp of -92C, LN2 temp=96K and bias levels in SoS of 10. However, we remained closed because of clouds. We also saw radar return from Cannon AFB that made us think we could be blindsided with showers from the east. 10:13Z - We gave it up and closed. endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4695 22:21Z 22:51Z 100 O -42.12 -34.53 65 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n):n, except for flat while CCD was warming UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27409, plate -9999 ------- 22:20 27409 0.0 bias 23:13 27410 0.0 bias 23:16 27411 0.0 bias 23:18 27412 0.0 bias 23:20 27413 0.0 bias 23:22 27414 0.0 bias 23:24 27415 0.0 bias 23:26 27416 0.0 bias 23:28 27417 0.0 bias 23:30 27418 0.0 bias 23:33 27419 0.0 bias 23:48 27420 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27421, plate 1112 ------- 23:53 27421 0.0 bias 00:15 27422 0.0 bias 00:27 27423 0.0 bias 01:01 27424 10.0 flat b1 CCD warming up.
