APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday January 10, 2005 (MJD 53381) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Problems with the sp1 DA crate during afternoon check-out. Two plates finished (1933, 2062) and good data on three more (1753, 1782, 2068) under variable and sometimes thick cloud. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Problems with spectrograph crate (sp1 monitor was blue-screened): sp1> goStare 2 -flavor arc -comment test sp1 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 sp2 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 Flushing charge for 15 sec mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS appending BEGIN Exposure is paused; 2s of data were taken appending END EXPOSURE TIME is: 2 sp1 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 sp2 cameraNag {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 sp1 camstat {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2100 sp2 camstat {} t-g-sdss-2.apo.nmsu.edu 2200 1105400691 1105400712 2005-01-10 23:45:25Z: scheduling gangs2Unix transfers There already is a teamster, PID 22952, owned by snedden 2005-01-10 23:45:26Z: finished with iccExec -riskyOn data -async sd1 readoutBegin 2005-01-10 23:45:32Z: beginData has failed: waited too long for the daqBusy Error sp1> ptvmeReset did not help, spectro crate was rebooted. Servers were lost and restarted. Test arc exposure were not read in. Sop session had to be restarted as well. Spectrographs were focused (ambient temp 5.5 C). The rest things went fine. Night: ------ During routine operations,Watcher reported a TPM error: tracking (Excessive Az Tracking Error:: 2005-01-11 08:26:41Z) But this seemed to be benign. Lots of patchy clouds so we start with spectroscopy from before the end of twilight. Guide stars found on gotoField unless noted. 00:57Z Plate 2062, cartridge 2. Done in 4 exposures, 3900s, when combined with data from MJD 53379. SEGUEfaint plate requiring (S/N)^2 >= 50 in all cameras. FK5 found in twilight ~7 arcsec from last night's offsets. postCalibs requested and obtained. 02:52Z Plate 2068, cartridge 3. Not done in 1 exposure, 1062s. SEGUEfaint plate requiring (S/N)^2 >= 50 in all cameras. Guide stars found with cleared offsets. Thick cloud stopped observations before set-up was completed. We got one exposure in a hole in the clouds before passing the design time for this plate. Note that exposure was paused under cloud for a total of 30 minutes from flush to read-out, so will have a high cosmic-ray count. 04:54Z Plate 1782, cartridge 9. Not done in 3 exposures, 3745s. SDSS plate. Again dodging clouds giving one partially-paused exposure with high cosmic-ray counts. At 07:00, we switched to a higher-priority plate, hoping that the last exposure on this plate would finish it, however it is still slightly short of the S/N target. 07:07Z Plate 1933, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures, 3000s, when combined with data from MJD 53379. We lost a few minutes during the change to this plate when Pete missed a stop button that was pressed. Seeing more variable than earlier. 08:25Z Plate 1753, cartridge 5. SDSS plate. Not done in 5 exposures, 8100s. Seeing further degraded. First 1200s exposure did not make minimum S/N limit. We wawiated through clouds several times, and subsequent exposures were hampered by variable clouds. We also took midCalibs and postCalibs as the exposures were spread over a long period. The last 1800s exposure also did not meet the minimum S/N criterion. We closed as morning twilight started. endNight succeeded. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5104 23:26Z 23:41Z 100 O 171.40 175.00 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Y QA Procedures Done (y/n): N UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30347, plate -9999 ------- 23:19 30347 0.0 bias 23:35 30348 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30349, plate 1621 ------- 23:39 30349 0.0 bias 23:43 30350 10.0 flat ----- sequence 30353, plate -9999 ------- 23:57 30353 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30355, plate 1621 ------- 00:02 30355 0.0 bias 00:05 30356 2.1 arc 00:08 30357 2.1 arc 00:18 30358 2.1 arc 00:21 30359 2.1 arc ----- sequence 30360, plate 2062 ------- DONE 01:21 30360 10.0 flat 20.3 17.2 26.9 15.9 MJD 53379 01:24 30361 2.0 arc 36.3 38.8 43.0 38.8 Tonight 01:43 30362 900.1 target ---- ---- ---- ---- 02:01 30363 900.1 target 56.6 56.0 72.9 54.7 02:19 30364 900.1 target 02:43 30365 1200.1 target 02:46 30366 10.0 flat 02:48 30367 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30368, plate 2068 ------- 3.5 3.2 3.6 3.6 Not done 03:24 30368 10.0 flat 03:27 30369 2.0 arc 03:52 30370 1061.9 target ----- sequence 30371, plate 1782 ------- 18.2 11.7 17.8 14.6 Not done 05:07 30371 10.0 flat 05:09 30372 2.0 arc 05:41 30373 1045.5 target 06:25 30374 1200.1 target 06:54 30375 1500.1 target 06:57 30376 10.0 flat 07:00 30377 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30378, plate 1933 ------- DONE 07:19 30378 10.0 flat 7.2 5.3 7.9 5.8 MJD 53380 07:21 30379 2.0 arc 14.2 11.3 16.5 12.6 Tonight 07:45 30380 1200.1 target ---- ---- ---- ---- 08:07 30381 1200.1 target 21.4 16.6 24.4 18.4 08:20 30382 600.1 target ----- sequence 30383, plate 1753 ------- 26.6 13.1 26.4 12.7 Not done 08:36 30383 10.0 flat 08:39 30384 2.0 arc 09:04 30385 1200.1 target BAD - ignore 09:32 30386 1500.1 target 10:00 30387 1500.1 target 10:33 30388 1800.1 target 11:01 30389 1500.1 target 11:34 30390 1800.1 target 11:37 30391 10.0 flat 11:40 30392 2.0 arc 12:55 30393 1800.1 target BAD - ignore 12:58 30394 10.0 flat 13:00 30395 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:17Z 2 2062 202.00 0.0132 83.59 0.0035 23.74 0.0727 1.000330 03:32Z 3 2068 -19.67 0.0003 55.65 0.0014 163.48 -0.0006 1.000180 05:05Z 9 1782 138.65 0.0005 52.28 0.0032 -73.21 -0.0114 1.000240 07:26Z 7 1933 69.19 -0.0031 73.24 0.0032 240.57 0.0090 1.000220 08:39Z 5 1753 69.38 -0.0002 52.63 0.0026 234.28 -0.0031 1.000320 ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8258 Stays: JL8259 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:17Z 2 2062 1.00033 -3258 -1257 325 202 83.6 5.1 16 259 BG38 1.4" 03:32Z 3 2068 1.00018 -1776 -157 150 -20 55.7 4.2 14 282 BG38 1.6" 05:13Z 9 1782 1.00021 -2073 -495 50 139 53.3 3.8 23 288 BG38 1.6" 07:26Z 7 1933 1.00022 -2171 -572 100 69 73.3 3.0 20 284 BG38 1.7" 08:47Z 5 1753 1.00032 -3159 -1398 50 67 54.2 2.8 20 281 BG38 2.2" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:18Z 45 11 10 268 (W) -9999 - Variable cloud 23:50Z 42 14 13 267 (W) -9999 - " 00:22Z 41 15 9 237 (WSW) -9999 - " 00:52Z 39 16 14 253 (WSW) -9999 - " 01:22Z 41 16 13 266 (W) -9999 - " 01:53Z 40 16 14 258 (WSW) -9999 - " 02:24Z 40 16 15 263 (W) -9999 - " 02:55Z 40 13 14 271 (W) -9999 - " 03:27Z 39 14 16 269 (W) -9999 - " 04:00Z 39 13 17 280 (W) -9999 - " 04:32Z 39 14 15 302 (WNW) -9999 - " 05:04Z 38 15 17 287 (WNW) -9999 - " 05:35Z 39 16 16 285 (WNW) -9999 - " 06:05Z 39 16 16 272 (W) -9999 - " 06:35Z 38 14 20 282 (WNW) -9999 - " 07:06Z 38 15 12 290 (WNW) -9999 - " 07:37Z 37 16 15 281 (W) -9999 - " 08:08Z 37 17 16 287 (WNW) -9999 - " 08:39Z 37 17 16 284 (WNW) -9999 - " 09:10Z 36 17 6 266 (W) -9999 - " 09:42Z 36 20 22 285 (WNW) -9999 - " 10:15Z 37 21 21 284 (WNW) -9999 - " 10:48Z 36 21 11 279 (W) -9999 - " 11:19Z 37 22 22 284 (WNW) -9999 - " 11:52Z 36 22 14 291 (WNW) -9999 - " 12:24Z 36 23 23 270 (W) -9999 - " 12:56Z 36 23 19 272 (W) -9999 - " 13:29Z 37 23 14 270 (W) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:10Z Fans on 00:30Z Telescope opened, spectro dewars refilled.
