APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 17, 2004 (MJD 53327) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden Pete Newman Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A good night for spectroscopy. 7 plates finished under a night of partly cloudy skies: plates 1869, 1928, 1925, 1551, 2044, 2038, 2046 Day crew stuff: 1) The TPM cards in the lower enclosure communications rack had to be reset. Do you want to investigate? 2) Could guide fiber 6 on cartridge 5 be cleaned at both ends, please? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was adjusted. Details in the Problems section. Windscreen touch during checkout: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-17 23:17:32Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-17 23:17:43Z) Nothing else to report. Night: ------ 00:30Z Opened to partly cloudy skies. Another windscreen touch on the test slew. The telescope was slightly bottom-heavy with its full 10-l dewars. The bottom flat-field screens have been in an indeterminate state for the last four days or so inside the enclosure. When we opened at twilight, only the top half petals opened. We reclosed the petals, reopened them and all was well. 00:50Z Cartridge 8, plate 2038 - SEGUE bright ---------------------------------------------- Large offset in altitude needed (no surprise). An FK5 was found in twilight. We noted a round spot in the b2 flat at r=177, c=730. Is this a known defect, Dan? We don't recall seeing it before. It is not a donut, so is not far from the focal plane, and could be a chip defect. Clouds & Moon kept the signal acquisition slow. Exposure no. 29436 did not reach (S/N)**2 of 2 in b1, but we suspect this is the SoS reduction, and it is likely O.K. to use. Brian, could you look at the exposure and decide if you want to use it? We declared the exposure bad, in any case. We did eventually finish this plate with a total exposure of 3600s (and possibly an additional 1200s from the bad exposure). 03:06Z Cartridge 6, plate 2044 - SEGUE bright --------------------------------------------- Guide stars on GTF. 04:16Z Pete reset both TPM cards in the communications rack in the lower enclosure. We had lost communication with many sensors (see problem section). The reset appeared to fix the problem. Finished this plate with a total exposure time of 3600s. 04:47Z Cartridge 5, plate 1551 - lowz ------------------------------------- This plate already had (S/N)**2 = 24.7 on r2. An FK5 was needed to find the field. Guide fiber 6 has a fiber or tree trunk blocking part of it. Could both fiber ends be cleaned please? This plate was finished with a total exposure time of 1200 s. 05:40Z Cartridge 9, plate 2046 - SEGUE bright ---------------------------------------------- Guide stars on goToField. There are some sky residual warnings, but we think this may be whopping fiber related, rather than aurora related. Finished this plate with a total of 3100 s. exposure. 07:06Z Cartridge 1, plate 1869 - lower-priority survey plate ------------------------------------------------------------ GSOGTF. Disabled guide fiber 1 to avoid guiding on a hot pixel. Finished this plate with a total exposure of 3100s. 08:25Z Cartridge 4, plate 1925 - Survey plate --------------------------------------------- Guide stars on the edge of fibers 10 & 11. One offset brought all guide stars in. We acquired a little extra S/N on this plate, since we had the time to spare. Finished the plate and then some with a total exposure of 4000s. 10:09Z Cartridge 3, plate 1928 - Survey plate --------------------------------------------- GSOGTF. Finished this plate with a total exposure of 3300s. The r values were marginal, but we declared this plate done on our discretion. We had to close to rising humidity, otherwise we would have done another exposure. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4968 22:45Z 23:25Z 100 O 107.90 117.78 78 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 29423, plate -9999 ------- 22:44 29423 0.0 bias 23:02 29424 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29424, plate 2038 ------- 23:23 29425 10.0 flat collimation 23:25 29426 2.0 arc collimation 23:30 29427 2.1 arc collimation 23:33 29428 2.1 arc collimation 23:43 29429 2.1 arc collimation 23:46 29430 2.1 arc collimation ----- sequence 29431, plate -9999 ------- 00:33 29431 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29432, plate 2038 ------- 01:09 29432 10.0 flat 01:11 29433 2.0 arc 01:31 29434 900.1 target 01:49 29435 900.1 target 02:15 29436 1200.1 target 02:18 29437 10.0 flat 02:21 29438 2.0 arc 02:39 29439 900.1 target 02:57 29440 900.1 target ----- sequence 29441, plate 2044 ------- 03:14 29441 10.0 flat 03:16 29442 2.0 arc 03:37 29443 900.1 target 03:54 29444 900.1 target 04:12 29445 900.1 target 04:30 29446 900.1 target 04:34 29447 10.0 flat 04:36 29448 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29449, plate 1551 ------- 05:01 29449 10.0 flat 05:03 29450 2.0 arc 05:28 29451 1200.1 target 05:31 29452 10.0 flat 05:33 29453 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29454, plate 2046 ------- 05:52 29454 10.0 flat 05:54 29455 2.0 arc 06:13 29456 900.1 target 06:35 29457 1100.1 target 06:56 29458 1100.1 target ----- sequence 29459, plate 1869 ------- 07:09 29459 10.0 flat 07:11 29460 2.0 arc 07:22 29461 900.1 target 07:42 29462 1100.1 target 08:03 29463 1100.1 target ----- sequence 29464, plate 1925 ------- 08:31 29464 10.0 flat 08:33 29465 2.0 arc 08:53 29466 900.1 target 09:12 29467 1000.1 target 09:35 29468 1200.1 target 09:53 29469 900.1 target 09:56 29470 10.0 flat 09:58 29471 2.0 arc ----- sequence 29472, plate 1928 ------- 10:13 29472 10.0 flat 10:16 29473 2.0 arc 10:34 29474 900.1 target 10:57 29475 1200.1 target 11:20 29476 1200.1 target 11:23 29477 10.0 flat 11:25 29478 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:07Z 8 2038 89.09 -0.0002 52.46 -0.0200 247.86 -0.0012 1.000390 01:33Z 8 2038 85.19 0.0000 57.90 -0.0207 247.39 0.0014 1.000340 02:10Z 8 2038 77.97 0.0000 65.68 -0.0212 244.96 0.0071 1.000290 03:20Z 6 2044 71.71 0.0026 67.87 -0.0213 240.62 0.0287 1.000280 05:08Z 5 1551 -13.13 -0.0021 56.58 -0.0238 168.88 -0.0192 0.999930 05:58Z 9 2046 -40.55 0.0011 76.94 -0.0215 143.64 0.0326 1.000210 07:15Z 1 1869 131.66 0.0000 44.98 -0.0211 -88.97 -0.0179 1.000400 08:37Z 4 1925 82.18 -0.0007 50.49 -0.0202 242.48 0.0042 1.000260 10:19Z 3 1928 70.62 -0.0004 69.79 -0.0207 240.45 0.0268 1.000270 10:58Z 3 1928 51.54 -0.0004 77.16 -0.0207 226.20 0.0268 1.000240 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8116 Stays: JL8117 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:07Z 8 2038 1.00039 -3850 -1755 260 89 52.4 2.5 9 4 -
