APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday October 17, 2004 (MJD 53296) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek John Barentine Visitors: Josh Frieman, John Marriner, Ben Dilday, Fritz DeJongh (SNe Team, FNAL and U. Chicago) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SN science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first part of the night was lost to wind, dust and clouds. We obtained a 3.67 hr run (370 frames) of supernovae data (82 N) from lambda -174 to -122.5 in photometric and moonless conditions. The seeing for approximately the last third of the run (from frame 249 on) is survey quality. We attempted to image Segue 1300 N from mu +94 to 119. However, the run was plagued by bad seeing and is probably not useful. Flat field petal 3 was acting up. See the log for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation adjusted. Night: ------ High wind, dust and clouds delayed opening until about 05:50Z. We lost the dimm vnc window in the control room and could not get it to come back up. Since the dimm was operational we decided to control it from the telescope rather than shutting it down and restarting it. The on-telescope bias is run 4898. Everything looked normal and no problems were noticed. Run 4899: Supernovae strip 82 N. Start lambda -178. Skippy good at frame 15, lambda -175.6. Focus good at frame 25, lambda -174.2. Begin science at frame 26, lambda -174. Skies are photometric and the moon set long ago. Seeing is is a little high (1.7 - 2"); otherwise data would be survey quality. Note that the nu error is slightly above 8" for all of this run. The seeing improved and became survey quality in the latter portion of the run. According to seeingRun, the seeing was acceptable for frames 199 to 209 (lambda -148.1 to -146.6) and again for frames 249 to 309 (lambda -140.6 to -131.6). The seeing was called good by seeingRun from frame 309 on (lambda -131.6 to -122.4). This run was approximately 3.67 hrs (370 frames) in length. Since skies were photometric and moonless and the seeing was good, we attemtped to image a Segue strip. Run 4900: Segue strip 1300 N. Start mu +94. Skippy and focus both good at frame 15, mu 95.5. seeingRun called the seeing bad until frame 49 (mu 100.6) even though the values didn't look too bad. The seeing went from bad to good at frame 49 (mu 100.6) and from good to acceptable at frame 59 (mu 102.1). The seeing went bad again at frame 69 (mu 103.6). It's too late to switch to spectroscopy now so we'll continue to image and hope some of it is useful. Unfortunately, the seeing remained bad for the remained of the run and this run is probably not useful. Flat field petal 3 was noticed to be in an indeterminate state during run 4900. The system status panel showed the open status bit to be bad and the mcp showed the screens were closed. Visual inspection showed all screens open except for 3 which was neither open or closed but vertical. We tried opening the screens from the mcp but this changed nothing. After we stopped the run, we closed the flat field screens and all was well. Not sure if this was a wind related problem or hardware but perhaps someone should have a look. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start
